A game that launches is not necessarily a game that works as intended. Before sharing an AI-generated game, check its core behaviors deliberately, reproduce and fix failures, measure performance when needed, get another person to play, and review generated content for suitability and rights.
Define what “working” means for your game
Turn the game’s main promises into observable checks. Write down what should happen when a player starts, moves, wins or loses, restarts, and reaches each important transition. Keep the checks specific: “pressing the jump button makes the character rise” is easier to verify than “movement feels right.”

For each check, note the input and expected result. Then try the same input sequence and confirm the expected state change. This is a repeatable smoke test, not proof that the entire game is correct; it catches obvious gaps between what the game appears to do and what its mechanics actually implement.

A 2026 preprint, SWE-Game: Can Coding Agents Build the Games We Want?, illustrates a more structured evaluation approach combining engine-state checks, replay of reference inputs, and demonstrations of features. Its results concern its particular benchmark, not every AI-generated game. Across six models, the authors report that the best overall scores remained below 60 out of 100 across three construction tasks; that is a benchmark result, not a score to expect from an individual project.

Run the game and reproduce failures
Start with the normal play path, then try edge cases tied to your mechanics: collide with an obstacle from different angles, reach a boundary, pause during an animation, restart after losing, or repeat an action quickly. When something goes wrong, record the exact steps, what you expected, what happened, and any error message. Reproducing one failure at a time makes it easier to identify its cause.
Godot 3.6 is one concrete example of engine support for this work. Its debugging tools overview documents the debugger and profilers, breakpoints, remote debugging, runtime collision and navigation visualization, and options for syncing changed scripts or scenes during a run. These facilities can help you inspect runtime behavior and spatial problems. The page is for Godot 3.6; consult documentation matching the version you actually use because features and labels can differ.

Fix the cause, then check for regressions
Once you can reproduce a defect, change one small thing at a time where practical. Rerun the scenario that exposed it, then repeat your other core checks to make sure the fix has not broken a different mechanic. There is no universal required test count or mandatory framework for a small game; prioritize repeatability and the behaviors players rely on.
For randomized or fragile gameplay, arrange a repeatable setup or record the inputs so you can compare runs meaningfully. The 2023 workshop paper PlayTest: A Gamified Test Generator for Games describes repeated game testing as tedious and error-prone and proposes deriving test cases from player actions. It is research motivation and a proposal, not evidence of a validated consumer testing tool.

Profile before making performance changes
If the game stutters, loads slowly, or struggles on its target device, measure before rewriting code. Godot’s contributor optimization guidelines recommend recording a baseline profile and comparing it with a follow-up using the same build settings. They also advise testing real games, repeating measurements because results fluctuate, and trying multiple platforms where appropriate. Debug and optimized builds can behave differently, so a timing comparison is meaningful only when the setup is comparable.
Focus on the target experience: test the exported build on the kind of device and platform you expect people to use, not only inside the editor. Treat a small timing change as a measurement to verify, not proof of a user-visible improvement.

Ask another person to play without coaching
Give someone a build and a simple goal, but do not explain every interaction. Watch where they hesitate, what they think will happen, and whether they can finish or restart. Ask them to describe confusing moments after play rather than steering them through the game while they play.

Automated checks and human playtests answer different questions. A repeatable check can confirm that a particular input leads to a particular state; another person can reveal unclear controls, confusing feedback, or a difficulty curve you did not notice. Use both when possible. The sources do not establish a required number of testers for a small project.

Review generated code and assets before sharing
Keep track of what was generated and what you changed. Review the art, audio, text, code, and dependencies for audience suitability and distribution concerns; do not assume plausible output is safe to ship. In particular, generated scripts that run inside an editor deserve care: Godot’s documentation warns that @tool scripts execute in the editor and can make permanent changes without undo/redo, and recommends caution and version control. See Running code in the editor for Godot’s guidance.
For Unity users, Unity’s Unity AI Guiding Principles say users are responsible for ensuring generated content is appropriate and does not infringe third-party rights. Unity also describes metadata on AI-generated assets that can help users locate and audit them within a project. Those statements concern Unity’s ecosystem, not every AI tool or jurisdiction; check the current terms and rules that apply to your project before distribution.
