A retrieval-augmented chatbot can receive hostile instructions through retrieved documents, while an agent connected to tools may turn a manipulated response into an unauthorized action. Promptfoo is the clearest fit in this comparison for application-level red teaming and repeatable evaluation; garak is positioned as a vulnerability scanner for an LLM or system. Giskard, PyRIT, and sentinel-scan-cli have different evidence-backed scopes, so verify their current injection coverage and fit before adopting them.
Why a model-only test can miss prompt injection
The relevant target depends on what you want to secure. A base-model test can reveal behavior in response to adversarial prompts, but it will not necessarily exercise the system prompt, retrieval pipeline, permissions, or tools in your deployed application. Indirect prompt injection is especially dependent on that surrounding flow: an instruction may arrive inside retrieved content rather than in the user’s message, and a tool-using agent may have access to actions that the model itself does not.

Decide whether the assessment covers a model endpoint, the full application, or both. If the goal is to understand application risk, configure the test to reach the real retrieval and tool paths under the permissions the app actually uses. A scanner run against a narrower target can still be useful, but its result says nothing definitive about paths it did not exercise.

#1 Best Overall
| Tool | Evidence-backed role | What to verify for your use case |
|---|---|---|
| Promptfoo | Application red teaming and evaluation, with CLI workflows for generating tests, running them, and producing reports. Its guidance covers adversarial input generation, response evaluation, and vulnerability analysis. | Confirm that your provider or app wiring reaches the intended system prompt, RAG context, tools, and report format. |
| garak | An open-source vulnerability scanner for an LLM or system. Microsoft’s PyRIT documentation describes Garak prompt-injection scenarios that place override instructions inside otherwise benign tasks. | Check whether the configured target includes the application-layer behavior you need to assess, rather than only the model or a narrower system interface. |
| Giskard | The giskard-oss repository identifies it as an open-source evaluation and testing library for LLM agents. | Verify current scan APIs, prompt-injection coverage, setup requirements, and the terms for any hosted monitoring you plan to use. |
| PyRIT | OWASP includes it in its list of GenAI security testing tools; Microsoft’s documentation includes Garak scenarios involving prompt injection. | Check current repository maintenance and release status before treating it as a current default. The cited documentation does not establish a release cadence. |
| sentinel-scan-cli | Its README describes endpoint injection and jailbreak probes, plus separate MCP manifest checks. | The project claims a 15-attack suite. Treat that as the maintainer’s description of scope, not an independently measured effectiveness result, and decide whether that breadth covers your threat model. |
For any choice, compare the target layer, scenario breadth, ability to exercise the real application and its RAG or tool flow, setup burden, reporting, and repeatability in development or CI/CD. A long attack list alone does not show that a tool reaches the risky parts of your app.
Which tool should you start with?
Choose application-level testing when the deployed app is the concern
Start with an application-level evaluation when users interact with a chatbot, RAG pipeline, or tool-using agent and you need to test those connected components together. Promptfoo documents an adversarial-input-to-evaluation workflow and supports one-off reports as well as CI/CD use. Its documentation also distinguishes application-layer risks—such as indirect injections, context leaks, and tool-based issues—from model-layer risks. Those capabilities make it the strongest documented starting point here for a team seeking a repeatable test of its actual app, provided the configuration reaches that app.

Add model-level scanning when assessing a model
Use a model or system vulnerability scanner such as garak when the assessment is specifically about an LLM target and its vulnerability probes. Microsoft’s PyRIT documentation illustrates prompt-injection scenarios in which an override command is embedded in a benign task. That scenario can inform test design, but it does not by itself establish that your deployed application, retrieval layer, and tools were tested.

Verify coverage before relying on the other options
Giskard is documented as an LLM-agent evaluation and testing library, but the available project description does not establish its current prompt-injection detectors. For PyRIT, OWASP’s listing and Microsoft’s Garak-scenario documentation establish relevance to security testing, not current maintenance cadence. Sentinel Scan CLI describes specific endpoint and MCP checks, but the attack count and scope are project claims. For each, confirm current documentation, setup, and coverage against the exact target you intend to test.

A repeatable prompt-injection test workflow
- Set the test boundary. Choose a model endpoint, the full application, or both. For an app assessment, include the actual system prompt, retrieval path, permissions, and connected tools that are in scope.
- Define attacker goals and protected outcomes. Examples include overriding the intended task, exposing restricted context, or invoking a tool outside policy. Run the work in an authorized test environment.
- Generate varied adversarial inputs and run them against the target. Promptfoo describes a workflow that generates malicious intents, evaluates responses, and analyzes findings with deterministic or model-graded metrics. Include indirect-injection cases if untrusted retrieved content is part of the app.
- Inspect each failure in context. Record the tested configuration and case, then determine whether the failure exposed data, bypassed a policy, or triggered an action. A passing run is evidence about the cases and configuration exercised, not an exhaustive security guarantee. LLM outputs can vary between runs.
- Turn confirmed failures into regression tests. Remediate the application control responsible for the behavior, then rerun the cases as part of development or CI/CD. Keep the test target and configuration aligned with the deployed flow.
How to interpret the results
Separate a test result from a security conclusion. A scanner finding is a lead to investigate; a passing scan is not proof that every attack path is safe. Note which target was exercised, which flows and permissions were available, and which cases produced the result. If the app has retrieval or tools that the run did not reach, say so in the assessment rather than treating the run as a complete application test.
The practical approach is to use application-level tests for the system people use and add model-level scans when selecting or assessing a base model. The distinction follows from the tools’ documented scopes: connected application risks can emerge from prompts, retrieved context, and tools that a model-only assessment does not exercise.

What the documentation establishes—and what it does not
The software descriptions and workflows summarized here reflect project and organization documentation checked on October 7, 2026. Product capabilities and maintenance can change, so verify the current official documentation before choosing a tool or relying on a particular workflow. The cited materials do not provide an independent comparative effectiveness benchmark for these five tools. In particular, the sentinel-scan-cli attack count is a maintainer claim, not a measured success rate, and the sources summarized here do not establish Giskard’s current injection-detector coverage or PyRIT’s current release cadence.
