On a Mac, Xcode’s iOS Simulator lets you build and run an app against multiple simulated iPhone models and iOS versions without owning a separate phone for each configuration. Add the simulator runtimes you need, select each configuration as the run destination, and repeat the checks that matter. Simulator is useful for broad compatibility testing, but it does not replace physical-device checks for hardware-dependent behavior or release builds.
What you need
- A Mac that can run your installed version of Xcode. Check current Xcode and macOS requirements before choosing hardware; the supported versions can vary by Xcode release.
- Your app project opened in Xcode, with its app build scheme selected.
- The iOS Simulator runtime for each OS version you want to test. A runtime is an OS package; a desired version may need to be downloaded before a simulator using it can be created.
Apple’s guidance is to build and run an app on a simulated or physical device. See Running your app on simulated or physical devices.

Run the app on different simulated iOS versions
- Open the project and choose its scheme. In Xcode, open your app project or workspace and select the app’s build scheme.
- Run on an installed simulator. Choose an iOS Simulator destination from the run-destination menu, then click Run. Xcode builds the app and launches it in that simulator.
- Add another model and OS combination. Open Device Hub and add a simulator configured for the device model and iOS version you want. If that version is missing, go to Xcode > Settings > Components and download an available iOS runtime. The available runtimes depend on your Xcode release. Apple documents simulator destinations and configurations in Adding additional simulators.
- Select the new destination and run again. Choose the new simulator in Xcode’s run-destination menu, then build and launch the app. Repeat for each OS/device pairing that is relevant to your app.
- Exercise the app, not just the launch. Recheck important flows on each configuration: screens, navigation, data handling, permissions, and any behavior that could vary by OS version or screen layout.
One simulator run does not establish that every supported configuration works. Apple notes that an issue may occur only on a particular device, OS version, or combination, so prioritize the combinations that reflect your app’s supported range and users.

Vary settings and inspect layouts in Simulator
Simulator can help you check conditions that affect the interface or app behavior without switching physical phones. Use its controls and settings to vary appearance, accessibility, location, audio, orientation, and text size. You can also resize the simulated iPhone screen to inspect how the layout adapts. These checks are useful, but they do not prove behavior on every physical display or under every real-world condition. See Apple’s Simulator documentation.

What Simulator cannot replace
Simulator does not reproduce physical-device performance, and some hardware-specific features may be unavailable. Use a real iPhone for tests that depend on those features and to verify behavior on actual hardware.
Also test release builds on a physical device. Apple says that although a release build can run in Simulator, Simulator is a separate device that users do not use. Treat simulator runs as valuable development and compatibility checks, not as the final proof that a release behaves like it will on a phone. See Testing a release build.

- 【Comprehensive Cable & Charger Tester】 Easily test Apple Lightning cables, USB-C data cables, and power adapters. It's compatible with iPhones, iPads, and other Lightning devices, and identifies original versus third-party accessories to ensure safe charging performance. (Note: The device can only read USB-C cables with a built-in E-Marker chip. It won't be able to read information from cables that don't have one.)
- 【Lightning Connector Authentication】 Reads Apple Lightning connector serial numbers and chips (Original, Certified, Taiwan, or Inferior). Detects essential protection features including ESD (electrostatic protection), OVP (over-voltage protection), and OCP (over-current protection). Perfect for verifying cable authenticity and quality.
- 【Data Cable Read & E-Marker Detection】 It detects whether a cable has an E-Marker chip and displays the information. If a cable lacks an E-Marker chip, the device won't respond or show any information.
- 【Charger & Adapter Analysis】 Tests USB-C/Lightning power adapters, supporting PD (Power Delivery) and QC2.0/3.0 fast charging protocols. Measures open voltage, rise/fall time, and maximum output wattage. Detects if the charger is original, certified, or copycat, helping users avoid unsafe adapters.
- 【Advanced Charging Simulation】 Features PD Decoy and QC Decoy functions, allowing manual switching of output voltages for in-depth charger testing. Provides real-time voltage/current graphs under load, ensuring reliable performance for phones, tablets, and other electronics.
A practical coverage plan without a phone collection
- Use Simulator broadly: create the relevant iOS-version and device-model configurations in Xcode, then run the app and repeat key checks across them.
- Use physical testing selectively: verify hardware-dependent features, investigate issues that appear tied to a particular device or OS combination, and check release builds on actual hardware.
- Choose coverage based on risk: test meaningful combinations across the versions and device configurations your app supports instead of assuming one simulator covers them all.
This approach avoids needing one physical phone per simulated configuration while preserving a place for real-device validation. If you do not have a Mac that can run Xcode, the workflow described here is not available locally; check Apple’s current Xcode and macOS requirements before deciding what computer to use.
