Test real homebuyer tasks—not just whether the page looks neat—including finding project details, opening approval documents, using filters, and submitting an enquiry. The criterion is about CSS pixels, not the physical pixel count of a phone.
What the 320-pixel check means
WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.4.10 is a reflow requirement for vertically scrolling content: at a narrow viewport, users should not have to scroll in two dimensions to access ordinary content and functionality. Content whose layout is essential to its meaning or use may be inherently two-dimensional and is excepted. The Government of India’s GIGW guidance adopts this criterion and includes a 320-pixel check. See the GIGW guidelines and conformity matrix.

GIGW guidance is written for Indian government websites and apps. It is a useful India-specific reference for a private property portal, but that does not establish that every private portal is legally bound by GIGW. This is a practical accessibility and responsive-QA guide, not legal advice.
Why test real-estate pages and tasks
For homebuyers, a narrow layout must preserve access to the information and actions that matter, not merely the site’s branding. The Indian Institute for Human Settlements describes RERA portals as resources for checking project status and approvals. Its 2023 review covered portals in 20 states and union territories and found variation in information and standardisation that limited complete transparency. That finding describes variation in the reviewed portals; it is not a national failure rate or evidence that every site fails mobile reflow. Read the IIHS publication.

Start with the homepage, property or project listing, an individual project detail page, and the enquiry or contact flow. Include the journeys a prospective buyer might actually take: finding a project, reviewing status or approval information, opening a document, and contacting the provider.
Run a 320 CSS-pixel test
- Choose pages and tasks. List the representative pages and actions before testing. Include long project details and document links, not just the homepage.
- Set the layout viewport to 320 CSS pixels. In your browser’s responsive or device viewport controls, enter a width of 320 CSS pixels. Record the reported viewport width. Do not use the device’s physical pixel count as a substitute.
- Inspect from top to bottom. Look for horizontal page scrolling, clipped text or controls, overlaps, content obscured by sticky headers or footers, and actions that cannot be reached. Check whether information and functionality remain available without two-dimensional scrolling, while recognizing the exception for content that inherently requires a two-dimensional layout.
- Exercise the interactions. Open navigation, operate filters, visit project details, follow document links, expand accordions, and complete the enquiry fields. A page can appear to reflow while a menu, button, or form still fails in practice.
- Repeat in relevant environments and languages. GIGW recommends checks across browsers and versions, operating systems, connection speeds, and screen resolutions. It also calls attention to Hindi and regional-language fonts and layout loss. Test the languages the site actually offers, using Unicode text.
- Combine manual and tool-assisted review. GIGW calls for manual testing of the 320-pixel criterion as well as an accessibility tool; its responsive-design checkpoint also points to browser extensions and tools. Use tools to help identify problems, then manually verify content and interactions.
- Write reproducible defect reports. For each issue, record the page, viewport width, browser and OS, language, steps to reproduce, expected result, actual result, and a screenshot. This is a practical QA record, not a prescribed GIGW template.
What to look for on property pages
- Navigation and discovery: Can a visitor reach project listings and use filters without controls being clipped or hidden?
- Project information: Can the visitor read the available status and approval details without content being cut off or covered?
- Documents: Are document links visible, operable, and distinguishable from nearby text?
- Enquiries: Can the visitor reach and complete each field and submit the form at the narrow width?
- Long and translated text: Do headings, labels, and Hindi or regional-language text wrap without overlap or lost content?
These checks apply the reflow criterion to common property-site tasks; they are not findings about any particular Indian real-estate website.

Manual review and tools: use both
Manual testing shows whether a person can complete the intended journey and whether content remains understandable. Automated or browser-based accessibility tools can help surface issues, but they do not replace opening menus, operating controls, reading project details, and completing forms. For useful coverage, vary the viewport and the browser, operating system, language, and connection conditions; for useful follow-up, preserve the reproduction details with each finding.

Current property-information context
On 25 September 2026, the Press Information Bureau reported TRAI’s launch of a Digital Connectivity Rating platform. The announcement describes a public interface for searching rated properties, viewing and comparing published ratings, and verifying certificates. This is separate from the 320 CSS-pixel reflow criterion; it does not change how the website check is performed. See the Press Information Bureau announcement.

Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot at the target width as a QA record, ScreenshotNeo accepts a viewport width and returns a screenshot. For example, this cURL request captures a page at 320 pixels wide:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com --data-urlencode width=320 -o shot.webpSee the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the supported parameters. A screenshot can help document layout, but it cannot establish that a user can operate every interaction; perform the task checks above as well.
