To test an Ethernet cable, first reseat both ends and try a known-good replacement. Then check the negotiated link rate, use an RJ45 wiremap tester to find basic wiring faults, or run iPerf3 between two devices to measure local throughput. These tests answer different questions: an internet speed test measures the whole internet path, while iPerf3 measures the complete local path—including both devices, ports, any switch, and the cable.
Choose the test that matches the problem
| Test | What it tells you | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Reseat connections and swap in a known-good cable | Whether a loose connection or a particular patch cable may be involved | The exact fault location or certified cable performance |
| Check the negotiated link rate | The rate the Ethernet link negotiated between devices | Sustained application throughput or which component caused a lower rate |
| Basic wiremap or continuity tester | Whether conductors connect and map in the expected order | End-to-end throughput or full signal-performance certification |
| iPerf3 between two devices | Local throughput across the chosen network path | Cable-only throughput or the bottleneck without controlled comparisons |
| Switch diagnostics or TDR | Depending on the hardware, electrical faults and possible fault location | A result that applies universally across vendors and models |
Start with the physical connection
- Check that both plugs are fully seated. Confirm one end is connected to the computer and the other to an Ethernet or LAN port on the router or switch. Microsoft’s Windows Ethernet troubleshooting guidance recommends checking both ends, using the correct router port, and trying another cable.
- Inspect visible cable sections and plugs for crushing, sharp kinks, damaged clips, or loose terminations. A link light or connection status does not prove that the cable can sustain the throughput you expect.
- Replace the cable with one you know works, keeping the devices and ports the same if possible. If the problem disappears, the original cable is suspect; reseating or changing a connection can also change the result, so a single swap is not conclusive.
Check the Ethernet link rate
Look up the reported Ethernet link speed in your computer’s network settings or adapter status, or in the switch’s port interface. The exact menu path and detail available depend on the operating system, adapter, and hardware. Compare the negotiated rate with the capabilities of both endpoint adapters and the intervening router or switch port.

A lower-than-expected link rate narrows the possibilities to the physical link or a device, port, or configuration limitation. It does not by itself prove that the cable is defective, measure sustained data transfer, or certify the cable. Record the operating system and hardware along with the rate so you can interpret the result in context.

Use a cable tester to check the wiring
For a detachable patch cable, connect an RJ45 tester’s main unit to one end and its remote unit to the other. A basic wiremap or continuity test can reveal an open conductor, a short, or conductors mapped in the wrong order. It checks wiring—not data throughput or category-level performance. Even a passing wiremap result does not rule out every signal-integrity or performance problem. See the tester’s instructions for the specific faults it detects.

For a permanent in-wall run, check the switch documentation before using a built-in cable test. Supported tests, the pairs examined, mode requirements, and link-state limitations vary by model. Report the switch model and what its diagnostic result means rather than treating all built-in tests as equivalent. TP-Link’s Omada cable-test documentation describes model- and mode-dependent behavior.
Measure local throughput with iPerf3
To measure data transfer across your local network, use two devices that can run iPerf3: one as a server and the other as a client. Connect them through the path you want to examine, and make sure their adapters and other hardware can support your target rate. TP-Link’s LAN-to-LAN iPerf guide describes an example setup and notes that incompatible iPerf versions can prevent a test from succeeding. Follow the instructions for your iPerf3 build to start the server and run a client test.

The result is throughput between those specific endpoints over the chosen path. It includes the endpoint devices and adapters, ports, any switch or router in the path, and the cable; a low result alone cannot identify the cable as the bottleneck. Cisco Meraki also describes iPerf for throughput and link-quality troubleshooting. When comparing tests, record the transport, test duration, endpoint hardware, and topology, because configuration affects what the result represents.

Compare components one at a time
- Run a baseline test with the current cable, endpoints, and ports, and record the setup and result.
- Replace only the cable with a known-good one, keeping the other components and settings fixed, then repeat the test.
- If needed, restore the original cable and change only the port. Keep other test conditions consistent.
If the performance change follows the cable across repeated tests, the cable becomes a stronger suspect. If it follows a port or endpoint instead, investigate that component. One run is not enough to identify a cause with certainty.

Escalate for installed or intermittent cable runs
If a run is difficult to reach or the basic checks do not explain the fault, consult the switch’s supported diagnostic procedure. Some equipment provides cable diagnostics; more detailed tools may help locate a fault. Juniper documents TDR cable diagnostics for supported platforms, including an estimate of the distance to a break or cut from the tested port. Availability and procedure are platform-specific. Do not assume that a consumer router has TDR or that another vendor’s diagnostic returns equivalent results.
