Test an AI model for Indian-language use with a language-by-task matrix, native and culturally grounded prompts, task-specific metrics, matched bias scenarios, and human validation. Report every result by language, script, task, and subgroup; one pooled “Indian language” score can hide serious failures.
Start with the deployment, not a benchmark
A benchmark score is meaningful only when it matches the system you intend to ship. Write a short deployment specification before selecting test data. Record:

- Users and locations: who will ask questions, make decisions, or receive generated content, and which regions they represent.
- Languages, scripts, and varieties: for example, Hindi in Devanagari, Romanized Hindi, Marathi in Devanagari, Tamil in Tamil script, or mixed Hindi-English (“Hinglish”). Include dialect, formality, spelling variation, and transliteration when those occur in production.
- Task: classification, search, summarization, translation, extraction, dialogue, content generation, speech recognition, speech synthesis, or a decision-support workflow.
- Channel: typed text, voice transcription, audio response, or a combination. Voice tests need their own recordings, accents, noise conditions, and transcription checks.
- Domain and stakes: entertainment and customer support have different tolerances from health, finance, education, identity verification, or public-service decisions.
- Failure consequences: define what counts as a harmless inconvenience, a blocked user, a privacy incident, a discriminatory recommendation, or a safety-critical error.
A translation test cannot establish cultural reasoning quality, and a multiple-choice result cannot establish whether open-ended assistance is useful. OpenAI’s IndQA was designed for culturally grounded reasoning because many established evaluations concentrate on translation or multiple choice.

Build a language-by-task test matrix
Create one row for each combination that matters in the product rather than treating “Indian languages” as a single category. A practical matrix can contain these columns:
#1 Best Overall
- [Ultra-Lightweight Ear Buds Designed for Small Ears] Each earbud weighs only 3.7g and features a compact, ergonomic in-ear design made especially for small ears. Secure, low-profile, and comfortable for workouts, all-day wear or overnight sleeping.The ultra-slim profile sits flush in your ear with no hard edges poking or rubbing, so you can even sleep on your side without discomfort.
- [Immersive Stereo Sound with TOZO OrigX Technology] TOZO OrigX tuning delivers clear vocals, balanced mids, and natural stereo sound for music, podcasts, and videos.
- [Long Battery Life for Daily Use] Get up to 7 hours of playtime on a single charge, with up to 32 hours total using the charging case—ideal for workdays, commuting, and extended listening sessions.
- [Bluetooth 5.3 & Stable Connection] Bluetooth 5.3 provides fast pairing, stable wireless performance, and reduced dropouts as you move around home or office.
- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
| Dimension | What to specify | Example test slice |
|---|---|---|
| Language | Named language and locale | Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam |
| Script | Native script and transliteration | Gujarati script and Romanized Gujarati |
| Register | Formal, colloquial, honorific, youth or professional usage | Formal customer complaint versus chat slang |
| Code mixing | Languages mixed in realistic proportions | Hinglish with English product names |
| Task | Input, expected output, and success criterion | Extract dates from a service request |
| Domain | Topic vocabulary and risk level | Public benefits, medicine, banking |
| Channel | Text, speech-to-text, or speech output | Noisy voice query from a regional accent |
Use native-language prompts written by fluent speakers for at least a substantial part of the set. Translating an English item can introduce unnatural syntax, erase culturally specific references, or make the answer easier than it would be for a real user. IndQA’s 2,278 questions were written natively in 12 languages; Hinglish is included because code-switching is common in conversation.
Choose complementary benchmarks
No single public dataset measures all of understanding, generation, cultural knowledge, and fairness. Combine benchmarks with your own held-out examples and production-like cases.
| Resource | Best use | Published scope and limits |
|---|---|---|
| IndQA | Cultural knowledge and reasoning in Indian-language contexts | 2,278 questions across 12 languages and 10 cultural domains, created with 261 domain experts. Each item has a native-language prompt, an English translation for auditability, an ideal answer, and weighted rubric criteria scored by a model grader. It is not a general measure of every language capability. |
| MILU | Multi-task understanding and India-specific knowledge | The AI4Bharat repository describes 11 Indic languages, eight domains, and 41 subjects. Its paper summary reports variation by language resource level and weaker results in culturally specific domains than in general STEM. A benchmark result is not a deployment guarantee. |
| IndicGenBench | User-facing generation, including summarization, translation, and question answering | The 2024 ACL resource covers 29 Indic languages, 13 scripts, and four language families with human-curated evaluation data. Its breadth helps coverage, but each generation task needs appropriate metrics and human review. |
| Indic-QA | Context-grounded extractive and abstractive question answering | The 2025 NAACL benchmark covers 11 major Indian languages. Its paper reports that translating input to English, processing it, and translating back outperformed multilingual models particularly in low-resource settings in that study; this is a reported finding, not a universal deployment recommendation. |
| Indic-Bias | Bias and stereotype probes | A working-paper summary from the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India describes 85 Indian identity groups and plausibility, judgment, and generation tasks across 14 evaluated large language models. Verify the primary benchmark documentation before deployment because the summary is not the underlying benchmark paper. |
| PARIKSHA | Reliability of multilingual evaluation and agreement between human and model judges | The EMNLP 2024 study examined 30 models in 10 Indic languages using 90,000 human and 30,000 LLM-based evaluations. It found that agreement fell in direct assessment, especially for Bengali and Odia, and reported evidence of self-bias in a GPT-based evaluator. |
When comparing two evaluation routes, check language and script coverage, task fit, native-authored versus translated prompts, cultural and domain relevance, scoring transparency, human validation, identity-group coverage, contamination risk, license and operational access, and whether results can be separated by language.

Exact-answer tasks
Use exact match or accuracy when there is a well-defined target, such as a label, extracted field, class, or span. Also report a confusion matrix and per-class recall when a minority class matters. Normalize only what is justified: silently stripping diacritics, punctuation, or script differences can turn a real user-visible error into a pass.

Open-ended generation
Score each response against a task rubric rather than relying on one similarity number. Useful dimensions include correctness, completeness, relevance, fluency, instruction following, safety, and groundedness in the supplied context. Define pass thresholds before looking at model results. A fluent answer with a wrong cultural fact should fail correctness even if a language-quality grader rates it highly.
Aggregating results
Publish language-level results first. If you provide an overall number, disclose the weighting: equal weight per language, traffic-weighted, or another scheme. Include confidence intervals or uncertainty estimates for sampled metrics, and show sample sizes. A large Hindi test set can otherwise drown out a small but important Assamese or Odia slice.
IndQA uses weighted, expert-authored rubric criteria scored by a model grader. That design is useful for nuanced answers, but its score is still a measurement of the selected items and rubric, not a universal language-ability index.

- Freeze the test plan. Version the matrix, datasets, prompt templates, expected outputs, rubrics, and pass thresholds. Mark which examples are public benchmark items, internal items, and held-out items.
- Prepare native review. Have fluent speakers check meaning, register, spelling, cultural references, and whether an answer key is actually acceptable in that language. For high-stakes domains, include subject-matter experts.
- Run controlled inference. Record model name and version, date, system and user prompts, context documents, decoding settings, maximum output length, tool calls, safety settings, and hardware or API configuration. Keep these fixed for the comparison.
- Score automatically where appropriate. Calculate exact-match, accuracy, extraction F1, or other task metrics only for tasks with stable targets. Store the raw output and the normalized form used for scoring.
- Score generated answers with a rubric. Have an evaluator assign separate ratings for correctness, completeness, relevance, fluency, instruction following, and groundedness. Do not collapse dimensions until you have inspected their distributions.
- Validate the evaluator. Give a stratified sample to independent human reviewers. Compare agreement by language, task, and rating dimension; adjudicate difficult cases and revise ambiguous rubric wording.
- Break out slices. Produce tables by language, script, register, code-mixing condition, domain, task, and relevant demographic or identity group. Preserve the denominator for every slice.
- Inspect failures. Cluster errors such as mistranslation, hallucinated facts, refusal in a permitted case, unsafe completion, script confusion, honorific mismatch, and culturally inappropriate assumptions. Save representative examples with sensitive data redacted.
- Re-run after changes. Any prompt, retrieval source, tokenizer, model version, safety policy, or decoding change requires the same regression set plus newly added failure cases.
Test bias as behavior, not only sentiment
Sentiment scores can miss discrimination in recommendations or access decisions. Use matched scenarios in which the relevant identity or social context changes while the job, evidence, and requested action stay constant. Compare whether the model changes:

- descriptions of competence, trustworthiness, criminality, or social status;
- the level of detail, politeness, refusal, or safety warning;
- translation choices, honorifics, gender marking, or assumed occupation and family role.
Randomize scenario order and use multiple templates so the model cannot pass by memorizing one pattern. Test identity terms in the scripts and forms users actually employ, including transliterations and code-mixed wording. A difference is not automatically proof of discrimination—some contexts legitimately depend on a fact—but every difference needs a documented rationale and human review.
Indic-Bias is a useful starting point because its working-paper summary covers 85 Indian identity groups and plausibility, judgment, and generation tasks. That list is not evidence that every relevant caste, tribe, religion, gender identity, disability, region, occupation, or intersectional harm is covered. Extend it to the populations and decisions in your deployment.
Use human reviewers and treat AI judges as instruments
Recruit reviewers who are fluent in the target language and familiar with the domain and cultural context. Give them a written rubric with positive and negative examples, a way to mark “cannot judge,” and instructions for handling offensive or sensitive material. Measure agreement, discuss disagreements, and keep adjudicated labels separate from the first-pass labels.
PARIKSHA’s scale illustrates why this matters: it studied 30 models across 10 Indic languages with 90,000 human evaluations and 30,000 LLM-based evaluations. Human/LLM agreement dropped in direct assessment, particularly for Bengali and Odia, and the authors reported self-bias in a GPT-based evaluator. Use an automated judge to increase throughput, not to assume ground truth. Calibrate it against fresh human labels for each language and task, and monitor drift when the judge model changes.

Control contamination and preserve reproducibility
Keep a held-out set that is not used for prompt tuning. Check whether public benchmark items may have appeared in model training data or evaluation examples; contamination cannot always be ruled out, but it should be documented as a limitation. Avoid publishing the held-out answers or prompts if doing so would invalidate future tests.
Store a machine-readable run record containing:
- model identifier, release date, and provider;
- dataset and rubric versions, item IDs, and language metadata;
- all prompts, context passages, decoding parameters, and tool outputs;
- evaluator model and instructions, human reviewer qualifications, and adjudication rules;
- scoring code, normalization rules, random seeds where applicable, and raw outputs;
- privacy redactions, access controls, and retention dates.
PARIKSHA identifies benchmark contamination and cultural mismatch in translated tests as evaluation challenges. A reproducible record lets another team distinguish a model change from a test or evaluator change.
Report results so weaknesses cannot hide
A useful report contains:
- a deployment description and risk classification;
- the language-by-task matrix, with script and register conditions;
- dataset versions, sample counts, inclusion criteria, and held-out policy;
- per-language and per-task metrics with uncertainty and denominators;
- human-review method, reviewer expertise, agreement, and adjudication;
- bias scenarios, identity-group coverage, effect sizes, and examples;
- recurring failure categories and their severity;
- known limitations, including untested dialects, domains, scripts, or consequences;
- release thresholds and the remediation required before launch.
Do not publish a lone “Indian language accuracy” figure. If stakeholders need one number, show how it was aggregated and place the slice table beside it. Counts such as IndQA’s 2,278 questions or PARIKSHA’s 90,000 human judgments describe study scope; they are not a model accuracy score or proof of fairness.

Using English translations as the whole test
Problem: translated prompts miss native syntax, idioms, cultural references, and code switching.
Fix: combine translated audit sets with native-authored, culturally grounded prompts and have speakers review both the item and answer key.
Best Value
Pooling all languages
Problem: high-volume or high-resource languages dominate the average.
Fix: publish every language slice, show sample sizes, and choose an explicit weighting rule.
Using a translation score for a reasoning product
Problem: translation quality does not establish factual, cultural, or conversational usefulness.
Fix: add task-matched tests for reasoning, retrieval-grounded answers, safety, and instruction following.
Letting an LLM grade everything
Problem: the evaluator may miss culturally valid answers or favor its own language and style.
Fix: calibrate against fluent human reviewers, inspect disagreement by language, and retain a human-scored audit sample.
Testing stereotypes only with sentiment
Problem: a neutral sentiment score can coexist with unequal recommendations or plausibility judgments.
Fix: use matched identity scenarios and examine decisions, descriptions, refusals, and access-related outputs.
Treating a benchmark as a launch certificate
Problem: no benchmark covers every dialect, identity group, task, or real-world consequence.
Fix: add production-like and held-out cases, document gaps, and continue regression testing after release.
A practical launch decision rule
Set separate gates for capability and harm. A model should meet the required accuracy or rubric threshold in each critical language and task, not merely in the aggregate. It should also have no unresolved severe bias or safety pattern in a deployment-relevant group, and its evaluator should have demonstrated acceptable agreement with qualified humans. If a low-resource language fails while the overall average passes, the product decision is a language-specific launch, restricted functionality, or remediation—not a green light based on the pooled score.
