How to Test AI Code Fixes When the Same Input Gets Different Answers

A differential harness compares candidate fixes under consistent conditions. Combine it with metamorphic relations, regression tests, adversarial inputs, and human review to investigate mismatches without mistaking a passing reproducer for proof of a root-cause fix.

A differential harness checks candidate code fixes against the same inputs and conditions, then flags behavioral differences for investigation. Pair it with metamorphic tests—which check how behavior should change or stay stable when an input is transformed—and a verification ladder of build, reproduction, regression, and adversarial checks. A mismatch is a clue, not a verdict: you still need a credible correctness oracle and human review.

What a differential harness compares

Differential testing runs two or more implementations or candidate patches on the same inputs and compares what happens. For AI-generated fixes, that might mean applying separate patches to the same starting revision, then comparing build results, test outcomes, crashes, outputs, or other observable behavior.

The comparison is useful only if the candidates are supposed to satisfy the same specification. A difference can reveal a defect, but it cannot tell you which candidate is right by itself. You need an oracle: a trusted implementation, an explicit specification, a regression test with a justified expected result, or informed human triage.

Hold the surrounding conditions steady: repository revision, issue description, build and test environment, test inputs, and relevant model settings. Record the prompts and patches as well as logs and environment details. If the harness finds a mismatch, reduce it to a small reproducible case when possible and preserve that case for later regression testing.

How to verify a candidate patch

A useful sequence moves from basic viability to checks that probe whether the apparent fix holds beyond the supplied example. The Defending Code Reference Harness describes this four-check ladder; passing it is evidence, not proof that the root cause is fixed. Read the harness documentation.

  1. Build: Apply the patch to the intended repository revision and check that the project builds in the recorded environment. A build failure means later runtime checks may not be meaningful.
  2. Reproduce: Run the original failing case. If it no longer triggers the observed failure, the patch has addressed that reproducer. This alone does not show that it fixed the underlying cause; it may only avoid that one path or suppress the symptom.
  3. Run regression tests: Check both the relevant tests for the reported issue and the rest of the available regression suite. Keep track of which tests were run and whether they passed, since an untested area is not evidence of preserved behavior.
  4. Re-attack: Try nearby or adversarial inputs that could reach the same bad state by a different route. Fuzzing and targeted variations can expose patches that pass the original example but fail on related cases.

Then inspect the diff. Look for crash suppression that leaves the cause intact, changes outside the issue’s scope, and newly exposed risks. The harness documentation treats its optional style review as advisory and calls for human review of scope and potential new attack surface.

How metamorphic tests handle variable answers

Exact-output equality is often a poor correctness test for open-ended model responses: wording can differ even when the answer is acceptable. Metamorphic testing instead applies a controlled transformation to an input and checks a task-specific relation between the outputs. The metamorph repository illustrates relations such as these:

  • Paraphrase: Reword a question and expect the answer’s meaning to remain stable when the wording change should not matter.
  • Reorder choices: Shuffle multiple-choice options and expect the selected answer to remain the same, expressed using the new option position or label as appropriate.
  • Add irrelevant text: Add content that should not affect the task and check that the answer remains stable.
  • Negate the question: Change a question’s polarity and expect the response to change when the task requires it.

For each test, record the transformation, the relation you expect, the observed outputs, and whether the relation failed. A relation is not automatically a correctness oracle: an overbroad rule can flag valid behavior, and some code changes are meant to alter behavior rather than preserve it. Treat a failed relation as a case to inspect, not an automatic rejection.

What benchmark results can—and cannot—show

A benchmark result describes performance on a particular set of tasks under a particular test protocol. SWE-bench Verified applies generated patches to repositories and evaluates them with FAIL_TO_PASS and PASS_TO_PASS tests. Its write-up discusses limitations including narrow tests and ambiguous tasks, so a pass establishes success under that benchmark’s selected checks, not correctness for every real-world fix. See the SWE-bench Verified write-up.

Published research also reports study-specific differential-testing results. The Mokav authors report that their system generated tests exposing differences for 1,255 of 1,535 program pairs (81.7%) in their benchmark. That is a result for those pairs and that study, not a general pass rate for AI code-fix harnesses. See the Mokav project.

DiffSpec’s authors report 359 differentiating tests and at least four confirmed eBPF bugs in the systems they evaluated. Those findings show what their approach found in that evaluation; they do not predict how many bugs another harness will uncover. Read the DiffSpec preprint.

How to choose what your harness checks

There is no universal ranking of harness designs. Choose checks according to the failure you need to catch, the strength of the available oracle, and the cost of running and investigating them.

  • Oracle quality: Decide whether expected behavior comes from a trusted implementation, a written specification, regression tests, or human review. If no reliable oracle exists, report a mismatch for investigation rather than calling it a failure.
  • Input exploration: Combine known regression cases with generated, fuzzed, adversarial, or transformed inputs when they are relevant to the bug. More runs do not necessarily mean better coverage.
  • Reproducibility: Preserve the repository revision, environment, settings, seeds where applicable, prompts, inputs, patches, and logs so another person can reproduce a result.
  • Failure reduction: Prefer a harness that can shrink a mismatch into a comprehensible reproducer. A small case is easier to debug and more useful as a permanent regression test.
  • Human review: Make sure someone checks whether the patch changes only what it should, hides the symptom, or creates a new risk.
