Test a YouTube gaming rerun by creating an encoder stream with private or unlisted visibility, connecting your encoder, and checking the Live Control Room preview before you go live. Run a representative section of the show, inspect picture, audio and stream health, then verify playback from the watch page. YouTube does not provide a special “rerun” mode; the same encoder workflow applies to gameplay and prerecorded gaming content.
Choose private or unlisted visibility
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the stream and set its visibility to Private or Unlisted for the test. YouTube offers public, private and unlisted visibility for encoder streams. Choose private when access should be tightly limited; choose unlisted when you need to share the watch link with a trusted reviewer. Before testing, check the stream’s visibility and, if someone else needs to review it, confirm access using the account they will use. YouTube’s live stream settings guide describes the visibility and stream controls.

Connect the encoder and check the preview
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder stream and open its stream settings. Copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not share it with reviewers or publish it.
- Start sending the stream from your encoder. Wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, then inspect it before selecting Go live. For a test, keep the stream’s restricted visibility rather than making it public.
- Use YouTube’s encoder setup workflow to end the test when finished. YouTube’s guides cover connecting the encoder, checking the preview and starting or ending the stream: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube live streaming tips.
Run a representative gaming segment
Do not judge the test from a static title screen. Play a segment with the movement and audio mix your public broadcast will use. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. For a gaming rerun, also check that any overlays appear as intended; that is a practical visual check, not a separate YouTube requirement.

- Game and voice audio: Listen for game sound and commentary, if used. Check for silence, clipping, excessive levels, or one source overwhelming the other.
- Overlays: Confirm that alerts, labels and other on-screen elements are visible and do not cover important gameplay.
- Stream health: In Live Control Room, check stream health and any error messages while the encoder is running. YouTube also provides real-time stream metrics in its live stream metrics guide.
Check encoder settings and upload capacity
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers RTMP or RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265 or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; and up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum, and recommends RTMPS as the encrypted extension of RTMP. Choose settings that match your intended output and a quality your connection can sustain. Use YouTube’s current resolution- and frame-rate-specific bitrate guidance rather than assuming one bitrate suits every stream.

YouTube recommends keeping upload capacity about 20% above the total outgoing stream bitrate. Other people and devices using the same connection can reduce the bandwidth available to your encoder. Check your upload speed, account for shared use, and watch stream health during the test. If health problems appear, reduce the encoder load or address available network capacity before the public broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions and its streaming tips on bandwidth and network reliability.
Verify what viewers will see
After the preview looks right, open the stream’s YouTube watch page and check the playback there. When relevant, also check the channel page and a mobile device. A preview inside the encoder or Live Control Room is not a substitute for verifying the actual viewing experience. If a trusted person is reviewing an unlisted test, have them open the link from the account and device they expect to use.

YouTube advises setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. Use that time to catch connection, audio or picture problems while there is still room to fix them—not as a reason to leave a test stream public.

End the test and inspect the recording
Stop sending content from the encoder and end the stream using the YouTube workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but check the actual recording in Studio before relying on it. If you also record locally, inspect the file and confirm that its size has grown as expected; YouTube recommends checking local archive integrity rather than assuming it worked. Previous, current and upcoming streams are available from the Studio Live tab. See the encoder setup guide and the live streaming tips.

Troubleshoot problems before the public broadcast
- No preview appears: Confirm the encoder is sending to the YouTube Live server URL and that the correct stream key is entered. Check the encoder’s connection status and Live Control Room for messages.
- Stream health reports trouble or playback breaks up: Check upload capacity and competing network use. Reduce the selected bitrate or other encoder load if the connection cannot sustain the settings.
- Picture looks wrong in motion: Test gameplay movement rather than a still screen. Recheck the output resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- Game sound or voice is missing or unbalanced: Check the encoder’s audio sources and levels, then repeat the test while listening from the watch page.
- A reviewer cannot view the test: Check whether the stream is private or unlisted and confirm the reviewer is using the intended account and watch link.
- No archive is available: Inspect the Studio Live tab and the stream itself instead of assuming an archive was created. For a local recording, confirm that the file is present and intact.
