How to Keep a YouTube Game Speedrun Stream Playing Overnight from Recorded Runs

Learn how to stream a recorded speedrun overnight on YouTube Live, from channel eligibility and encoder setup to looping, reliability, and the 12-hour archive limit.

To keep a recorded speedrun playing on YouTube Live overnight, send the video file from an encoder connected to a YouTube Live broadcast, and configure the encoder to repeat it if you want a loop. The computer running a software encoder must stay powered on and connected; for a stream that does not depend on a computer at home, use a hosted cloud service. Before you start, verify that your channel can livestream, test the stream and audio, and decide how to handle YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit.

Choose how to run the overnight stream

Option Best fit Trade-offs
StreamNeo cloud service A prerecorded YouTube stream intended to run continuously without leaving a computer on at home. Requires uploading the video and using a paid slot after the free first day; compare the storage allowance and billing period with your needs.
Existing computer and software encoder, such as OBS A one-off overnight broadcast or a creator who can leave a computer running. You manage the file playback and repeat setting, power, internet connection, monitoring, and recovery after interruptions. The precise looping control depends on the software; YouTube’s encoder guidance does not document OBS’s local-file loop steps.
Dedicated hardware encoder Repeated scheduled streams when avoiding a computer is important. Check purchase cost, media scheduling, storage, control, and recovery. YouTube describes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder with optional PlayToStream functionality for scheduled prerecorded media.
Other hosted service A creator considering a cloud workflow other than StreamNeo. YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube live streaming. Confirm the provider’s current features, price, workflow, reliability, and terms directly before choosing.

YouTube also names Upstream.so as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video, but its encoder page does not establish that its specific prerecorded speedrun workflow is equivalent. YouTube’s examples and descriptions are at its encoder overview. An encoder is not a prerequisite purchase: YouTube says expensive equipment is not needed to get started.

Check channel access and prepare the run

  1. Confirm livestream eligibility. Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. If you are enabling live streaming for the first time, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  2. Prepare a rights-cleared recording. Use a speedrun recording and audio you own or have permission to stream. Recorded gameplay or music is not automatically cleared just because it is in a video file. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance and, where relevant, YouTube channel monetization policies; a technically valid broadcast does not itself establish rights or monetization eligibility.
  3. Pick the broadcast’s end and replay plan. Decide whether the stream will stop before 12 hours, restart intentionally, or continue with no expectation of a complete YouTube archive. Keep a local recording if you need a backup.
  4. Check the upload and storage requirements. For a local encoder, make sure the computer has the file and can remain powered on. For a cloud service, allow time to upload the video and confirm it fits the service’s storage limits.

Create a YouTube Live broadcast and connect the encoder

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and choose the encoder workflow. Exact labels can change; follow the current Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder instructions.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream’s settings into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or expose it in a recording, and reset it if you think it has been compromised. YouTube explains the connection in its encoder setup guidance.
  3. Choose the recorded speedrun as the video source. In your chosen software, enable repeat or loop for that source if you want playback to continue when it reaches the end. The exact control and behavior vary by encoder; confirm them in that software’s current documentation, then test whether the video and audio restart cleanly.
  4. Set the intended privacy and scheduling options, then check the broadcast page and preview in Live Control Room before going live. A correct encoder connection does not guarantee the audience can see the broadcast if its visibility or schedule is wrong.

Set a stable video connection

  • Use RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the encoder connection. Select it if your software offers the protocol in its YouTube connection settings.
  • Use constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube’s encoder settings guidance specifies CBR and recommends a two-second keyframe interval. Apply those settings in the encoder rather than assuming its defaults are suitable.
  • Choose a sustainable bitrate. Test the upload connection at the intended resolution and motion level, and use a bitrate your connection can sustain consistently. A speedrun with frequent movement can expose instability that a static test image might not.
  • Preview and watch stream health. Check video, game audio, and any commentary in Live Control Room before sharing the stream. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health; leave enough time to correct problems before the overnight period.

YouTube’s encoder documentation describes the basic role of the software: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” See YouTube Help for the current connection and encoder guidance.

Plan for interruptions and YouTube’s archive limit

A local encoder depends on the computer, power, software, and internet connection staying available. A power loss, network interruption, or software failure can stop playback; YouTube recommends monitoring stream health but does not promise that a local computer will recover automatically. For an unattended setup, assess how the chosen method resumes after each kind of interruption before relying on it overnight.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete replay matters, plan an intentional stop and restart before crossing that threshold or maintain a local archive. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including streams over 12 hours. These are separate concerns: a live broadcast may continue while its full archive or rewind experience is not available. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance and DVR controls and limitations.

Troubleshoot common overnight-stream problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The encoder will not connect Incorrect stream URL or key, an inactive broadcast, or a key that has been reset. Open the stream’s encoder settings in YouTube Studio, copy the current URL and key again, and verify the selected broadcast. Reset a key if it may have been exposed.
The preview is unstable or drops The upload connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate or is inconsistent. Test upload bitrate, lower the encoder bitrate to a stable level, check network reliability, and monitor stream health before leaving it unattended.
The video stops at the end of the run The source is set to play once rather than repeat. Enable the software’s repeat or loop option for the media source and test a full playback cycle. Refer to the current documentation for that encoder’s exact control.
The broadcast is live but viewers cannot find or watch it The stream may be private, scheduled for a different time, or not yet started in the intended broadcast. Check the broadcast’s visibility and schedule in YouTube Studio, then verify the public viewing page before the overnight session.
The replay is missing or incomplete The broadcast exceeded 12 hours or YouTube did not capture the full stream. Keep a local archive, or schedule an intentional stop and restart before the 12-hour threshold if a YouTube replay is important.
The stream stops after a power, network, or software interruption A local setup lost a required resource and did not recover. Restore the computer, connection, or encoder; reconnect using the active stream settings and check the Live Control Room preview. For unattended use, choose a workflow with recovery behavior suited to your needs.
