Use Playwright Test to render a page at a defined tablet viewport, capture it with toHaveScreenshot(), and compare later runs with a reviewed reference image. A device preset is convenient when you want its registered emulation settings; an explicit width and height is better when you are testing a particular responsive breakpoint.
Set up a tablet-sized Playwright test
Install Playwright Test in your project if it is not already installed, then add a test that selects the viewport or device context you intend to cover. This example uses a registered iPad preset; the exact name available depends on your installed Playwright version, so check that version’s device registry. Playwright’s emulation documentation explains device parameters and viewport overrides.

});The dimensions in that example are a test choice, not a universal definition of a tablet. Select dimensions that exercise the breakpoints and layouts relevant to your site. A viewport can also be overridden after applying a device configuration.

What the screenshot assertion checks
The first run creates a reference screenshot for the test. Later runs capture the page again and compare the result with that baseline. When the image differs, inspect the generated comparison before deciding whether to update the reference: a difference may be an intended design change or a regression. Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive captures to match before comparing the final capture with the expectation. That helps avoid capturing a page while it is still changing, but your test should still make its route, data, and visible state predictable. Choose the right capture area
Use the smallest capture that answers the question you are testing. A viewport screenshot is useful for checking what a tablet user sees without scrolling. A full-page image is appropriate when the entire document’s layout matters, while a component screenshot can keep a test focused on one responsive region. Playwright’s assertion API describes viewport and full-page capture options.

- Full page: checks document-wide layout, including sections below the fold.
- Component: narrows changes to a specific element when the component is the unit under test.
Make visual comparisons stable and useful
Keep the execution environment consistent
Record the browser project and use the same browser and operating-system environment for baseline creation and later runs where practical. Playwright notes that “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode.” Those differences can create noisy image diffs even when the site has not meaningfully changed.

Control changing page content
Use predictable test data and wait for meaningful page readiness before capturing. If timestamps, rotating promotions, or other volatile content create noise, Playwright’s visual comparison documentation describes applying a stylesheet to filter dynamic content. Keep any filtering narrow: masking or hiding large areas can conceal the very tablet layout defect the test is meant to catch.
Review before updating a baseline
Generate the baseline in the environment you intend to use for routine runs, commit it with the test, then review each changed image and its diff before accepting an update. Do not treat an update command as proof that the new layout is correct; it only changes the expected image.

Choose coverage across tablet targets
A useful tablet visual test specifies more than a device name. For every target, decide and record:
- The viewport width and height, or the device preset and the installed Playwright version that provides it.
- The browser engine and version used to capture the baseline.
- The operating system and rendering environment.
- Whether the test captures a component, the current viewport, or the full page.
Use multiple viewport tests when the site’s layout changes at more than one relevant breakpoint. Emulated dimensions test responsive behavior in the selected browser context; they are not a substitute for verifying a design on every physical tablet model.

Troubleshoot common screenshot-test failures
- The preset name is undefined or missing: device names depend on the installed Playwright registry. Check the registry for your version, or use an explicit viewport.
- The same test produces noisy diffs: verify that browser, operating system, headless mode, settings, and other rendering conditions match the baseline environment. Stabilize test data and dynamic page content.
- The first run reports a missing snapshot: this is the reference-generation step. Review the captured image and commit it only after confirming it represents the intended layout.
- A diff appears after a design change: inspect the image and comparison output. If the visual change is intended, update the baseline through the project’s snapshot workflow; if not, fix the layout rather than accepting the changed image.
- The screenshot captures an unfinished state: make the UI state deterministic and wait for meaningful readiness before the assertion. The assertion’s consecutive-capture stability check does not replace application-specific readiness.
- A full-page image hides the source of a change: use a viewport or component capture where that is sufficient, so unrelated page regions do not make the comparison harder to review.
