Test a rupee price in two complementary ways: assert the exact text your product promises for a chosen locale and currency, then compare a screenshot of the rendered price against a reviewed baseline. The text assertion catches a wrong value or format directly; the screenshot catches visual regressions such as spacing, symbol placement, clipping, or alignment.
Define the price-format contract first
Before writing a test, decide what the application promises to display. A rupee symbol alone does not identify every currency, so use the intended currency code explicitly (for example, INR when that is the product’s currency) and specify the locale rather than relying on the machine’s default. Intl.NumberFormat formats numbers according to a locale and options; currency formatting uses style: 'currency' and a currency code. See MDN’s Intl.NumberFormat constructor reference and MDN’s internationalization overview.

- Locale: list the locales the product supports, such as
en-IN, and decide whether a user can select locale independently of region. - Currency: choose the actual currency code used by the price, not just a visual symbol.
- Precision and rounding: define fraction digits and how values are rounded for the product. The API supports formatting options, but your product contract must determine the intended policy.
- Presentation: decide whether the UI should show a currency symbol or code, and where that choice is governed—by application policy, locale, or a user-selected setting.
Do not copy a supposedly universal INR string into a test without checking your application’s supported runtime and browser matrix. Locale-sensitive formatting can include non-breaking spaces or bidirectional controls, and output can vary among implementations. MDN documents that variation in its format method reference.
Choose values that expose formatting errors
A single ordinary price may not reveal a grouping or rounding bug. Build a small test matrix around your actual product rules:
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- A small amount, to check basic symbol or code presentation.
- A value with fractional units, to exercise the agreed precision and rounding behavior.
- A value near a grouping transition, to catch a separator appearing in the wrong place.
- A larger amount, to expose Indian lakh/crore grouping where that is part of the supported locale behavior.
- Zero, discounts, or negative/refund values only when those states are supported by the UI.
Grouping is locale-sensitive. For example, MDN shows the decimal number 123456.789 formatted for en-IN as 1,23,456.789. That is a decimal-formatting example, not a canonical rupee currency string; do not treat it as one.
Write a text assertion and a screenshot assertion
Use Playwright Test to put the page in a deterministic price state, assert the application’s agreed display text, and then capture the component. Replace the fixture path, test ID, locale, currency policy, and expected string with values from your application. The example is a pattern to adapt, not a verified universal INR output:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('renders the agreed INR price for en-IN', async ({ browser }) => {
const context = await browser.newContext({ locale: 'en-IN' });
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('/product?fixture=price-boundary');
// Define this from the product contract and supported runtime matrix.
const expectedPriceForEnIN = process.env.EXPECTED_PRICE_EN_IN;
if (!expectedPriceForEnIN) {
throw new Error('Set EXPECTED_PRICE_EN_IN to the product-approved display string');
}
await expect(page.getByTestId('price')).toHaveText(expectedPriceForEnIN);
await expect(page.getByTestId('price')).toHaveScreenshot('price-en-IN.png');
await context.close();
});
The explicit expected value makes the text check meaningful without pretending that one literal is correct across all runtimes. Store and review the expected value as part of the application’s supported behavior. A context locale is useful only if the application actually derives formatting from the browser locale. If the UI has an explicit locale selector or a fixed product policy, set that state in the test and assert it directly. A community example demonstrates the context-locale pattern, but it does not establish the correct rupee output: Playwright community discussion.
Use toHaveScreenshot() on the price locator for a focused component diff, or on page when the surrounding page layout is part of the requirement. Playwright records a reference screenshot on the first run and compares later captures with it. Screenshot snapshots depend on the rendering environment, including browser and host operating system. Review Playwright’s snapshot testing documentation.

Keep visual baselines stable and review changes
Generate and review initial baselines on the same browser, operating system, and rendering setup used in CI. Keep the price state, viewport, fonts, and relevant page content deterministic. Playwright screenshot assertions wait for two consecutive captures to match before comparison, and provide controls for animation, styling, image scale, masks, and acceptable differences. See the PageAssertions API.
- Disable or control animations and time-dependent transitions when they make the capture nondeterministic.
- Stabilize data, viewport, fonts, and dynamic page elements so a screenshot diff represents a product change rather than environmental noise.
- Use masks or stylesheet controls when unrelated volatile content cannot be made deterministic.
- Set a visual-difference threshold only after deciding which differences are harmless for this price component. A permissive threshold can hide a real spacing or clipping regression.
- When a design change is intentional, inspect the diff and update the snapshot deliberately using Playwright’s update-snapshots flow; do not automatically accept unexplained changes.
Diagnose the failures
- Text assertion fails but the screenshot looks plausible: check the selected locale, currency code, fraction-digit policy, and expected value. Also check whether the app derives locale from the browser or from its own selector.
- Text passes but screenshot differs: inspect symbol placement, spacing, font rendering, alignment, clipping, and the browser/OS used to create the baseline. Confirm that the test and CI use a consistent rendering environment.
- The same test produces intermittent diffs: stabilize the fixture and dynamic content, then address animations, delayed assets, and changing fonts or viewport dimensions. Use Playwright’s screenshot controls for remaining volatility.
- Only CI fails: compare CI’s browser, host OS, fonts, and viewport with the baseline environment. Playwright snapshots are environment-sensitive, so do not treat an unexplained cross-platform difference as an approved change.
- A hard-coded expected string disagrees across machines: determine whether the product promises one normalized string or runtime-native locale output. Align the test to the actual product contract and supported runtime matrix; Unicode spaces and controls may not be visually obvious.
- A broad page screenshot is noisy: snapshot the price locator when the question is the price component itself. Keep a page-level screenshot only when surrounding layout is also under test.
What each assertion contributes
| Check | Best at catching | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Exact text assertion | Wrong amount, wrong separators, unexpected precision, or an incorrect symbol/code string. | Visual alignment, clipping, overlap, or other layout defects. |
| Focused screenshot | Symbol placement, spacing, truncation, font/layout changes, and alignment around the price. | Whether the displayed value is semantically correct unless paired with an explicit text check. |
| Full-page screenshot | Price appearance in its larger page context and surrounding layout changes. | Reliable isolation from unrelated dynamic content unless the page is deterministic. |
Playwright’s documentation distinguishes targeted assertions from snapshots and notes that broad snapshots can be problematic for dynamic output. For a price display, the text check and focused screenshot usually answer different questions rather than duplicating one another.

Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot artifact without configuring browser automation, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF. It can accept consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the response identifying the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture.
For a simple capture, replace the URL with your deterministic test route and supply your API key:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/product?fixture=price-boundary -o price.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The screenshot is useful as an artifact, but it does not replace the DOM text assertion or a reviewed Playwright baseline when those are the checks you need. ScreenshotNeo’s Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for the free plan.
