Test the app in an iPad mini simulator at several widths and in both orientations, then verify important interactions on a physical iPad mini if available. Decide whether to show two panels from the space the app actually has—not from a device-name or portrait-versus-landscape check—and provide a clear single-column experience when that space becomes compact.
What to test: available width, not just the iPad mini label
A two-panel layout can fit in one iPad mini window and become cramped in another. Apple’s size classes describe the space available to a view, and can change with orientation, window configuration, and multitasking. Split views are intended for regular-width environments; in compact space, multiple panes can force text to wrap or truncate. Test narrow, intermediate, and wider window widths, including the point where the interface changes from two panels to one. A single screenshot labeled “iPad mini” cannot show how a resizable app behaves across those states. Apple’s split-view guidance discusses when panes fit and how they should behave.
Choose the layout behavior before testing
SwiftUI
Use the horizontal size class as one input to the layout decision, and account for it changing while the app is running. Apple describes NavigationView as multicolumn in regular width and single-column otherwise. Check the API documentation against your app’s deployment target before adopting or changing a specific navigation API.

UIKit
UISplitViewController supports a double-column style and manages collapse and expand transitions as size classes change. Confirm that the collapsed state preserves the user’s selection and gives them a clear route back to the content they were viewing. See Apple’s UISplitViewController documentation.
Define a useful compact state
When two panels no longer fit, transition to a single-column navigation path or another deliberate compact presentation. Keep the current task and context understandable: for example, if a user selected an item in a list, the detail should remain accessible after the list and detail stop appearing side by side. Do not simply shrink both panes until their text or controls become difficult to use.
Run the app in an iPad mini simulator

In Xcode, select the app’s scheme and choose an iPad mini simulator as the run destination. Available simulator destinations depend on the platform support installed in Xcode and the selected scheme.

Build and run the app. Apple documents run destinations and the differences between simulated and physical devices in Running your app on simulated or physical devices.

Inspect the app in portrait and landscape, then at full-screen and reduced window widths using the available Simulator or app window controls. Include the supported multitasking configurations relevant to your app; do not assume that one fixed simulator size represents every usable layout.

Resize gradually around the point where the two-panel layout becomes compact. Watch the transition as well as the resulting states: Apple recommends checking common system-provided sizes, varied window widths, and smooth transitions. Its layout guidance covers window sizing and adaptive layout.

Check content, navigation, and resizing behavior
At every width where two panels remain visible, check that both are legible and that their controls can be used. In the compact state, confirm that the user can still move between the list, detail, or equivalent sections and can tell which item or section is selected. Resize while partway through a task and check that the app does not discard the selection or leave the user in an unclear navigation state.

Vary appearance and accessibility settings
Where relevant to the app, use Simulator’s environment controls to check larger text, dark appearance, orientation, and localization or other layout variants. Apple documents these options in Configuring the environment of a simulated device. Larger text and localized strings can change whether two panels remain comfortable even when the window dimensions have not changed.

Use a physical iPad mini for device-dependent checks
Simulator is convenient for repeatable layout checks, but it does not reproduce every hardware-specific feature or performance characteristic. Run the app on a physical iPad mini when practical to confirm real touch behavior, hardware-dependent services, and final appearance. Apple explains the simulator’s limits and the role of physical-device testing in its device-running guidance.
Match the simulator and hardware model to the project’s supported devices and operating-system versions. Avoid relying on an older screen-size label as the dimensions of a current mini: Apple’s HIG history records that 8.3-inch iPad mini specifications were added on February 2, 2024, and Apple lists a dimensional drawing for iPad mini (A17 Pro). The relevant simulator model and OS version are the ones your app needs to support.
