How the staging-versus-production comparison works
BackstopJS uses two captures for each scenario: a reference image and a test image. In this workflow, production supplies the reference and staging supplies the test. The difference report highlights visual changes; it does not determine whether a difference is a bug or an intended update.

The scenario’s url is the page captured during a test run. Its optional referenceUrl is the corresponding page captured by backstop reference. This separation lets one scenario compare two environments.
Set up BackstopJS and define scenarios

In the generated configuration, create scenarios for the routes you need to check. Give each scenario a recognizable label, set
urlto the staging route, and setreferenceUrlto its production counterpart. -
Configure at least one viewport for each scenario. Keep scenario labels and viewport names stable so report entries and screenshot files remain easy to identify between runs.

Choose what each scenario captures
Capture scope should match the risk you want to inspect. BackstopJS supports document for the whole page, viewport for the current visible area, and element selectors for a component or page region.
- Whole document: useful when changes may affect the full page, including content below the fold.
- Viewport: useful when the visible initial screen is the specific comparison target.
- Element: useful when a change is limited to a component or defined region.
Choose routes and viewports deliberately: a broad capture can reveal unexpected page-wide changes, while focused element captures can make a component-level change easier to review. There is no single coverage configuration that fits every site.

Capture production, test staging, and review the report

From the project’s BackstopJS installation, run
backstop reference. This captures the configured production URLs throughreferenceUrland creates or refreshes the reference images.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Run
backstop test. BackstopJS captures the staging URLs inurl, compares those test bitmaps with the current references, and produces a visual report. -
Review each reported difference in context. Decide whether it is an intended staging change, an unwanted regression, or rendering variation before taking action.

If the differences are intentional and accepted, run
backstop approve. This promotes the latest test captures into the reference collection for subsequent comparisons.
Approving is not just dismissing a report: it changes the baseline. The BackstopJS README states, “Approving changes will update your reference files with the results from your last test.” Do not approve unresolved differences if later tests should continue to compare against the previous production baseline.

Differences in browser or operating environment can introduce visual variation unrelated to the site change. The BackstopJS README recommends Docker when cross-machine rendering differences are a concern. Use a consistent rendering setup for reference and test captures where possible.

When running Docker, remember that localhost inside the container may not point to the host machine. The README gives host.docker.internal as an alternative on Mac and Windows. If a target is unreachable from the container, check the URL as seen from inside that environment rather than assuming the host’s localhost address will work.
Common problems and practical fixes
- Staging is being compared to staging, or production to production. Check the mapping:
urlmust be staging for test captures, andreferenceUrlmust be the production counterpart for reference captures. - A route is missing or does not load during capture. Verify that both environment URLs are reachable from the machine or container running BackstopJS, and that the paths point to equivalent pages.
- The report shows many small differences across machines. Rendering environments may differ. Align the environment used for captures or use Docker as the README recommends for reducing cross-machine variation.
- Docker cannot reach a host-served site at localhost. On Mac and Windows, try the README’s
host.docker.internalalternative and confirm the service is accessible from the container. - A component change is obscured by unrelated page differences. Consider whether an element selector is a better capture scope than the whole document, while retaining broader scenarios for risks that extend beyond that component.
- Future comparisons stop showing an accepted difference. Check whether
backstop approvewas run: it replaces the reference collection with the latest test captures.

Using BackstopJS in CI
The BackstopJS README documents reporting and CI options, but whether visual differences should block a release is a team decision. Define which scenarios and viewports are release-critical, who reviews flagged changes, and when an accepted change should replace the baseline. Keep that approval decision distinct from the act of capturing or generating a report.
