How to Test a Screenshot API Endpoint with Postman

Use the screenshot provider’s exact method, endpoint, authentication, and parameters in Postman, then verify both the API response and the page captured.

To test a screenshot API in Postman, create a request using the provider’s documented method, endpoint, authentication, and parameters; send it; then inspect both the HTTP response and the captured page. There is no universal screenshot API request shape: one service may return image bytes from a GET request, while another expects JSON in a POST request or returns JSON or a redirect.

Build the request from the provider’s endpoint documentation

  1. Create a request: In Postman, choose the HTTP method and enter the exact endpoint URL shown in the screenshot provider’s current documentation. The examples reviewed include GET /v1/screenshot, GET or POST /api/v1/screenshot, and POST /v1/screenshot; these are examples from different services, not interchangeable endpoints. See screenshot-api.net, screenshot-api.org, and ScreenshotEngine.
  2. Set authentication: Use the precise scheme the endpoint requires. Examples across providers include a bearer token, an X-API-Key header, and Basic Auth. Do not assume one scheme works in place of another.
  3. Add the target page and capture settings: Enter the page URL and options where the API expects them—often query parameters for GET requests or a JSON body for POST requests. Use only documented field names. Options documented by one reviewed API include viewport dimensions, output format, and full-page capture.
  4. Send the request: Click Send. Check the HTTP status, response headers, and body format before deciding whether the test succeeded.

Example request shapes: follow the provider, not a template

Documented example Method and request style Authentication and response
screenshot-api.net GET /v1/screenshot; query parameters Bearer authentication; raw image bytes on the screenshot endpoint
screenshot-api.org GET or POST /api/v1/screenshot Bearer or X-API-Key; JSON by default, with a documented redirect option
ScreenshotEngine POST /v1/screenshot; JSON body Bearer authentication; quickstart describes saving a PNG response
LambdaTest Postman Network example Screenshot test request Basic Auth example

These examples illustrate why the provider’s own current reference is decisive. Confirm the path, method, parameter names, credential format, and response behavior before sending a request.

Inspect the response and verify the captured page

Check API success and response type

A successful HTTP status only shows that the API handled the request; it does not prove the intended page was captured. Inspect Postman’s status and headers, especially Content-Type, then examine the response body. Depending on the endpoint, you may receive image bytes, JSON, or a redirect. For binary output, use Postman’s response view or its save/download handling to inspect the resulting file. For JSON, check the fields documented by that provider.

Check what the browser rendered

Open or save the image and confirm that it shows the expected page, rather than a login screen, error page, or other unexpected content. Screenshot API documents X-Page-Status as a signal for the final target-page status; consult its endpoint documentation for the precise meaning and availability of that header. A page can render successfully as an image even when its content is not the page you wanted.

Troubleshoot common Postman test failures

Symptom What to check Next step
Authentication error Whether the endpoint requires a bearer token, API-key header, or Basic Auth, and whether the credential is in the expected location. Match the provider’s documented scheme and header or Postman authorization setting; do not move credentials between formats without documentation.
Request rejected or wrong endpoint Exact host and path, HTTP method, required fields, and whether parameters belong in the URL or a JSON body. Compare the request with the provider’s current endpoint reference and correct the method, path, or payload.
Response is not an image Content-Type, response body, and whether the endpoint returns JSON or redirects instead of raw bytes. Handle the documented response type in Postman. For JSON, inspect its documented fields; for a redirect, follow the provider’s documented behavior.
The image shows a login or error page The image itself and any target-page status signal, such as X-Page-Status where supported. Verify that the requested URL is accessible in the capture context and interpret the page status using that provider’s documentation.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is simply to get a screenshot from a URL, ScreenshotNeo offers a GET endpoint that returns an image or PDF. Its one-call cURL example is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the endpoint and options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
