How to Test a Running Website Against a Figma Design With Applitools

Applitools Eyes Figma Dev Comparison links a Figma design to a supported web test so you can compare the implementation, review changes, and manage accepted baselines.

Use Applitools Eyes’ current Figma Dev Comparison integration to link a Figma frame, component, or component set to an Eyes test, then compare the running implementation with that design. You’ll need an Eyes SDK in a supported web framework and a Figma personal access token with the file_content:read scope. The integration matches the test viewport to the design; its comparison mode determines whether a changed design or an accepted test baseline is used as the reference. Applitools’ Figma Dev Comparison documentation is the current setup reference.

What Figma Dev Comparison checks

Applitools Eyes performs visual UI regression testing by capturing screenshots at application states called checkpoints and comparing them with visual baselines. With Figma Dev Comparison, a linked Figma design participates in that baseline workflow: Eyes compares a rendered implementation with the design reference, then lets reviewers inspect and accept or reject visual changes.

This is a design-to-implementation check. It does not validate or edit the Figma file as a general design-QA tool. Applitools says linked runs create a short-lived Eyes test to render the design reference; that test is removed afterward, though a transient dashboard entry may appear.

Check SDK and framework support

Use an Eyes SDK with a supported web integration. The current documentation lists:

  • JavaScript/TypeScript: Playwright (Fixtures and Standard), Cypress, Storybook, Selenium, and WebdriverIO.
  • Java: Selenium and Playwright.
  • Python: Selenium and Playwright.
  • .NET: Selenium and Playwright.

Native mobile support is described as planned for a future release, not as available for this workflow. Follow the setup instructions for your SDK and framework; the exact code and test-name resolution differ by integration.

Connect a Figma design to an Eyes test

  1. Create a Figma personal access token. Grant it the file_content:read scope so the integration can read the design.
  2. Make the token available to the SDK. Set FIGMA_ACCESS_TOKEN or provide it with the accessToken option in figmaOptions. If neither is available and offline/cache-only mode is not enabled, the Figma API call fails.
  3. Copy the link to the design selection. Use the Figma URL for the frame, component, or component set you want to compare.
  4. Associate that URL with the test. Configure the project’s figmaBaselines mapping so the relevant Eyes test name points to the Figma URL. The mapping key must match the test or story name as resolved by your selected SDK. For a single URL, the SDK also offers a direct setup function.
  5. Choose the comparison mode. Set the mode that matches how your team wants design changes and accepted implementation changes handled.
  6. Run the test and review the Eyes result. Eyes sizes the test viewport to match the linked design. Inspect the differences, accept intended implementation changes, and reject bugs to keep the prior accepted baseline active.

For exact SDK-specific mapping syntax and the direct setup function, use the relevant examples in the Figma Dev Comparison documentation.

Choose how the design and test baseline interact

The mode controls which reference Eyes uses. In particular, automatic reconciliation is different from always comparing with the latest Figma design.

Mode How it behaves Useful when
auto-baseline The default. A design change since the last accepted implementation baseline triggers comparison against the linked design. After an implementation is accepted, later runs use that accepted baseline until the linked design changes. You want design updates to prompt a new comparison, followed by normal regression checks against an accepted implementation.
figma-baseline Always uses the current linked design as the reference. Each run should track the current design rather than rely on the accepted test baseline.
test-baseline Uses the accepted Eyes test baseline. You want to compare against the accepted implementation baseline.
disabled Turns off the integration. You need the test to run without Figma comparison.

You can configure the mode with the SDK options or the APPLITOOLS_FIGMA_MODE environment variable, as documented by Applitools. Make the choice intentionally for local development and CI so a design change does not produce a different reference than your team expects.

Review differences and maintain baselines

On an initial visual-testing run, captured checkpoints become baselines. On subsequent runs, reviewers inspect differences and accept legitimate changes or reject differences caused by bugs. With Figma Dev Comparison, design changes renew the design comparison; once an implementation is accepted in auto-baseline mode, ordinary runs use that accepted implementation baseline until the linked design changes again.

Eyes results expose design context including the design name, type, revision, last-modified time, and comparison mode. Use that context when reviewing a difference so you can distinguish a changed design reference from an implementation regression.

Common setup problems

  • Figma design cannot be resolved: check that the personal access token is valid, has file_content:read, and is available through FIGMA_ACCESS_TOKEN or figmaOptions.accessToken. Also check whether offline/cache-only mode is enabled.
  • URL validation fails: confirm you copied a valid Figma link to the intended frame or selection. A non-Figma URL is a validation error.
  • The design is attached to the wrong test or not found: compare the figmaBaselines mapping key with the test or story name the selected SDK actually resolves.
  • Results use an unexpected reference: inspect the configured mode and APPLITOOLS_FIGMA_MODE. figma-baseline always follows the current design, while test-baseline uses the accepted test baseline; auto-baseline reconciles design changes with accepted implementation baselines.
  • A temporary test appears in the dashboard: linked runs use a short-lived Eyes test to render the design reference, and a transient entry may appear before it is removed.
  • You need to check the Figma file itself: this integration checks a running implementation against a design; it is not a general tool for validating or editing the Figma file.

How the current integration differs from the legacy plugin

Older tutorials may show the Eyes Figma plugin, which exports selected frames to Eyes for design-to-design or design-to-code comparisons. Its documented workflow requires an active Applitools account and valid API key; first exports are auto-accepted as baselines unless that setting is changed, and later exports compare against those baselines. Applitools’ plugin documentation says it will be deprecated in favor of Figma Dev Comparison. See the Eyes Figma Plugin documentation if you are maintaining that older export workflow.

Applitools’ September 15, 2026 product update describes Figma frame URL baselines without plugin installation, manual export, or baseline upload. For the detailed setup and mode behavior, use the current Figma design baseline update alongside the Dev Comparison documentation.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a standalone screenshot rather than an Eyes design-to-implementation test, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API can return a screenshot or PDF; it does not replace the Figma-linked baseline and review workflow described above.

For example, save a screenshot of a page as WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and request details. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
