Before you pay for a used foldable, check six things: the inner screen, the outer screen, the hinge behavior, everyday hardware, the exact model and identifier, and what the manufacturer will still cover. Walk away if there is a crack, black spot, abnormal line or lifting film. Also walk away if the seller won’t let you check the serial number or IMEI. A fold line alone is not proof of damage.
Before you meet the seller
- Ask for the exact model name and storage variant, and whether the phone has ever been repaired, including screen or film replacement.
- Ask whether the seller has proof of purchase. Receipts can matter if warranty is still running.
- Pick a place with bright, neutral light and a power outlet or a charger you can use to test charging.
- Bring a SIM or eSIM you can use for a quick connectivity test, and a pair of earbuds if you want to test audio output.
1. Inspect the inner and outer screens
Hold the phone under good light and tilt it from several angles. Look across the fold line and around the edges of the inner display for:

- cracks or uneven impact damage
- black or bright spots
- colored or abnormal lines
- bubbles or lifting at the protective film
- anything that changes as the phone is opened and closed
Samsung’s support guidance says impact can cause cracks, black spots or abnormal lines in a display, and recommends professional inspection and repair for a damaged screen (Samsung Support US, “Samsung Galaxy device screen is cracked or damaged”). Inspect the outer screen the same way.
Then test touch across the entire inner panel. Use ordinary on-screen controls such as scrolling, dragging an app icon to every corner and typing on the keyboard. Dead zones, ghost touches or lag in one region are reasons to stop.

Is the crease a problem?
Some crease is expected, but the evidence is model-specific. Samsung’s Gulf support page says the crease on the Galaxy Z Fold5’s main screen “is a normal feature, not a defect,” yet the same page says a significantly deeper or uneven crease should be referred to support (Samsung Gulf Support, updated June 29, 2026). Samsung also says fine bends and wrinkles can be visible in the folding area. Don’t treat that as a blanket assurance for every foldable. The useful distinction is between a regular fold line and one that comes with screen damage, distortion or poor function.
The protective film
The inner screen has a protective film that is separate from the display panel. Samsung describes it as replaceable, but warns that removing it arbitrarily may damage the panel and that uncertified film can distort the image or affect performance. Its guidance for the Galaxy Z Flip4 and Z Fold4 says: “It is highly recommended to always use your phone with the protective film attached.” Current model guidance may differ, so check your model’s page.

- Do not peel the film or press hard on the screen during inspection.
- If the film is bubbled or lifting, ask whether the panel under it has been inspected and who replaced the film, if anyone did.
- If the damage is film-only, plan on a model-matched replacement from a manufacturer-approved or service channel, and factor that into your offer.
2. Check the hinge by function, not by feel alone
Open and close the phone slowly through its normal range. Don’t force it, and don’t cycle it repeatedly to show off durability. Test it fully open and in a partially folded position, and watch the display as the hinge moves. Flickering, blanking, unexpected changes or inconsistent movement are things to note and question.
The official sources reviewed give no universal hinge pass/fail standard: no set torque, sound, angle or fold count. So don’t treat a particular click, stiffness or sound as proof either way. Likewise, nobody can infer remaining hinge life from a fold count. Judge the hinge by how the phone and display behave, and by whether the seller will allow a repair assessment.

- The 6.7″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X foldable main screen supports an adaptive 48–120 Hz refresh rate and HDR10+, offering incredibly fluid motion for gaming, media playback, and split-screen multitasking when using Flex Mode.
Google’s Pixel Fold guidance adds a handling point that applies to any inspection: the flexible screen is softer than a conventional phone screen, so keep crumbs, fingernails and sharp objects away from it, and make sure no fine particles are caught at the display or hinge when closing.
3. Test everyday hardware
On supported Samsung phones, Samsung Members and Device care provide interactive diagnostics. Depending on model and software, they can include tests for touch screen, battery status, camera, speaker, microphone, buttons, sensors, charging, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile network and fingerprint recognition (Samsung Support, “Check your Samsung Galaxy device status and run diagnostics”). What appears varies by model and software version.

Treat diagnostics as a screening step. The source does not say they can rule out intermittent faults or predict remaining life, so confirm the important functions yourself:

| Area | What to do |
|---|---|
| Cameras | Take photos and video with every lens, inner and outer; check focus and zoom. |
| Audio | Play media on the speaker, make a test call, record a voice memo to check the microphone. |
| Buttons and sensors | Press every button; test fingerprint or face unlock and auto-rotate. |
| Charging | Plug in a cable and confirm it charges; try wireless charging if the model supports it. |
| Connectivity | Connect to Wi-Fi, pair Bluetooth, make a call or load a page on mobile data. |
| Battery | Check the battery status in diagnostics where available, and watch for rapid drain during your test. |
Google notes that warranty support may address issues such as charging, microphone, speaker, button, network and certain display problems, subject to eligibility (Google Pixel Phone Help, “Check warranty eligibility”). That is a good reason to test these functions, but eligibility is decided through the manufacturer’s process, not by your quick demonstration.

4. Verify identity, warranty and repair history
- Confirm the model name on the box, settings and the seller’s listing all match.
- Find the IMEI or serial number in Settings (About phone) and check it against the phone’s label or box.
- Check it through the manufacturer’s warranty tool for your country. Samsung says available warranty and care tools depend on model, software version and country, and the Canadian page covers diagnostics and coverage on supported devices only (Samsung Support Canada, updated October 1, 2026). Don’t carry terms across regions.
- Ask about prior repairs. Google says accidental, liquid, physical, cosmetic and unauthorized-repair damage can affect coverage or repair eligibility.
- Make sure the phone isn’t locked to a previous owner’s account or carrier before you pay.
5. Don’t test water or dust resistance
Never dunk or splash a used phone to check its seal. Ratings are model-specific and can degrade. For Pixel Fold, Google says the device is not dust resistant, and that its water resistance is not permanent and may diminish or be lost through wear, repair, disassembly or damage. Assume a used or repaired foldable may no longer have factory protection, and check the exact model’s official documentation for its rating.
6. Decide: buy, negotiate or walk
| Finding | Sensible response |
|---|---|
| Cracks, black spots, abnormal lines, dead touch zones | Walk away, or get an authorized repair quote before buying. |
| Flicker or blanking while the hinge moves | Pause the purchase; get a service assessment. |
| Film-only wear | Negotiate for the cost of a model-matched approved replacement. |
| Regular fold line, no other symptoms | Expected on at least some models; not a defect on its own. |
| Failed diagnostics or hardware test | Retest once; if it persists, treat as a defect. |
| Seller refuses serial check or repair history | Walk away. |
When comparing two used phones, weigh display condition, hinge and screen consistency, diagnostics results, verified repair history, remaining warranty or support, and the cost and availability of authorized repair in your country. No single repair cost or coverage outcome applies across models and regions, so get a quote for the specific model before paying a premium for a “cheap” listing. Cosmetic condition, remaining warranty and repair eligibility each carry different consequences.
