Yes. ChatGPT ads may be personalized using the current conversation, information about the ad and advertiser, and—if ad personalization is enabled—selected signals from your broader ChatGPT experience, such as past chats, memory, and ad interactions. OpenAI says these signals are used within ChatGPT, not shared with advertisers, who receive aggregate performance reporting instead.
What information can ChatGPT use to select ads?
OpenAI says ad selection can consider several kinds of information. These are possible signals, not a promise that every signal is used for every ad or account.

- Your current conversation: its context and intent, including the current thread and potentially personalized model responses.
- The ad and advertiser material: the ad’s title, copy, landing page, advertiser-provided context hints, and targeting selections.
- General context: factors such as general location and language. OpenAI says an ad’s language may reflect your location, language settings, and the language of your conversation.
- Broader ChatGPT signals, if personalization is on: past chats, memory, and interactions with ads, such as hiding or engaging with one.
OpenAI describes these inputs in its Ads in ChatGPT FAQ and Ads in ChatGPT: The Basics.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat changes when ad personalization is off?
Turning personalization off limits which broader ChatGPT signals OpenAI says it uses for ad selection. The current chat thread may still inform an ad; other chats, ad history, and topics are not used when personalization is off. This setting changes ad selection, not necessarily whether ads appear.

| Setting | Signals OpenAI says may inform selection | Does this setting itself remove ads? |
|---|---|---|
| Personalization on | Current conversation, ad and advertiser information, general context, and selected broader signals such as past chats, memory, and ad interactions. | No. Personalization controls what signals may be considered; it is not the same as an ad-free option. |
| Personalization off | Current conversation and ad or advertiser information may still be considered; other chats, ad history, and topics are not used. | No. Turning personalization off does not itself stop ads. |
OpenAI says separate plan or account options may avoid ads, depending on eligibility and availability. Its ads FAQ describes ads as limited to eligible accounts and rolling out in selected regions, so check your current account rather than assuming a plan or feature is available everywhere. OpenAI’s ads FAQ covers eligibility and controls; ChatGPT privacy settings explains account controls.
Can advertisers see your chats, memories, or personal details?
OpenAI says no: advertisers do not receive your chats, chat history, memories, name, email address, precise location, IP address, or sensitive information such as health or political topics. OpenAI says advertisers receive aggregate ad-performance reporting, such as views and clicks, rather than the underlying conversations or personal signals used to choose ads.

That distinction matters: information may help determine which ad appears without being disclosed to the advertiser. OpenAI also says the ad system is separate from ChatGPT’s answer generation: “Ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers.”

How to manage personalization and clear ads data
When ads and the relevant controls are available on your account, use the ad controls in ChatGPT settings to switch personalization off or clear ads data. OpenAI’s labels and availability can change, so consult the current in-product settings and its ads FAQ rather than relying on a fixed menu path.

OpenAI says clearing ads data means it is no longer used to show you ads. It also says deletion data may remain on its servers for up to 30 days before removal. Temporary Chats will not show ads, according to the same FAQ.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the Europe policy says
OpenAI’s Europe privacy policy describes personalized advertising, where available and enabled with consent, as using past chats and ad interactions alongside current-chat context and advertiser information. It separately describes generic ads as using more limited information, including current-chat context, location, and time of day. This is a regional policy description; it should not be treated as a universal statement about every user’s jurisdiction, consent, or settings.
