You can test a website on a new server before changing public DNS by adding a temporary entry to your computer’s hosts file. The entry maps the production hostname to the proposed server IP only on that computer, so your browser loads the new origin while everyone else continues using the current DNS record.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
After saving the entry, flush the operating system’s resolver cache, restart or clear the browser if necessary, and test the site with its real hostname. Check redirects, cookies, APIs, assets, HTTPS certificates and virtual-host routing. Remove the temporary line and flush the cache again when validation is complete.

A hosts file is a local text table that maps IP addresses to hostnames. The documented format in the Linux hosts(5) manual is IP_address canonical_hostname [aliases...]. A line such as 203.0.113.10 example.com www.example.com tells the operating system to use 203.0.113.10 whenever that computer resolves either hostname.
This is useful during a migration because the browser still requests https://example.com, but the connection is directed to the proposed server. The application therefore receives the production hostname, allowing you to exercise the same virtual host, redirects, cookies and URL-based logic that visitors will use after DNS changes.

What changes
- Only name resolution on the edited computer is changed.
- Requests for the listed hostnames go to the specified address instead of the address returned by normal DNS.
- The override can be used immediately after the file is saved, except where an operating-system component or application has cached the previous answer.
What does not change
- No DNS record is published and no authoritative nameserver is modified.
- Other computers, phones, recursive resolvers and networks continue to use public DNS.
- The entry does not prove that public DNS has propagated or that every network can reach the new server.
- A hosts entry changes address selection. It does not automatically make an arbitrary direct-IP request use the intended HTTP
Hostheader or TLS SNI name; test with the real hostname whenever possible.
Why the lookup is normally immediate
Windows DNS Client checks local cached data, including hosts-file mappings, before querying a DNS server. On Linux, the order is controlled by /etc/nsswitch.conf; when files appears before dns, a matching line in /etc/hosts ends the lookup before DNS is consulted. The Linux manual describes modifications as normally taking effect immediately, with application caching as the main exception.
Prepare the test before editing
Write down the exact names and addresses you need to validate. A migration often involves more than the apex domain, and testing only one name can hide a broken virtual host or API endpoint.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Record the proposed server’s IPv4 address. If the service will answer over IPv6, record its IPv6 address as well and plan an entry for each address.
- List every hostname that must resolve to the new origin, such as the apex name,
www, an API subdomain, a checkout host or an administrative endpoint. - Keep the production spelling, including punctuation and subdomain labels.
www.example.comandexample.comare separate hostnames. - Make a backup or copy of the existing hosts file before changing it. Preserve localhost and other entries already present.
- Ensure you have administrator or root privileges. Saving a modified copy in another folder does not affect name resolution.
- Plan a cleanup time. A forgotten line can keep sending your computer to a retired or incomplete server after the public DNS change.
Windows: edit the hosts file and flush DNS
- Open Notepad, or another plain-text editor, with Run as administrator. Without elevation, Windows may let you view the file but refuse to save changes.
- In the editor, open
C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts. The folder may appear empty because the open dialog filters for text documents; select All files so the file namedhostsis visible. - Add one line containing the target IP followed by every hostname that should use it. For example:
203.0.113.10 example.com www.example.com
Use spaces between names. You can place a comment beginning with#on its own line to record why the temporary mapping exists. - Save the file as
hosts, nothosts.txt. If the editor’s save dialog is set to a text-document type, switch it to all files and verify the final filename in the folder. - Open an elevated Command Prompt and run
ipconfig /flushdns. A successful Windows flush reports: Windows IP configuration successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache. - Open a new browser tab and use the normal production URL. If the browser still shows the old origin, restart it before investigating the server.
Do not add a protocol, path or port to the hosts file. Entries contain an IP address and names only; values such as https://example.com/ are invalid hosts-file syntax.
macOS: edit /etc/hosts and refresh the resolver
- Open Terminal and edit
/etc/hostswith administrator privileges using a terminal editor. The command must be run withsudoor the editor must be launched from an administrator session. - Add the target address and exact hostnames on one line, for example:
203.0.113.10 example.com www.example.com
Add a separate line for an IPv6 address when the site needs IPv6 testing. - Save the file without changing its name or encoding. Keep existing localhost and other system entries.
- Run
sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponderto clear the documented macOS resolver state. - Retest the production URL. If one browser continues to use the previous answer, quit and reopen that browser; application-level caches can outlive the operating-system change.
The command restarts the resolver process; it does not alter public DNS. A second computer or phone on the same network will not inherit your Mac’s hosts entry.

Linux: check lookup order, edit safely and clear caches
- Inspect the resolver order with:
grep ^hosts /etc/nsswitch.conf
Look forfilesbeforedns. That order allows a matching/etc/hostsline to take precedence. - Back up and edit
/etc/hostsas root. Add the proposed IP address and the exact hostnames, preserving localhost and all existing entries. Do not overwrite the file with a minimal replacement that removes system mappings. - If the machine uses
systemd-resolvedand an old answer persists, run:sudo resolvectl flush-caches - If it uses
nscd, restart the service or invalidate its hosts cache with:sudo nscd -i hosts - Load the real production URL in a fresh browser session and perform the application checks described below.
Linux distributions differ in which resolver services are enabled. The nsswitch.conf line tells you the lookup order, while the cache commands apply only when the corresponding service is present.
Verification: prove the new origin is serving the real site
Use every production hostname
Open the apex and www names when both exist, plus any subdomains used by the application. Test the canonical redirect in both directions where relevant. A successful page on one hostname does not establish that the other virtual host is configured.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the complete browser transaction
Do more than look for the home page. Follow a representative path through navigation, forms and authenticated areas, and confirm that the returned page, redirects, cookies, API calls and static assets come from the proposed server. A page that looks correct can still call an old API host or load images and scripts from the previous origin.
- Verify that redirects land on the intended hostname and scheme.
- Sign in or submit a test form if the migration includes sessions, then confirm cookies are set for the expected domain and path.
- Open browser developer tools and watch API and asset requests for old hostnames, mixed content or failed connections.
- Exercise any background jobs or upload paths that are part of the production workflow, using test data where appropriate.
Validate HTTPS, certificate identity and SNI
Visit the HTTPS URL by hostname and inspect the certificate. The certificate’s names must match the hostname even though the connection is temporarily going to a different IP. A certificate warning usually means the new server lacks the correct certificate or is selecting the wrong TLS virtual host; bypassing the warning would hide a migration defect.

Confirm virtual-host routing
The web server must select the intended site for the production hostname. A direct request to an IP can land on a default site because it lacks the expected name. If your testing tools support it, compare the normal hostname request with a direct-IP request that explicitly preserves the intended HTTP Host header and TLS SNI. Use the comparison to distinguish an address problem from a virtual-host configuration problem.
Test both address families when applicable
If the new service is intended to answer over IPv4 and IPv6, add and test both mappings. Validating only the IPv4 line can leave IPv6 users reaching an old server or failing altogether after the public records change.

Why one browser may still show the old server
Browser or application cache
Hosts-file edits can be correct while a browser, service worker or application keeps a cached DNS answer or response. Restart the browser first, then clear its host or DNS cache if that browser exposes such a control. Retest in a private window only as a diagnostic; it does not replace a complete cache refresh.
The entry does not match the name being requested
Check the address bar and every request in developer tools. An entry for example.com does not match www.example.com, an API subdomain or a name with a spelling error. Add each required hostname explicitly.

IPv6 is bypassing the IPv4 test
A computer may prefer an IPv6 result when both families are available. If the application needs IPv6, add the proposed IPv6 mapping. If it does not, make sure the test plan accounts for the address family your operating system is selecting rather than assuming an IPv4-only result represents every connection.
Linux lookup order or a resolver service differs
If files follows dns in /etc/nsswitch.conf, DNS can be consulted before the hosts file. Correct the order only if that matches your distribution’s intended configuration, then flush the active systemd-resolved or nscd cache.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →VPN, proxy or enterprise DNS policies
A VPN, proxy, split-DNS policy or encrypted-DNS setting can make a browser use a resolver path you did not expect. Check whether the browser is connecting through a proxy, whether the VPN is active and whether enterprise security software intercepts DNS or HTTPS. Test from a simple local connection as a comparison, without assuming that disabling a corporate control is permitted.
The new server returns the wrong site
If the connection reaches the target IP but displays a default page, verify the web server’s name-based virtual-host configuration and the application’s hostname settings. The hosts file only chooses the address; it cannot configure the server to recognize a hostname or provide the correct certificate.
Best Value
Remove the override after testing
- Open the same hosts file with administrator or root privileges.
- Delete the temporary line, or comment it out with
#while retaining it for a short, clearly documented rollback window. - Save the file without changing its name or removing unrelated entries.
- Flush or restart the applicable local resolver:
ipconfig /flushdnson Windows, sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponderon macOS, or the appropriateresolvectl/nscdcommand on Linux. - Restart the browser if it previously cached the override, then verify that the computer now follows the intended public DNS answer.
Leaving the entry in place can make this computer continue using the old test server after production DNS changes. That creates a particularly confusing failure: the public site is correct while the machine used for administration silently visits a different origin.
Why this does not test public DNS propagation
Recursive DNS servers cache records according to their TTL. A hosts-file test bypasses that public cache on one machine, so it gives immediate feedback about the new origin but says nothing about what another network will resolve.
After changing the authoritative DNS record, check the result from more than one public resolver and more than one network. cPanel documentation warns that DNS changes may require 48 hours or more to reach all nameservers on the internet. That is a documented possible interval, not a promise that every change takes exactly two days; resolver cache state, TTLs and provider behavior determine when individual users converge.
Choosing a validation method
| Method | Scope | Timing | What it proves | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hosts-file override | One edited computer | Immediate after local caches are cleared | Full browser and application behavior against the proposed origin | Temporary local edit with straightforward rollback |
| Public propagation checker | Many external resolver vantage points | TTL-dependent public convergence | What selected public resolvers currently return | Observes DNS only; it does not exercise the complete application |
| Authoritative DNS change | Everyone using affected public DNS | Gradual convergence governed by recursive caches and TTL | Real-world delivery after the record is changed | Changes production traffic and is harder to roll back safely |
Use the hosts file when you need a controlled, high-fidelity pre-cutover test. Use external resolver checks after the real change to measure public convergence. Neither method replaces the other: one validates the origin and application immediately, while the other observes DNS behavior outside your computer.
Quick Recap
A practical pre-cutover checklist
- Target IP confirmed, including IPv6 when required.
- Apex,
wwwand application subdomains listed explicitly. - Hosts file backed up; localhost and existing entries preserved.
- Temporary mappings saved with the correct filename and syntax.
- Operating-system resolver cache flushed.
- Browser restarted or its host cache cleared if it retained the old answer.
- HTTP redirects, HTTPS certificate, cookies, APIs and assets tested.
- Virtual-host routing checked with the real hostname.
- VPN, proxy, split-DNS and encrypted-DNS effects considered.
- Temporary lines removed and caches refreshed after validation.
- Public DNS checked from multiple networks after the authoritative change.
