The direct answer: official BDS is not a plugin server
A standard Bedrock Dedicated Server is designed to run Bedrock worlds with Microsoft’s own server software. Its documented customization surfaces are data-driven packs, JavaScript modules and configuration files. It does not document a general-purpose plugin loader comparable to the one used by Bukkit-derived Java servers.

That distinction matters because the word plugin is used loosely in Minecraft discussions. A behavior pack can change entities, recipes, loot, components and other data-driven content, but it is not a PHP, Python or Java plugin. A script can respond to events and call game APIs, but it is not automatically compatible with a Bukkit API. A server fork may advertise “Bedrock plugins” while using an entirely different implementation from official BDS.
Consequently, the answer depends on what you mean by a Bedrock server:

What you can use on official Bedrock Dedicated Server
Behavior packs for data-driven gameplay
Behavior packs are the normal official way to alter gameplay data in a Bedrock world. They can define or modify supported entities, items, recipes, loot tables, functions and other data-driven systems. They are packaged as Bedrock content rather than server-side Java archives.
A behavior pack changes the world’s content rules; it does not provide the broad, server-framework API associated with a Bukkit plugin. That difference affects how you design features such as permissions, minigame logic, economy systems or administration tools. If the required operation is represented by a documented component or event, a pack may be sufficient. If it requires access outside the exposed data model, the pack alone cannot provide it.

Resource packs for presentation
Resource packs supply client-facing assets such as textures, models, sounds and other presentation data. They are commonly paired with behavior packs when a gameplay change needs a matching visual or audio component. Resource packs do not create a plugin runtime and cannot substitute for server logic.
JavaScript Script API modules
Microsoft documents JavaScript APIs for Bedrock scripting. The listed modules include @minecraft/server, @minecraft/server-ui, @minecraft/server-admin, @minecraft/server-editor and GameTest-related modules. These APIs can expose events, world operations, user interfaces and administrative functions that are not available through packs alone.
Script projects must target the module versions and permissions supported by the Minecraft release running your server. The available surface is version-sensitive, so an update can require manifest changes or code changes. Scripts are therefore closer to an official add-on programming model than to a drop-in plugin ecosystem.
Configuration files are not plugins
server.properties, allowlists, port settings and world options control how BDS operates. They are useful for access control, networking and world selection, but they do not load third-party code. Changing a property cannot make a Bukkit .jar compatible with Bedrock.

Why a Bukkit or Spigot plugin cannot be copied to BDS
Bukkit-family plugins are compiled against Java server APIs. They expect a Java runtime, a Bukkit-compatible event system, Java edition objects and a plugin manager that reads plugin metadata. Official BDS uses a different server implementation and does not provide that manager or API contract.
For that reason, copying a plugin into a folder, renaming the file or adding a configuration entry does not create compatibility. At best, BDS ignores the file; at worst, an administrator mistakes a failed load for a damaged world or an unrelated server error. A Java plugin must run on a Java server platform that implements its expected API.
Search results and download pages also use “Bedrock plugin” as shorthand for several incompatible things. The label may describe a PocketMine-MP plugin, an Endstone plugin, a Nukkit-derived project, a Java server accepting Bedrock players, or an add-on/script package. Check the target software and API before installing anything.
How Bedrock scripting differs from a traditional plugin ecosystem
Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server scripting documentation explicitly describes JavaScript APIs, including additional, more powerful experimental APIs. “Experimental” is operationally important: Microsoft warns that those interfaces can change or be removed. A script that works on one Minecraft release may need updates after a server upgrade.

A script design that is valid for a self-hosted BDS instance should not be presented as a guaranteed Realms solution. Hosting model, permissions and deployment controls differ.

- Record the Minecraft and Script API versions used by the world.
- Test scripts in a copy of the world before updating the production server.
- Keep behavior packs, resource packs and scripts in versioned backups.
- Read the release notes for module changes and deprecated APIs.
- Have a rollback plan that restores both the server binary and the world content.
This approach does not turn Script API into Bukkit. It acknowledges that official Bedrock extensibility is supported, but its compatibility contract is narrower and more release-sensitive than the mature Java plugin model.

Choose the row that matches the feature you need, not the label used by a download page. “Bedrock support” can mean native Bedrock software, a server fork, or a bridge between editions.
PocketMine-MP: genuine Bedrock plugins, different server behavior
How its plugin model works
PocketMine-MP is PHP server software for Bedrock with a documented plugin API. Plugins are commonly distributed as .phar files and loaded from the server’s plugins directory. Poggit is the documented release source for many PocketMine plugins.
Each plugin declares its API compatibility in plugin.yml. When the declared API is incompatible with the server, PocketMine refuses the plugin instead of silently pretending that it loaded. That check makes the API version a required part of your upgrade plan.
The vanilla-parity trade-off
PocketMine’s own documentation warns that it is not vanilla server software. Important Bedrock behavior is missing or differs, including vanilla world generation, redstone and mob AI. A plugin-rich PocketMine server can therefore be the wrong choice for a survival world that depends on exact vanilla mechanics.
Evaluate a move by testing the actual world and gameplay systems your players use. Verify generation, redstone contraptions, farms, entity behavior, commands and world conversion before committing. A plugin API solves extensibility; it does not guarantee that every vanilla mechanic is reproduced.

When PocketMine is the sensible choice
Use PocketMine when PHP plugins and a plugin-oriented administration model matter more than strict vanilla fidelity. Confirm the server’s current API and the plugin’s declared API before installation. The PocketMine documentation result identified release 5.44.4, but that number is release-sensitive and should be checked again before deployment.

Endstone is third-party BDS-based server software with Python and C++ plugin APIs. Its documentation describes a Bukkit/Paper-like API and provides pip and Docker installation options. The project’s rationale is that official add-on and script APIs cannot always modify core gameplay deeply enough for server owners who want framework-level plugins.
Endstone is not an official Microsoft BDS plugin loader. Treat it as an independent platform with its own release cadence, supported Minecraft versions and API compatibility. Before using it for production, check:
- Which Minecraft version the current Endstone release supports.
- Which Endstone API version your plugin targets.
- Whether the plugin is maintained for that combination.
- How worlds, permissions and existing packs are handled during migration.
- How quickly the project typically follows a Minecraft update.
Endstone can be attractive when you want a BDS-based core and prefer Python or C++ over JavaScript. Its active development also means that documentation and compatibility expectations can change faster than those of a long-established Java server ecosystem.
Geyser: use Java plugins while Bedrock players connect
Geyser describes itself as a bridge between Minecraft: Bedrock Edition and Minecraft: Java Edition. In the common setup, a Java server such as Paper or Spigot runs the plugins, and Geyser translates connections so Bedrock clients can join. This is not a way to install Java plugins inside official BDS.
What this architecture provides
You gain access to the large Java plugin ecosystem, while players on Bedrock devices can connect through the bridge. Geyser also has mod and standalone distributions, so the exact deployment depends on your server architecture. Floodgate can allow Bedrock players to connect without a paid Java account, subject to the current Geyser documentation and the server’s authentication configuration.
What you must manage
There are two editions and an interoperability layer to keep compatible. Java plugins see Java-side players and mechanics, while Bedrock clients use translated packets and controls. Features that depend on edition-specific behavior, interfaces or resource packs may need testing. Keep the Java server, Geyser build and any authentication component aligned with the Minecraft versions you support.

A practical decision process for a new server
- Define the non-negotiable feature. Decide whether you need a specific Java plugin, PHP plugins, Python/C++ hooks, or only custom Bedrock content.
- Protect the gameplay requirement. If exact vanilla generation, redstone or mob behavior is essential, test any alternative implementation before migration.
- Identify the runtime. Confirm whether the package targets official BDS, PocketMine-MP, Endstone, a Java server, or a bridge.
- Check version declarations. Match Minecraft, server software, Script API or plugin API versions. Do not assume that a plugin made for one release remains valid after an update.
- Build a staging copy. Use a backup world and test login, permissions, commands, packs, scripts, redstone, entities and save/restart behavior.
- Plan updates and rollback. Keep the server binary, configuration, packs, scripts and plugins backed up together so you can revert a failed upgrade.
Common misconceptions and failure symptoms
“I made a plugins folder, but nothing loads.”
Official BDS does not document a Bukkit-style loader, so the folder itself has no special meaning. Use a supported behavior pack or script, or move to software that implements the plugin API your package requires.
“The download says Bedrock plugin.”
Read the requirements rather than the headline. A .phar file with plugin.yml points toward PocketMine-style software; a Java .jar points toward a Java server; a Python or C++ package may target Endstone. None of those formats is automatically usable by official BDS.
“My script broke after a Minecraft update.”
Check the module version, manifest permissions and API changes first. Additional Script APIs are experimental, so compatibility can change between releases. Restore the tested server and world backup if the update affects production.
“Geyser should let BDS run Java plugins.”
Geyser translates clients between editions; it does not add a Java plugin manager to BDS. The Java server remains the plugin host.
Bottom line for 2026
Official Bedrock Dedicated Server supports packs, JavaScript Script APIs and operational configuration, not traditional Bukkit/Paper plugins. For plugin-driven Bedrock hosting, PocketMine-MP offers PHP plugins with a documented API but sacrifices some vanilla behavior. Endstone offers Python and C++ APIs on BDS-based third-party software and requires careful version checking. If the priority is the mature Java plugin ecosystem, run a Java server and let Bedrock players connect through Geyser. The correct choice is the one whose runtime, API contract and gameplay behavior match your server’s actual requirements.
