Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf a car subwoofer is silent, weak, distorted, or intermittent, test it in stages before replacing anything: inspect the wiring and driver, measure the disconnected driver’s voice-coil resistance with a multimeter, then check the amplifier and signal path. A normal resistance reading can help rule out some faults, but it does not prove the whole audio system works.
Start with the system powered off
Turn the audio system off before touching speaker wiring. Check for loose terminals, stray wire strands, pinched or damaged cable, and loose enclosure connections. Look at the cone and surround for visible damage. No bass by itself does not establish that the subwoofer is blown: wiring, amplifier power, grounding, signal, or protection faults can produce similar symptoms.

Check the driver mechanically
With the driver disconnected, inspect the cone and surround. If you check cone movement, press gently and evenly, then stop if it binds or scrapes. Do not force it. Klipsch’s general passive woofer troubleshooting notes that a cone that cannot move may be seized or frozen; this is a screening observation, not a definitive diagnosis for every car subwoofer. A digital multimeter with resistance (ohms) and continuity modes is useful for these checks. For resistance testing, the driver must be isolated from the amplifier and other circuit paths. Never measure resistance on a driver that is still connected to the amplifier.

- Disconnect the speaker leads. Turn off the system and remove both speaker wires from the amplifier or otherwise isolate the subwoofer from the circuit.
- Select resistance mode. Set the meter to ohms and make sure the probes are making clean contact with the terminals.
- Measure each voice coil. On a single-voice-coil driver, measure across its two terminals. On a dual-voice-coil driver, measure each coil separately.
- Check the enclosure wiring if needed. If the subwoofer has multiple coils or drivers, measure at the enclosure terminals too, but interpret that reading using the actual wiring diagram.
- Compare with the exact documentation. Check the driver’s manual and wiring diagram. A nominal impedance label, a coil’s DC resistance, and a multi-coil enclosure’s terminal reading are different values and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Manufacturer installation and wiring guides recommend checking DC resistance before connecting a subwoofer to an amplifier, including to verify coil and multi-sub wiring. See the Kicker subwoofer installation guide and Rockville’s subwoofer wiring guide.
What the reading can—and cannot—tell you
An open reading, a reading near zero, or a substantial mismatch between nominally matching coils can indicate a coil or wiring problem. First confirm probe contact and that the driver is isolated, then compare the result with the exact model’s specifications. A meter reading alone does not prove the driver is defective, and there is no single resistance figure that means every subwoofer is healthy.

Use continuity mode for isolated wiring
Continuity mode can help check an isolated speaker-wire path for a break. Disconnect the wire from the amplifier and driver before testing it, and follow the meter’s instructions. Continuity testing does not establish whether the amplifier or audio signal is working.
If the driver checks out, troubleshoot the rest of the system
A normal coil reading shifts attention to the rest of the signal and power path; it does not clear those components. Use the owner’s manual for the exact amplifier model and check:

- Overheating or another condition identified in the amplifier’s troubleshooting section.
For example, the Rockville RD1000.1 owner’s manual discusses short-circuit protection, power/ground/remote wiring, low or incompatible speaker load, and overheating. Its specific voltage guidance applies to that model; use the manual for your own amplifier rather than applying another model’s values.
Use a test tone only for the right job
A test tone is for an appropriate system setup check, such as amplifier gain setting; it does not measure voice-coil resistance. MTX instructs users to set EQ, tone controls, bass boost, and crossover settings flat before gain-setting with a tone, and identifies 50 Hz tones for subwoofer amplifier gain setting. Follow the instructions for your own head unit and amplifier, keep playback controlled, and stop if the subwoofer distorts, knocks, or the amplifier enters protection. There is no universal safe playback duration or volume established for all systems. MTX’s amplifier gain-setting instructions.
Choose a multimeter for basic checks
If you need a meter for this job, look for a digital multimeter with an ohms setting and continuity mode. Make sure its display is readable, the probes can reach the terminals, and its instructions explain the relevant measurements. The available guidance supports those functions, not a particular brand or model ranking. A meter can help isolate electrical faults, but the exact subwoofer and amplifier documentation determines how to interpret readings and loads.
