Read the model number on the console itself before you trust a listing title. PlayStation 5 systems use a code beginning CFI; PlayStation 4 systems use CUH. That code identifies the hardware family more reliably than a seller’s words such as “slim,” “Pro” or “digital.” Then check the built-in disc drive, storage, region, included accessories and the condition of the exact unit pictured.
Start with the physical model number
Marketplace names are often incomplete. A listing can say only “PS5,” use a stock photograph or call a console “Slim” without showing which revision is included. The model label is your first verification point because it is printed on the hardware or its original packaging.

Do not rely on the product title, box color or a seller’s shorthand when two offers have different prices. “PS5 Digital,” “PS5 Slim” and “PS5 Pro” describe broad configurations, but the complete code tells you which family Sony assigned to that unit. The final letter and regional suffix can matter when you compare manuals, accessories and bundles, so copy every character exactly.

Find a PS5 model number
Sony says a PS5 model number consists of the letters CFI, followed by numbers and a trailing letter. With the console standing vertically, the label is on the bottom. Remove the base if it hides the label. Sony’s support wording is exact: “The model number consists of the letters CFI, followed by a series of numbers and a letter.” Sony’s PS5 model-number guide shows the label location.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
If the console is switched on, you can view its serial number at Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. The serial number is useful for support, but it is not a substitute for a photograph of the physical CFI model number when you are buying. Ask a seller to show the model label, not to publish a complete serial number publicly. A close-up can obscure most of the serial while leaving the CFI code readable.
Ask for two images rather than one: a full-console photograph to establish which unit is being offered, and a sharp label photograph in which every CFI character is legible. Glare, a protective skin or the vertical stand can hide part of the label. If the seller sends only a cropped box image, request a picture of the console itself.
Find a PS4 model number
PS4 codes begin with CUH, followed by four numbers and a letter. Sony describes the format as: “The model number consists of the letters CUH, followed by four numbers and a letter.” The label location depends on the family:

| CUH-20xx | Spine to the right of the power port | Family commonly sold as PS4 Slim |
| CUH-70xx | Spine above the system ports | PS4 Pro family in Sony’s guide |
The official PS4 support page gives these locations and groupings. The letters after the family digits vary by market, so the family is a useful first clue, not a complete regional SKU decoder.
On a used PS4, dust or a replacement shell can make the shape misleading. Read the CUH label instead of trying to identify a Slim or Pro from the finish alone. If the label is damaged, compare the code on the original box, then ask the seller to explain why the console and packaging do not match.
Identify the PS5 generation and configuration
Do not infer a PS5 revision from its shape alone. Compare the complete CFI code with the seller’s description and the actual side panels. The broad groups below are a practical way to organize a listing, not a substitute for checking the full regional code.
CFI-1000: original PS5 family
CFI-1000 codes identify the first PS5 hardware family. A disc version has a built-in optical drive; a Digital Edition does not. Do not assume that an original CFI-1000 Digital Edition can accept the later detachable drive sold for newer systems. Sony’s stated compatibility for that accessory excludes the original digital group.
For a CFI-1000 listing, ask whether the package is the disc or Digital Edition before comparing it with a newer slim offer. A digital console may have the same game performance within its family but lacks the physical drive unless Sony specifically lists an approved accessory for that model. A photograph of the front edge should show whether the optical-drive slot is present.

CFI-2000: PS5 slim family
Sony’s setup guidance identifies CFI-2000 as the PS5 slim model group. Slim consoles use a smaller enclosure than the launch design. Depending on the exact product, the optical drive may be built in or absent. Read the full label and confirm whether the side panel contains a drive bulge or a removable panel intended for a separate drive.
Do not assume every CFI-2000 package contains the same stand, drive or storage capacity. The seller should state whether the vertical stand is included, whether a detachable drive is already installed and which cables and controller are in the box. Those are package details, not conclusions you can draw from “slim.”
CFI-2100: a current slim listing example
Sony’s US Direct catalog currently identifies a standard PS5 product as CFI-2100 slim and describes that product as having a disc drive. This is a United States product-page description, not a guarantee that every country uses the same suffix, bundle or storage capacity. Match the region and the exact CFI suffix before treating a listing as equivalent.
Recommended Free Tools
A CFI-2100 reference is especially useful when a seller uses an older stock image. Request a picture of the label and compare it with the current product page for your market. If the listing says Digital Edition but the photographed unit has a built-in drive, or says disc model while the drive opening is absent, stop and resolve the contradiction in writing.
CFI-7000: PS5 Pro family
Sony’s setup material identifies CFI-7000 as the PS5 Pro model group. A Pro listing still needs a separate check for disc hardware: do not assume that every Pro package includes an optical drive. Look at the configuration stated by the seller and ask for a photograph of the console’s side and the contents of the box.
Because the Pro family can be sold with or without the compatible detachable drive, compare the total package rather than the console name. A listing that includes a drive should identify it as included hardware; a listing that omits it should not be described as disc-ready without confirming that the CFI-ZDD1 accessory is supported and available in your market.
Sony’s PS5 setup instructions explain the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 group names. Sony’s US Direct catalog lists standard, Digital Edition and Pro products, but regional suffixes and bundles can differ.

“Digital Edition” alone is not enough information. Sony specifies the CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive for the PS5 Pro group and for PS5 Digital Edition consoles in the slim CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 groups. Initial pairing requires an internet connection.

| Original CFI-1000 Digital Edition | Not established as compatible by Sony’s cited specification | Do not buy the add-on on the assumption that it fits |
Check the compatibility statement on Sony’s Disc Drive for PS5 Digital Edition Consoles page before ordering. The drive’s product page and the PS5 console listing describe specific product groups; they do not make every digital PS5 interchangeable.
Pairing is another practical requirement. Even when the hardware fits, Sony says an internet connection is needed for the initial pairing process. If you are buying a used drive separately, ask whether it has been removed from another console and whether the seller can confirm it is the correct CFI-ZDD1 unit. Do not confuse a generic external USB disc drive with Sony’s approved add-on; the compatibility statement applies to the specified accessory.
Use a listing-comparison checklist
When two offers both say “PS5” or “PS4,” compare the same facts in the same order. A seller who cannot provide the model label should not receive the same confidence as one who photographs it clearly.
- Exact model number: Record every character, including the trailing letter. For PS5, it must begin CFI; for PS4, CUH.
- Family and generation: Classify the code as the relevant PS5 or PS4 family before considering cosmetic descriptions.
- Disc configuration: Establish whether a drive is built in, missing, or supported as a separately purchased accessory.
- Storage: Compare the stated capacity and ask whether it is the factory specification or a replacement drive. Storage figures are meaningful only when attached to the exact model and region.
- Included hardware: Confirm the controller count, power cable, HDMI cable, vertical stand, detachable drive and any game bundle. Do not assume that a photograph proves every pictured item is included.
- Region: Match the seller’s market with the official product or manual page. Suffixes, packaging and bundle contents can vary between countries.
- Condition and proof: Ask whether the photograph shows the exact unit, and request close-ups of ports, seals, panels and the model label.
- Warranty and returns: Treat these as seller terms, not facts implied by the CFI or CUH code.
| Question to ask | Evidence that answers it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Which hardware revision is this? | Clear label showing the full CFI or CUH code | Prevents a generic “PS5” or “PS4” title from hiding a different family |
| Does it play discs? | Photo of the optical-drive opening or an explicit configuration statement | Digital and disc versions can share the same family name |
| Can I add a drive later? | Compatibility with the exact CFI group, not merely the words “Digital Edition” | The CFI-ZDD1 specification is limited to stated slim and Pro groups |
| What arrives in the box? | Written inventory tied to the photographed bundle | Stands, cables, controllers and games vary by package |
| Is this the actual console? | New photographs of the label and exterior, ideally with a dated seller note | Stock images cannot prove condition or included hardware |
Check a PS5 in person or from photographs
In-person procedure
- Turn the console off and disconnect it safely if the seller permits inspection.
- Position it vertically and remove the base if necessary to expose the underside label.
- Read the complete CFI code and photograph it for your records.
- Inspect both side panels and the front edge for a built-in optical drive or a removable panel.
- Compare the code with the appropriate Sony setup or accessory page for your region.
- Open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information only if you need support details; do not treat the displayed serial number as the model code.
- Check that the controller, cables, stand and any advertised drive are physically present.
Do not remove panels or a drive from a powered console just to inspect it. A visual check of the drive opening and label is normally sufficient. If the seller will not allow a label view, treat that refusal as a purchasing risk rather than trying to identify the unit from its silhouette.
Remote-buying procedure
- Ask for one image showing the entire console and another close-up of the label.
- Request a second photograph showing the front or side where the disc-drive opening would be.
- Ask the seller to type the full model number in the message, preserving every digit and letter.
- Compare that number with Sony’s model-family guidance and the exact regional product page.
- Have the seller list every included item and state whether storage or other parts were replaced.
- Keep the listing, photographs and messages until the return period ends.
If the seller says the label is hidden by a stand, ask for a photograph after safely removing the stand. If the seller claims the unit is new but cannot show the box label or console label, ask which exact product page supports the claim. A screenshot of a product page proves what Sony sells, not what is inside a marketplace shipment.
How to read PS4 families without overclaiming
The CUH family digits are enough to separate the broad hardware groups, but not enough to prove every detail of a used console. CUH-10xx, CUH-11xx and CUH-12xx indicate the earlier PS4 family revisions. CUH-20xx is the group commonly marketed as Slim. CUH-70xx is Sony’s PS4 Pro family in the cited support guide.
Use the suffix to locate the precise regional product documentation, not to invent a specification. Two consoles in the same broad family can differ in market, storage, bundle and warranty. A CUH code also cannot tell you whether a used system has been repaired, modified or damaged.

Ask for the model label and a written inventory instead of treating family membership as a complete specification sheet.

Common identification mistakes
Relying on the silhouette
Case shape is a useful prompt to inspect the label, not proof of identity. Panels, stands and drive covers can be replaced, and product photographs may show a different revision from the one shipped.
Confusing serial and model numbers
The serial number identifies an individual unit. The CFI or CUH model number identifies its hardware family. A seller can provide a serial number and still fail to establish which revision you are buying.
Assuming “digital” means the same accessory fit
Only the specified slim CFI-2000, slim CFI-2100 and Pro groups are listed for the CFI-ZDD1 drive. Treat an unqualified “Digital Edition” claim as incomplete until the model group is visible.

Family digits do not authenticate storage, region, condition, warranty or bundle contents. Those claims require the listing text, photographs and seller confirmation.
Accepting a stock photograph
Official images explain what a product should look like; they do not prove that a marketplace seller owns that exact unit. Ask for a label photograph and a current exterior photograph before paying.
Assuming a drive is included because the console supports one
Compatibility and inclusion are different questions. A CFI-2000 Digital Edition may support the CFI-ZDD1, but the drive can still be sold separately. For a Pro, ask whether the drive is in the box, already attached or omitted from the package.
Publishing a full serial number
The serial can help with support, but it is unnecessary for comparing listings and exposes an individual unit identifier. Request a readable model code while allowing the seller to obscure most of the serial number in public photographs.
What official pages can and cannot prove
Sony’s support pages establish the CFI and CUH formats, label locations and major family distinctions. Sony’s setup and accessory pages establish the cited PS5 model groups and CFI-ZDD1 compatibility. They do not authenticate an individual marketplace seller, confirm a used console’s condition, guarantee inventory, or establish a particular bundle in every country.

For a final check, open the official page for the market where you are buying and compare the complete model number, not just the first four digits. Sony’s accessory index is available at PlayStation accessories; use it to locate the current regional documentation rather than assuming that a product page from another country has identical packaging.
Official pages also cannot tell you whether a used console has hidden liquid damage, a failing fan, an intermittent HDMI port or a replaced storage drive. Those issues require inspection, testing and seller documentation. Keep the hardware-identification check separate from the condition check so a correct model number does not create false confidence about a second-hand unit.
A practical decision rule
- Buy with confidence: the full CFI or CUH code is visible, the disc configuration is explicit, the included hardware is listed and the photos show the exact unit.
- Ask more questions: the listing uses “Slim,” “Pro” or “Digital” without a model-label photo, or the storage and bundle are unclear.
- Pause the purchase: the seller refuses to show the label, the model number conflicts with the description, or a promised disc-drive upgrade is not compatible with the exact CFI group.
The reliable sequence is simple: read the label, classify the family, verify disc hardware, reconcile the bundle and region, then assess the seller’s condition and warranty claims. That process turns a vague “PS5” or “PS4” listing into a specific product you can compare honestly.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which PlayStation model I am buying?
Read the physical model label. PS5 consoles use a CFI code and PS4 consoles use a CUH code. Record the complete number, including its trailing letter, then compare it with Sony’s regional product or support page. Confirm the disc configuration, storage, bundle contents, condition and warranty separately.
How can I tell if a PS5 is Slim or the original model?
Check the CFI family on the label. Sony identifies CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 groups as slim listings, while CFI-1000 is the original family. Shape alone is not conclusive, and the exact suffix and disc configuration still need verification.
How do I identify a PS4 Slim or PS4 Pro?
A CUH-20xx code is the family commonly sold as PS4 Slim. Sony’s guide identifies CUH-70xx as the PS4 Pro family. CUH-10xx, CUH-11xx and CUH-12xx are earlier PS4 revisions. Check the complete regional code and the actual console rather than relying on a seller’s title.
Can I add a disc drive to any PS5 Digital Edition?
No. Sony specifies the CFI-ZDD1 drive for PS5 Pro and slim PS5 Digital Edition groups CFI-2000 and CFI-2100. Compatibility is not established for the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition. Initial pairing also requires an internet connection.
Is the serial number the same as the model number?
No. The serial number identifies one individual console and appears in Settings > System > System Software > Console Information when the system is running. The CFI or CUH model number identifies the hardware family. Ask for the model code and avoid sharing a full serial number publicly.
What should I ask a marketplace seller before paying?
Request a clear photograph of the console label, the full model number in writing, a front or side photograph showing the disc-drive configuration, a list of every included item, the stated storage, the region, the console’s condition and the applicable return or warranty terms. Confirm that the photographs show the exact unit.
The Bottom Line
Use the label, not the listing headline. CFI identifies PS5 families, CUH identifies PS4 families, and the complete code determines which generation and accessories you should compare. Verify the disc hardware, regional suffix, storage, bundle and condition before you pay.
