Ubuntu Server is the best general-purpose starting point for most old laptops. It provides a minimalist base for file sharing, web hosting and other services, and its documented requirements are modest. Choose openmediavault instead when the laptop’s main job is network-attached storage (NAS). Choose TrueNAS SCALE 25.10 only when the machine can satisfy its storage-focused recommendations, including 8 GB of memory, an SSD boot device and two same-sized data devices for a pool.
The right choice depends less on the laptop’s age than on its architecture, memory, storage layout, ports and intended workload. A single-drive laptop used for a few services is a different project from a storage server expected to manage a redundant pool.

Quick answer: which operating system fits your project?
Use this decision rule before downloading anything:
- Pick Ubuntu Server for a flexible server that may run several unrelated services and that you are comfortable administering from a terminal.
- Pick openmediavault when shared files, disks and a NAS-style management interface are the central purpose, especially if you plan to attach storage over USB.
- Pick TrueNAS SCALE 25.10 when storage management is the primary objective and your laptop can provide the hardware layout TrueNAS recommends.
- Consider Debian if you already know that ecosystem and can independently verify the current installer and release requirements. The available official material for this comparison does not establish current Debian version-specific figures.
There is no universal winner. The operating system must match the work, the number of usable drives and the way you want to manage the machine.

Comparison at a glance
| Operating system | Best fit | Published hardware information | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS | General services: file sharing, web hosting and other server applications | For amd64 installation, Canonical lists 1.5 GB minimum RAM and 5 GB minimum storage; 3 GB RAM and 25 GB or more are suggested. Actual needs vary by workload. | You manage the services and storage configuration yourself; the installation figures are not a promise that every workload will be comfortable. |
| openmediavault | NAS-oriented file sharing and storage administration | Runs on Debian GNU/Linux and documents USB among supported drive interfaces. | Drive support and behavior still depend on the underlying laptop, Debian support and the exact storage arrangement. |
| TrueNAS SCALE 25.10 | Storage-first systems that need a managed pool | TrueNAS recommends a 2-core x86-64 processor, 8 GB memory, a 16 GB SSD boot device and two identically sized devices for one storage pool. | Many laptops do not have two internal data devices or a separate SSD boot device. A USB arrangement must be evaluated for the intended workload and backup plan. |
Check the laptop before choosing an operating system
Do not install first and discover the limitations later. Record the following details from the laptop’s firmware, existing operating system or a live USB session.
Processor architecture
Confirm whether the machine is x86-64 (also called amd64), another x86 variant or an ARM system. The Ubuntu figures above apply specifically to the 24.04 LTS amd64 installation. TrueNAS’s published recommendation specifies a 2-core x86-64 processor. An operating system image built for the wrong architecture will not install, regardless of how much memory the laptop has.
Memory
Write down installed RAM and whether it can be upgraded. Ubuntu’s documented minimum is 1.5 GB for the amd64 installer, with 3 GB or more suggested. That is an installation guideline, not a target for a server running databases, containers or several simultaneous services. TrueNAS recommends 8 GB, so a 4 GB laptop should not be treated as meeting that recommendation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Internal drives and boot space
Count the internal drives, their capacities and their interfaces. A laptop with one internal drive has a very different storage design from a machine with two drive bays. TrueNAS recommends a 16 GB SSD boot device and two identically sized devices for one storage pool. Do not assume that a single internal disk plus an arbitrary USB disk is equivalent to that recommended layout.
Ports and external storage
List available USB ports and their versions, and decide whether an external hard drive can be connected without hubs or adapters that you cannot reliably power. openmediavault documentation includes USB drive interfaces, making it a candidate for a laptop whose storage expansion is external. The documentation does not guarantee that every laptop, enclosure or controller combination will behave identically.
Networking
Check whether the laptop has Ethernet, Wi-Fi or both, and verify that the installer and the chosen operating system recognize the adapter. A server that provides shared files should be tested from the computers that will actually use it. If you intend to rely on Wi-Fi, test reconnection after a reboot and after the lid is closed; laptop-specific behavior is not established by the platform documentation summarized here.

Power, battery and lid behavior
Inspect the battery, charger and cooling system. A failing battery can make an otherwise useful laptop unreliable during brief power interruptions. Also verify what happens when the lid closes and whether the machine can run continuously without overheating. There is no universal energy-use figure for this setup, so measure your own configuration if electricity cost matters.
Ubuntu Server: the flexible default
Ubuntu Server is the strongest default when “home server” means several possible jobs rather than a dedicated NAS. Canonical describes it as a minimalist base for applications such as file and print services and web hosting. You can install only the services you need and add others later, rather than committing the laptop to a storage appliance design.
When Ubuntu is the right choice
- You want one machine to host a file share plus a web application, development tools or other services.
- You are willing to administer users, permissions, updates and services directly.
- The laptop has limited storage and you do not need a managed multi-device pool.
- You want the broadest choice of server software available for a conventional Linux environment.
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS installation figures
Canonical’s current amd64 system-requirements page lists 1.5 GB RAM and 5 GB storage as minimums. It suggests 3 GB RAM and at least 25 GB storage. The same guidance warns that actual requirements depend on the scenario. Treat the minimum as an installer floor: a service stack with indexing, media processing or multiple applications can need considerably more headroom.
Practical Ubuntu installation sequence
- Back up the laptop. Installing to the internal disk can erase its existing operating system and files. Copy anything important to separate storage before changing partitions.
- Prepare installation media. Use the official Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS amd64 image when the processor is x86-64. Create a bootable USB installer and keep a second copy of important data; the installer USB is not a backup.
- Test the live boot path. Enter the laptop’s boot menu, start the installer and confirm that the keyboard, storage device and network adapter are detected.
- Choose the system disk deliberately. Select the internal drive or another device intended for the operating system. Do not select an external data disk that already contains files.
- Create an administrator account and enable remote administration only as needed. Record the account details securely. If you enable SSH, restrict access to your home network and use strong authentication.
- Finish installation and update the system. Reboot without the installer USB, connect to the network and apply available updates before adding services.
- Add one service at a time. Test file permissions, network access and restart behavior after each addition. This makes a faulty service easier to identify and remove.
Ubuntu trade-offs
Ubuntu gives you control, but that control creates administrative work. You are responsible for deciding how disks are mounted, how shares are exported, how updates are scheduled and how backups are verified. Its low published installation requirements make it accessible to old hardware, not automatically suitable for every workload.
openmediavault: the focused NAS option
openmediavault is software that runs on Debian GNU/Linux and is aimed at network-attached storage. Its documentation lists USB among supported drive interfaces, which is relevant when a laptop has only one internal drive but can connect external disks.
Choose openmediavault when storage is the main job
- Your primary requirement is shared folders for computers on the home network.
- You prefer a NAS-oriented management interface over assembling every component manually.
- You expect to manage external USB storage and have checked that the laptop’s ports and enclosures suit the plan.
- You want a Debian-based foundation but a workflow centered on disks, shares and storage services.
What to verify before installing
Confirm which disk will hold the operating system and which disks will hold shared data. Make a written map of device names and capacities before formatting anything. USB support in the documentation means the interface is supported; it does not make an individual enclosure, cable, hub or power supply reliable by itself.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
External-drive planning
An external USB hard drive can expand capacity for shared files, but one drive is still one failure point. Keep a separate backup that is disconnected or otherwise protected from accidental deletion and ransomware. If the laptop has only one internal drive, decide whether you can tolerate downtime while replacing it and whether the external arrangement meets your recovery expectations.
openmediavault trade-offs
openmediavault narrows the interface around NAS work, which can simplify routine storage administration. It is not evidence that every possible server application will be as convenient as on a general-purpose Ubuntu installation. Its behavior also inherits the hardware and driver support of the underlying Debian-based system.
TrueNAS SCALE 25.10: for storage-first builds
TrueNAS SCALE is the most structured choice in this comparison, but its hardware guidance makes it the least forgiving option for an arbitrary old laptop. The TrueNAS 25.10 hardware guide recommends a 2-core x86-64 processor, 8 GB of memory, a 16 GB SSD boot device and two identically sized devices for one storage pool.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When TrueNAS makes sense
- The machine is primarily a storage server rather than a general application host.
- You can provide the recommended memory and a dedicated SSD boot device.
- You have two same-sized data devices suitable for the pool design you intend to use.
- You have considered how the laptop will connect those devices and how you will back up the resulting data.
Why laptops can be a difficult fit
Many laptops have one internal drive bay, limited upgrade options and no provision for a second internal data device. TrueNAS discourages using a USB stick as the boot device, and the recommendation for two same-sized pool devices can conflict with that hardware layout. An external-drive arrangement may be possible, but it should be assessed for your workload rather than presented as equivalent to a validated redundant design.
Use the recommendations as a go/no-go check
- Verify that the processor is 2-core x86-64 or better.
- Confirm that the laptop has 8 GB RAM or can be upgraded to it.
- Reserve a 16 GB or larger SSD for booting, following the platform’s guidance rather than substituting a USB flash drive.
- Identify two identically sized devices for the planned pool.
- Confirm that the laptop’s controllers, bays or external connections can keep those devices available during normal operation.
- Design a separate backup before storing irreplaceable files on the pool.
TrueNAS trade-offs
TrueNAS offers a storage-oriented platform with explicit hardware guidance, but meeting that guidance may cost more effort than the laptop is worth. The published figures are TrueNAS recommendations, not universal minimum requirements for every server operating system. If your machine cannot meet them, Ubuntu Server or openmediavault may be a more realistic match for a simple file share, provided you accept their different management models.
How to decide between the three
| Your priority | Best starting point | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Several services with no fixed appliance design | Ubuntu Server | It is documented as a minimalist base for common server applications and lets you assemble the stack you need. |
| Shared folders and straightforward NAS administration | openmediavault | Its purpose is storage management on Debian and its documentation includes USB drive interfaces. |
| A managed storage pool with two matched data devices | TrueNAS SCALE 25.10 | Its hardware guide explicitly addresses the memory, boot-device and pool layout expected for the platform. |
| One internal disk, modest RAM and uncertain future services | Ubuntu Server or openmediavault | TrueNAS’s recommendations may be awkward or unmet; choose between general administration and NAS-focused management. |
Do not choose solely by the amount of RAM listed on an installer page. The number of drives, the need for a pool, and your willingness to administer the system are usually more decisive than the laptop’s age.

Storage, backup and data-safety rules
A pool is not a backup
Even when multiple devices are used, a storage pool is not a substitute for an independent backup. A mistaken deletion, malware infection, theft, power event or failure of shared components can affect the live system and its attached storage. Keep at least one separate copy of important files and test that you can restore it.
Recommended Free Tools
Label every device before formatting
Write down each device’s physical location, capacity and intended role. Laptop firmware and Linux device names can be unfamiliar after a reboot. A written map reduces the chance of formatting the wrong disk during installation or later maintenance.
Plan for replacement
Decide how you will obtain a replacement drive, restore services and recover configuration files. If the laptop has a single internal disk, replacement may require taking the entire server offline. If data lives on USB storage, keep spare cables and avoid relying on an unpowered hub for a drive that must stay available.
Networking and day-to-day operation
Give the server a predictable address on your home network, using the method supported by your router or chosen operating system. Document the address, administrator account and shared-folder paths. Test access from every client type you expect to use, such as another computer, a phone or a media player.
Keep the operating system and services updated, but do not apply a major change immediately before an important trip or event. After updates, reboot once and confirm that storage mounts, network shares and required services return automatically. If the laptop’s lid, battery or sleep settings interrupt operation, adjust them only after testing the result locally; platform documentation does not establish one universal laptop policy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCommon failure modes and fixes
The installer cannot see a drive
Power down, reseat the drive or enclosure and check firmware storage settings. Try a different USB port and remove unnecessary hubs. If the device remains invisible, verify that its interface and controller are supported before proceeding.

The server works locally but not from another computer
Check that both devices are on the same network, confirm the server’s address and review the service’s bind and permission settings. A successful local login does not prove that a share is reachable over the network.
The laptop stops serving files after the lid closes
Test lid and sleep behavior with a non-critical share. Change the power policy so the machine remains available only if that is safe for the hardware and environment. Because laptop firmware and power controls vary, document the setting that actually works on your model.
Storage fills unexpectedly
Inspect logs, temporary files, downloads and media directories. Set a monitoring threshold before the disk is full, and move large data to planned storage rather than deleting unknown files. Full disks can prevent services from starting cleanly.
TrueNAS does not fit the hardware
Compare the laptop with the 25.10 recommendations: 8 GB RAM, a 16 GB SSD boot device and two identically sized pool devices. If one or more are unavailable, stop treating the platform as a drop-in choice and reassess Ubuntu Server or openmediavault for a simpler file-sharing design.
Recommended starting plans
Plan A: general-purpose single-drive server
Install Ubuntu Server on the internal drive, reserve enough free space for updates and services, and attach a separately backed-up external disk only when you need additional shared-file capacity. This plan favors flexibility over a managed storage pool.
Plan B: laptop NAS with external storage
Install openmediavault, map the internal system disk and external USB data disk before formatting, create shares for specific household users and keep a second backup copy elsewhere. This plan suits file sharing when the laptop’s ports and power arrangement are dependable.
Plan C: storage-focused machine that meets the recommendations
Use TrueNAS SCALE 25.10 only after confirming the processor, 8 GB memory, SSD boot device and two same-sized data devices. Document the pool and backup design before copying important files. This plan is appropriate when storage management, not a broad collection of applications, is the central goal.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

For most old-laptop projects, start with Ubuntu Server because it is flexible and has clearly documented, modest installation requirements. Choose openmediavault when the machine is primarily a NAS and external USB storage is part of the plan. Choose TrueNAS SCALE 25.10 only when the laptop can meet its storage-oriented recommendations and you are prepared to build around a two-device pool and separate backup. Whichever system you select, verify the exact laptop’s architecture, memory, drives, ports, networking and power behavior before trusting it with important data.
