There is no single list that shows every app capable of noticing a call. On Android, apps may receive certain telephony-state signals if they meet the relevant access requirements, or infer a call from audio-mode information. On iPhone, Apple documents call integration for an app’s own VoIP service and audio-session changes—not a general feed of other apps’ call states. Neither call awareness nor microphone access, by itself, proves an app can record a phone conversation.
First, separate three different capabilities
“Detecting a call” can mean several things. Check which of these you are concerned about before interpreting a permission or privacy indicator:

- Call-state awareness: the app receives or infers information that a call is active.
- Microphone access: the app uses the device microphone. This is not the same as learning call state, and an indicator of microphone access does not show every signal an app might use.
- Call-audio capture: the app receives audio from the phone call itself. Knowing a call is active does not automatically grant this ability.
What apps can learn on Android
Telephony-state signals
Android’s PhoneStateListener API reference documents callbacks for telephony state and specifies access requirements for relevant listeners, including READ_PHONE_STATE or carrier privileges in some cases. Requirements depend on the listener and Android API version; there is not one universal permission rule for every call-related signal. The reference also includes legacy listener information, so its exact applicability depends on the Android version and API in question.

Audio-mode information
Android defines an active voice call by the audio mode returned from AudioManager.getMode(): it is active when the mode is MODE_IN_CALL or MODE_IN_COMMUNICATION. This is a system signal an app may use to infer call activity; it does not mean the app receives the call’s audio. See Android’s Sharing audio input documentation.

Call audio is a separate and narrower issue
Android’s documented voice-call behavior distinguishes ordinary apps from exceptions: the call receives the audio in the documented call-plus-ordinary-app case. An accessibility service can capture audio, and a privileged pre-installed app with CAPTURE_AUDIO_OUTPUT can capture voice-call audio using documented telephony sources or device routing. These exceptions should not be generalized to ordinary downloaded apps. Call-state awareness is not proof of call-audio access.
What apps can learn on iPhone
Apple’s CallKit documentation describes how an app integrates its own VoIP calling service with the system calling interface and other apps. AVAudioApplication covers app-level audio operations, including requesting microphone recording permission. These APIs support an app’s own calling and audio behavior; the cited Apple documentation does not establish a general API for an ordinary app to inspect every other app’s call state.

An incoming phone call can also interrupt an app’s active audio session. Apple’s audio-interruption guidance explains how an audio-playing app can respond to that change. An interruption is relevant to the app’s audio session, but it is not equivalent to a general-purpose feed listing call state across apps.

Check for microphone use and permissions
Android
- When an app appears to use the microphone during a call, check the microphone privacy indicator. On Android 12 and later, tap the microphone or camera indicator to see which app accessed the resource or review recent access. Android describes this behavior in its Privacy indicators documentation and runtime permissions guidance.
- Open system settings and review that app’s Microphone and Phone permissions. Settings labels and locations vary by Android version and device manufacturer.
- Revoke permissions the app does not need. A change may disable features that depend on them.
iPhone
- Open Settings and review the app’s Microphone permission.
- Pay attention to the system microphone-use indicator when it appears. It can show microphone access, but it does not establish whether an app inferred call activity from an audio-session change or its own VoIP integration.
- Turn off microphone access if it is unnecessary for the app’s features.
How to interpret what you find
- A granted permission means the app may use that permission for an authorized purpose; it does not prove the app is using it now.
- A microphone indicator is evidence of microphone access. By itself, it does not prove recording, uploading, or capture of call audio.
- No microphone indicator does not prove an app cannot infer call activity through a system signal or audio behavior.
- If a particular app concerns you, review its platform permissions and privacy documentation, then remove permissions it does not need.
