Compare timestamped evidence from three places: your server or encoder, its outbound network connection, and YouTube Live Control Room (or the Live Streaming API). A stopped process, broken local output, or loss of connectivity points first to your sending chain. If the server appears to be producing and sending data while YouTube reports ingest or stream-health errors, inspect the handoff and configuration. Neither pattern alone proves that YouTube had a service-wide outage.
Start with a shared timeline
Write down when the interruption began and ended, preferably in UTC. Collect records for the same interval rather than comparing unrelated snapshots.

- Save server or encoder logs, process restarts, and CPU or resource monitoring.
- Preserve a local recording or output sample, if available, so you can check whether the stream was being produced correctly.
- Record network monitoring and any connection interruptions.
- In Live Control Room, note each error and its timestamp alongside the stream-health indicator. YouTube says unresolved errors continue to appear; red errors are critical and may prevent a stream from starting or cause viewer problems, while yellow errors may reduce quality. YouTube’s live streaming error messages explains these indicators.
Keep the original logs and timestamps. A server entry saying “sent” and a YouTube status saying “inactive” are conflicting observations to reconcile, not a verdict about which side failed.

Did the process and encoder keep running?
Look for a stopped or restarted streaming process, encoder errors, source-file problems, excessive CPU load, or a damaged local archive. YouTube recommends checking the stream directly in the encoder and reviewing encoder errors, CPU load, and a local archive when troubleshooting. If the local output itself is missing or faulty at the outage time, investigate the server, source, and encoder first. This points to the sending chain, although it does not rule out a simultaneous YouTube problem. See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

Could data leave the server reliably?
If local output looks and sounds healthy, check whether the server had a stable outbound connection during the interruption. YouTube’s guidance identifies a possible outbound internet connection issue in this situation and recommends testing connection strength. Treat a speed test or monitoring result as evidence about the sending path—not proof that every part of the route to YouTube was healthy or faulty.
Use viewer reports as supporting evidence
Separate reports from one viewer, several viewers sharing one internet connection, and viewers on different networks. A problem isolated to one viewer may be local to that viewer. YouTube notes that reports from viewers on different connections can point toward an encoder issue. Correlate reports with server and YouTube timestamps; audience reports alone do not identify the fault.

Check what YouTube received
Review Live Control Room errors and health
Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the health indicator and timestamped error messages. The error’s subject matters: an error that identifies audio, video, bitrate, frame rate, codec, keyframes, or a primary/backup stream mismatch may indicate an output or configuration problem rather than a stopped server. YouTube’s stream health issue reference describes these categories. A warning does not necessarily explain a complete outage, so line it up with the server and network evidence.

Check API status if your setup uses it
For systems that monitor YouTube’s Live Streaming API, inspect the stream’s status.streamStatus and status.healthStatus at the relevant time. YouTube documents states including active (data is being received), inactive (data is not being received), and error (an error condition exists), among others. See the LiveStreams resource documentation.

- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals

If your server logs say it was sending while YouTube reports inactive, compare timestamps, connection logs, endpoint and protocol settings, and any health messages. The mismatch narrows what to investigate; it does not by itself establish whether the server, network path, or YouTube ingest caused the interruption.
Verify stream configuration and ingestion
Check the encoder’s output against YouTube’s current health guidance, including audio/video format, bitrate, frame rate, codecs, keyframes, and consistency between primary and backup streams if you use both. Configuration warnings can impair ingestion or quality without indicating a server crash.

Also verify the configured ingestion protocol and connection details. If using RTMPS, confirm that the sender is configured for the secure protocol expected by the endpoint. YouTube’s ingestion guidance warns that a cleartext RTMP connection aimed at a server expecting RTMPS can time out without a useful response. A protocol or endpoint mismatch can therefore resemble a platform failure from the sender’s perspective.

| Evidence at the same time | What to investigate first | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Process stopped, encoder error, or broken local output | Server, source chain, or encoder | It does not rule out a simultaneous YouTube issue. |
| Local output is healthy, but outbound connectivity is degraded | Server network path or ISP | A connection test alone does not prove the full path to YouTube was healthy or faulty. |
| Server says it is sending; YouTube says inactive or records ingest errors | Compare timestamps, endpoint and protocol settings, connection logs, and YouTube health messages | The mismatch alone does not identify the failed component. |
| YouTube receives data but reports codec, bitrate, frame-rate, keyframe, or backup-stream issues | Encoder output and stream configuration | A warning does not necessarily account for a complete outage. |
| Viewers on separate networks report a problem | Correlate reports with encoder and Control Room evidence | Reports alone do not prove an encoder fault or a YouTube platform fault. |
What can—and cannot—confirm a YouTube-side outage
The official diagnostic guidance provides useful sender, ingest, and stream-health signals, but it does not set a definitive threshold for proving that YouTube caused a service-wide outage. A healthy local preview does not prove that data reached YouTube, just as a YouTube error does not automatically establish a platform-wide incident. To make a careful finding, retain the timeline, compare independent evidence from the server, network, and YouTube, and describe any unresolved uncertainty rather than attributing the outage from one log line.
