Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart with the organization’s official breach notice: verify it through a website or phone number you already trust, then check which information was involved and what steps the organization recommends. A breach lookup such as Have I Been Pwned can offer another clue for an email address, but a match needs context and a clean result is not proof that your information was never exposed. Look separately for signs that someone may be using your information, such as unfamiliar account activity, charges or credit accounts.
Start with the breach notice
If a company says your information was exposed, do not follow links or phone numbers in an unexpected message until you verify it. Type the company’s known web address yourself or use a bookmark you saved earlier, and look for its official incident notice. The FTC recommends acting quickly and checking what information was exposed; its data-breach guidance explains how to begin.

Read the notice for the incident dates, information types, and any assistance offered. A notice can mean your information was exposed even if there is no sign it has been misused. For steps tailored to the information involved, the FTC directs affected people to IdentityTheft.gov/databreach.

Use a breach lookup as one signal
Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) lets people check an email address or username against breach records it has indexed. If you get a match, note the incident name, date, and reported data categories, then confirm details with the affected organization or reliable reporting where possible. A username may belong to someone else with the same handle. HIBP also says some incidents may be unverified or fabricated, sensitive incidents can require verified access, and records can be retired; its FAQ explains how to interpret results.

- LONG-LASTING INK: The high-quality ink works on both glossy and standard paper and provides up to 330 feet of coverage.
A no-result is not an all-clear. HIBP says its collection represents only a small subset of breached records, and some incidents are never publicly released or detected. A lookup cannot establish that your address was never exposed.
Check for signs of misuse
Exposure and misuse are different. A notice or lookup can suggest that information appeared in a data set; it cannot by itself show that someone has taken over an account or used your identity. Investigate warning signs promptly with the service, bank, card issuer, or credit bureau involved.

The FTC’s account-hacking guidance covers signs of account compromise. Its identity-theft guidance explains what to do about suspected misuse. These warning signs may justify action, but do not identify which breach exposed the information.
Respond according to the information exposed
Password or login credentials
Change the exposed password immediately, along with any other account password where you reused it. Turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) where available. Review recovery email addresses and phone numbers, sign out of active sessions, and check email forwarding rules. A password manager can help you create unique passwords; the FTC’s breach response guidance suggests considering one. For accounts that support it, a security key is another possible MFA factor, but it does not detect breaches or tell you whether information was exposed.

Understand U.S. credit freezes, alerts, and monitoring
For U.S. consumers, a credit freeze is free and can restrict access to a credit report for opening new credit. You must contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately to place one. A freeze can add steps when you apply for credit or another service that uses a credit check.
A fraud alert is also free. It asks businesses to verify your identity before opening credit; an initial alert placed with one bureau is relayed to the other two. The FTC explains both options in its identity-theft guidance.
Credit monitoring tracks changes reported to credit bureaus; the FTC says a service may monitor one, two, or all three. It will not necessarily alert you to bank-account withdrawals or tax-return fraud. Identity monitoring checks other databases, but the FTC notes that some public-benefit and tax-related misuse may not be covered. Before paying for monitoring, compare which bureaus and other data sources it checks, how often checks run, what triggers alerts, what recovery help is included, and what insurance excludes. Check whether your bank, employer, insurer, or card provider already offers a service. Monitoring cannot prove that no exposure occurred.
