Yes. A Next.js app can run without an application database: it can serve fixed content, fetch content while building pages, or retrieve data from an external API. A database becomes useful when the app needs to own and query persistent records that change, such as account state or user-created content.
Skipping a database does not require static hosting. A Next.js app can run on a Node.js server and use external services; static export is a separate option with fewer supported features and no runtime Next.js server.

How a Next.js app can work without a database
Next.js is the application framework, not a requirement to use a particular data store. Some pages need no external data at all. Others can get their content from a service that owns the data, rather than from a database managed by the app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIn the App Router, Server Components can retrieve data with fetch or use an ORM or database client. In the Pages Router, static-generation methods can pre-render pages from external data. The right approach depends on where the information lives and when it needs to be up to date.

Choose a data pattern that fits the app
| Pattern | Where data comes from | When it is available | Good fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed content | Defined in the app; no external source is needed for the page. | At build time or when the page is rendered. | Informational pages whose content rarely changes. |
| Build-time fetch | An external endpoint or content service. | During build or pre-rendering. Updates depend on rebuilding or on any regeneration behavior configured for the app. | Content that changes infrequently and can be prepared ahead of requests. |
| Runtime API fetch | An external API or other service that owns the records. | When server-side code makes the request at runtime. | Data managed by another system or service. |
| Database access | A database accessed through an ORM or database client. | When server-side code queries a reachable database. | Persistent, changing records the app needs to own and query. |
These are architectural patterns, not performance rankings. API latency, service availability, freshness, and deployment needs depend on the services and configuration you choose. In the current Next.js data-fetching guide, Server Component fetches are not cached by default and can delay rendering until they complete; caching and streaming affect how that behavior is handled.
When should you add a database?
Add one when the product needs persistent records that the application owns and changes over time—for example, user-created content or account state. That need comes from the product, not from Next.js itself. For data owned by another service, an API or content service may be sufficient, depending on what that service supports.

For an app-owned database, access it from server-side code and ensure that the database is reachable from the deployed environment. Next.js supports database or ORM access in Server Components, but developers remain responsible for authenticating users and authorizing access to data.
Does avoiding a database mean static hosting?
No. Data architecture and deployment are separate decisions. Next.js documents deployment options including a Node.js server, Docker, static export, and platform adapters. Its deployment guide says Node.js supports all Next.js features, while static export has limited support.

Static export
Static export produces files that can be served by a static web server; it does not include a runtime Next.js server. As a result, features that require the Next.js runtime are unavailable in that mode. Choose it when the app’s features can be produced as static assets.
Node.js server deployment
A Node.js deployment preserves the Next.js runtime and allows server-side work, including requests to external services. Platform-specific support can vary. The official guide to deploying Next.js to different platforms, last updated March 25, 2026, states that a Node.js server is what a platform needs to run Next.js.

Backed by a large global community, you can easily find guides, technical support and shared projects online
Keep credentials out of the browser
Database credentials and private API keys belong in server-only environment variables. Next.js makes environment variables available to server code by default, but a variable prefixed with NEXT_PUBLIC_ is inlined into browser JavaScript at build time and should be treated as public. See the Next.js environment-variable guide.
Keeping query logic and credentials out of the client bundle does not replace access controls: authenticate users and authorize each request to protected data. This applies whether the data comes from your database or another service.

Should Server Components call a Route Handler for data?
Not by default. When a Server Component can access its data source directly, Next.js backend-for-frontend guidance recommends fetching from that source rather than adding a Route Handler as an extra hop. A Route Handler can still make sense when a client needs an endpoint or when the app needs to expose a specific server-side interface. Avoid adding one solely to relay a server-side request.
