How to Tell Whether Your ISP or Your Home Network Is Causing Slow Internet

A repeatable comparison of wired and Wi-Fi speed tests can help pinpoint whether slow internet is more likely inside your home or along the ISP connection.

Compare an Ethernet speed test at your main router with Wi-Fi tests on the same device, first near the router and then where the connection feels slow. If Ethernet is consistently much faster, look at Wi-Fi coverage, interference, or device limits. If Ethernet is slow too, check your service plan and outage status, then ask your ISP to investigate. Neither pattern alone proves who is at fault, but a few consistent tests can narrow the cause.

Start with a repeatable speed-test baseline

Before changing equipment or your plan, check the download and upload speeds listed for your service. Test on a capable computer and note the time, connection type, download speed, upload speed, and latency for each run. Mbps means megabits per second. Keep download and upload separate: performance can differ in each direction, and upload speed matters for activities such as video calls. Latency, sometimes described as lag, can affect real-time use even when download speed looks adequate.

  • Run more than one test, ideally at different times of day.
  • Pause large downloads and other heavy household internet use when practical.
  • Use the same device and speed-test method for comparisons.
  • Note whether the slowdown affects one device, one room, or the whole home.

A consumer speed test measures performance for a particular device, test path, and moment. The FCC’s broadband measurement work distinguishes service delivered to a home network from performance inside the home, where users and applications share the connection. Application or device problems can also feel like slow internet without reflecting raw broadband speed. A single result therefore is not proof of an ISP fault or a defective router. See the FCC’s Seventh Measuring Broadband America Fixed Broadband Report for context on those measurement boundaries.

Compare Ethernet and Wi-Fi on the same device

Connect a computer by Ethernet to the main router, then run the same test used for Wi-Fi. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable can be useful for this check if your computer and router have compatible Ethernet ports. A cable can help test the wired path, but it cannot fix an ISP-side problem. Ofcom also recommends checking the Ethernet cable in troubleshooting; TP-Link suggests Cat 6 or better in a specific router troubleshooting scenario.

  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  1. Connect the computer to a LAN port on the main router with Ethernet and run a speed test.
  2. Disconnect Ethernet, connect the same computer to Wi-Fi near the router, and repeat the test.
  3. Run another Wi-Fi test in the room where the connection is poor.
  4. Compare download, upload, and latency results, along with the time and connection type recorded for each test.

Ethernet removes the Wi-Fi link from this comparison, but a test through the router still includes the router and modem or other provider-supplied equipment. A wired result near the expected service speed alongside much slower Wi-Fi points toward the home wireless connection. If both are consistently weak, the cause could be farther along the equipment or ISP path. These results narrow the possibilities; they do not conclusively assign responsibility. Ofcom’s UK consumer guidance on broadband and Wi-Fi problems describes factors that can affect performance.

If Ethernet is good but Wi-Fi is slow

Look for a pattern before replacing anything. A slowdown in one room can point to distance, obstructions, or interference; a slowdown on just one device may instead involve that device’s Wi-Fi capability or settings. If performance drops when many devices are active, shared household use may be contributing.

  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
  • Check whether the router is far from the affected device or obstructed by walls or other barriers.
  • Notice whether many devices are using the connection heavily at the same time.
  • Consider nearby wireless networks and other sources of interference.
  • Check whether the router and the device support the speeds and Wi-Fi capabilities you expect.

The FCC says 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi generally offers broader coverage, while 5 GHz can process data more quickly. Actual results depend on the router, client device, distance, and surroundings; a band name alone does not guarantee a particular speed. The FCC’s home-network tips include checking router placement and whether the router can handle the subscribed service speed. A simple router reboot may clear a temporary glitch. Check that the modem and router are powered and functioning, and check your provider’s outage information.

Consider a new router or mesh Wi-Fi system only if these checks indicate that coverage or equipment capability is the bottleneck. Verify compatibility with your ISP, service plan, and port speeds before choosing equipment.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

If Ethernet is slow too

Repeat the wired test under consistent conditions and confirm that you are comparing it with the correct plan speeds. Check the ISP’s outage or service-status information. If the wired result remains below what you expect, contact the provider with your dated results and details of the test device and connection. Ask it to check for a line issue, service disruption, modem or optical network terminal (ONT) problem, or provisioning issue. The FCC advises contacting the ISP for troubleshooting or outage information when measured speeds are slower than expected.

An optional isolation step is to connect a computer directly to the modem and compare that result with performance through the router. TP-Link describes this as a way to help determine whether its router is involved, but the procedure is manufacturer-specific and may not suit every ISP setup. Modem configurations and provider requirements differ. Follow your ISP’s instructions, and do not bypass or disconnect equipment if the provider says not to.

Use availability information for the right question

If you are considering other providers, the FCC National Broadband Map can help show reported providers and advertised service options for a U.S. address. It reports availability and advertised characteristics, not the performance a household will receive at a particular moment. An availability listing is not evidence that a provider is delivering a certain speed now. The FCC explains how availability information can be challenged in its Broadband Data Collection Help Center.

The cited FCC guidance is U.S.-specific; Ofcom’s consumer guidance is for the UK. In either case, a map or advertised plan is a starting point for checking service options, not a substitute for testing your own connection.
