A sharp rise in Bitcoin’s price is not enough to show that a decline has ended. A recovery becomes more credible when the advance persists on weekly as well as daily charts, price breaks a previous lower high and holds that level on a pullback, and spot-market activity or ETF flows support the move. These are clues, not a reliable way to call a bottom: several can look positive during a bounce that later fails.
Start with the price structure
Look at swing highs and lows on both the daily and weekly chart. In a continuing decline, rallies often stall below earlier highs, creating a sequence of lower highs. A stronger recovery case develops when price clears a meaningful prior lower high, then forms a higher low rather than giving back the entire advance.

The pullback after a breakout matters. If price returns to the reclaimed area and holds it, that level may be acting as support. If it quickly falls back below, the breakout is weaker evidence. Bitwise Europe’s September 2026 analysis described Bitcoin as remaining in a broader lower-high structure until its cited hurdle was cleared; that level was specific to that date, not a lasting threshold. Bitwise Europe’s September 2026 analysis and Binance Research’s September 28, 2026 report illustrate why the structure matters more than the speed of a single rally.

Check whether the move lasts
Compare daily price with the 50-day and 200-day moving averages, and pay attention to weekly closes around longer-term references. The 50-day average reacts more quickly to recent prices; Nasdaq Dorsey Wright describes the 200-day average as an intermediate-term measure of market strength. A brief reclaim can be lost, so look for follow-through and whether price holds above the reference during pullbacks rather than treating one crossing as confirmation. Nasdaq Dorsey Wright’s August 24, 2026 commentary discusses these averages.
#1 Best Overall
Weekly closes can filter out some short-lived daily moves, though they cannot eliminate false signals. In its September 28, 2026 report, Binance Research said Bitcoin’s September 20 weekly close at US$81,159 was its first close above the 50-week moving average since November 9, 2025, a gap of 45 weeks. It described sustained weekly closes above that average as strengthening the reversal case and a close below it as weakening the signal. Those are the report’s dated observations and interpretation, not current levels or universal rules.
Ask whether buyers are participating
A price rise supported by broader spot-market activity is more convincing than one accompanied by weak spot volume. ETF net flows can add context about demand, but they fluctuate and do not guarantee that a trend will continue. Check the source, period and definition for each series: providers can measure activity differently.

For example, Charles Schwab reported weak spot volume alongside a Bitcoin rebound in its April 29, 2026 monitor, a combination that called for caution rather than treating the price move alone as proof of recovery. Schwab’s Bitcoin Monitor is a dated example, not a description of current trading.

Use on-chain cost basis as context
Realized price estimates the average acquisition price of circulating Bitcoin supply. It offers a different lens from moving averages, but it is not a precise floor or a timing tool. Glassnode describes a broad regime marker that is active only when spot price is above both realized price and the 200-day simple moving average. Treat the conjunction as context about market conditions, not proof that a recovery has begun. Glassnode’s chart description explains the marker.
Include risks and counter-signals
Bitcoin can be affected by wider risk conditions as well as chart patterns. Interest-rate expectations and Treasury yields, for example, may work against a recovery setup. Binance Research’s September 28, 2026 commentary noted higher Treasury yields as a risk even while describing technical improvement and ETF demand. When assessing a move, give contrary evidence the same attention as supportive signals: a failed breakout or weaker participation is not erased by a bullish moving-average cross.

Compare the bounce and recovery cases
| What to check | Bounce remains plausible | Recovery case strengthens |
|---|---|---|
| Timeframe | The rally is evident mainly on short-term or daily charts. | Weekly closes support the improvement as well as daily price action. |
| Swing structure | Price stalls beneath an earlier lower high or fails to hold a breakout. | Price clears a prior lower high, then holds a higher low through a pullback. |
| Trend references | A moving-average reclaim is quickly lost. | Price holds relevant averages or reclaimed levels through pullbacks. |
| Participation | Spot activity is weak or demand signals are inconsistent. | Spot activity and sustained ETF demand corroborate the advance. |
| Cost-basis context | Price has not met the chosen on-chain regime condition. | Price remains above both realized price and the 200-day simple moving average, as in Glassnode’s broad marker. |
| Macro conditions | Wider risk conditions, including rate expectations, threaten follow-through. | Macro conditions do not visibly undermine the improvement. |
Mixed evidence is a reason to wait for follow-through, not to force a verdict. Indicators need not turn together; note which ones improved and which did not, along with the observation dates. The categories above are diagnostic, not a mechanical buy-or-sell system.

Moving averages and flow readings can provide useful context, but none reliably identifies a bottom or separates every bounce from a recovery. In its Q3 2024 Signals Report, Fidelity Digital Assets said Bitcoin crossed above and below its 200-day simple moving average seven times during that quarter, before finishing 10% higher than it began. That quarter-specific example shows how a signal can whipsaw even when the period ultimately ends higher; it is not a forecast for a future quarter. Fidelity Digital Assets’ Q3 2024 report provides the example.

Binance Research also described a September 8, 2026 golden cross, when the 50-day average crossed above the 200-day after spending 293 days below it. Its historical sample showed peak gains of roughly 100–600% within the following year after prior crosses, but those were peak gains, not returns from a buy-and-hold strategy; the report cautioned that the sample was small and overlapping. This history does not establish a predictive threshold or a dependable outcome for a new cross.
Make the check repeatable
- Set the timeframes: Review daily and weekly charts so a short rally is not mistaken for a durable change.
- Mark the structure: Identify the prior lower high and see whether price clears it, then holds a higher low.
- Review trend references: Compare price with the 50-day and 200-day averages and inspect weekly closes around longer-term references. Do not treat a single crossing as confirmation.
- Check participation: Review spot activity and ETF net flows, recording the provider and dates rather than mixing incompatible readings.
- Add context and counter-evidence: Check realized-price context and wider risk conditions, then record what would weaken the recovery case.
There is no established universal number of days, percentage points, moving-average crossings or flow reading that proves Bitcoin has moved from a bounce into recovery. “Dead-cat bounce” is best used descriptively for a rally that fails to sustain itself, not as a formal classification with a settled threshold.
