Check the official portal or account used to apply. A confirmation page, receipt, confirmation email, or application record can show that the application was submitted; the portal’s status and messages show what happened afterward. Keep these stages separate: payment, submission, a completeness check, processing, and a final decision are not necessarily the same event.
First, look for proof that the application reached the portal
After submitting, check for an on-screen confirmation, receipt, confirmation email, or message in your application account. Save the application or request number and a copy of the confirmation. If the portal provides a payment record, keep that too.

A bank charge by itself confirms a payment transaction, not that the immigration authority received your application. Look for an application record or submission confirmation in the official system. Email timing also varies: Canada’s immigration authority says some confirmation emails can take a few hours to arrive, so a delayed message alone does not prove that submission failed. Submission confirmation is not always an acknowledgement of completeness
Some systems distinguish the moment you submit from a later check that the application is complete enough to proceed. In Canada, an immediate email confirms submission but is not the acknowledgement of receipt (AOR). IRCC says it receives an online application when submitted and issues an AOR after checking completeness. Use the official account or status-check service
- Identify the correct service. Start from the government website for the country and visa type, or use an application center’s tracking service only if the official instructions direct you there. Avoid search ads and unsolicited messages when finding a status page.
- Sign in to the account used to apply. Look for submitted applications, application history, messages, or a status-check option. Depending on the system, you may need account credentials, an application number, a request number, or passport details.
- Open the application record and read its messages. Check for a request for more information, missing documents, a payment issue, or instructions about an appointment. A status label alone may not show whether action is required.
- Check for a decision notice. Review the portal and the email address on the application, including spam or junk folders. Follow the notice’s instructions and verify where the decision letter or visa document is available.
For example, Immigration New Zealand directs applicants to the online account used to apply to check progress and messages. Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes an inquiry service that uses a request number. These are country-specific examples, not a shared procedure for every visa portal. Interpret the status in that portal’s terms
Status words are not standardized across countries. Use the portal’s own definitions and read any linked messages before deciding whether the application is waiting, needs your attention, or has a result.

A final decision should have a decision notice
Look for an explicit decision and instructions, rather than treating a submission receipt or an in-progress status as approval. UK guidance says a letter or email tells applicants that a decision has been made and what to do next; successful applicants receive an eVisa. Processing times depend on the visa and when processing starts
Do not apply one country’s timing to another. UK Home Office guidance accessed on 11 October 2026 gives a usual decision range of 3 to 12 weeks, depending on visa type. It says processing starts after the application has been submitted, biometrics provided, and supporting documents and evidence provided. This is UK-specific guidance, not a guarantee or a general visa timeline; consult the UK decision-time guidance for the relevant application.

- Return to the official portal and check the account’s application history, messages, and any status-check service.
- Check the email address used on the application, including spam and junk folders. Allow for possible email delays rather than treating a missing message as proof of failure.
- If there is still no application record, contact the authority through the portal’s official help or contact route. Provide the application or request number if you have one, plus relevant submission and payment evidence.
- If the authority’s stated processing estimate has passed, check its current guidance and use the contact route it specifies.
- Do not submit a duplicate application or pay again just because an email is late. First establish whether the official system has a record and follow that authority’s instructions.
Use government or officially authorized services, and share passport details and application identifiers only through those channels.
