In new Outlook for Windows and Outlook on the web, go to Settings > General > Appearance. In classic Outlook for Windows, choose File > Office Account > Office Theme. Mac and mobile apps have their own appearance settings.
First, identify your Outlook version on Windows
New Outlook has a Settings button in the top-right corner. Classic Outlook has a File tab and does not have that Settings button. The controls differ, so follow the section for the interface you see. Microsoft’s version-identification guide has more detail.

Change the theme in new Outlook for Windows
- Select Settings in the top-right corner.
- Go to General > Appearance.
- Under Dark mode, choose Dark, then select Save.
- To switch back, choose Light or Use system settings, then save.
If you want Outlook’s controls dark but prefer a light reading pane and compose window, open the View tab and select Light Reading Pane. While reading a message, Turn on the lights changes its background. While composing, use the light-or-dark background button on the Message toolbar. Microsoft’s Outlook dark-mode instructions describe these controls.
Change the theme in classic Outlook for Windows
- Select File > Office Account.
- Under Office Theme, choose Black.
- Select the back arrow to return to Outlook.
The Office theme applies across Microsoft 365 desktop applications, not only Outlook. To keep message backgrounds white, go to File > Options > General and select Never change the message background color. This setting disables the in-message light/dark toggle.

Change the theme in Outlook on the web or Outlook.com
- Select Settings.
- Go to General > Appearance.
- Under Dark mode, choose Dark and save. To turn it off, choose Light or Use system settings and save.
For an individual message, use Turn on the lights in the reading pane to view its original formatting. If the control is not visible, check the More menu. Microsoft’s web and Outlook.com instructions explain the reading-pane option.
Change the theme in Outlook for Mac
In Outlook, select Outlook > Preferences > General, then choose Light, Dark, or System. System follows the macOS appearance setting. You can also change the device appearance from Apple menu > System Settings > Appearance and select Light or Dark. On older macOS versions, use System Preferences > General. Microsoft’s Mac instructions cover Outlook’s appearance choices.

Change the theme in Outlook for iPhone or iPad
In Outlook, open Settings > Appearance. Choose:
- Light to keep Outlook light.
- Dark to keep it dark regardless of the device setting.
- System Default to follow the iPhone or iPad appearance.
To change the device-wide setting, open iOS Settings > Display & Brightness and choose Light or Dark. Microsoft’s instructions for Office apps following system dark mode specify iOS 13 or later; menu details may differ on older iOS versions. See Microsoft’s Outlook for iOS guidance.

Change the theme in Outlook for Android
Open Outlook’s app settings and look under Preferences for Dark Theme. Microsoft documents two choices: Dark Theme stays on until you turn it off, while Set by Battery Saver turns the dark theme on when the device is in Battery Saver mode. Microsoft’s Android instructions provide the app-specific steps.

If the appearance setting is missing
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for Outlook on Android and iOS recommends closing and reopening the app: open the multitasking screen, swipe up on the Outlook app thumbnail to close it, then launch Outlook again. Read Microsoft’s mobile troubleshooting steps.
