An online course is worth taking when its learning outcomes fit your goal, its content and instructor are credible, its teaching helps you learn the material, and its credential, cost and terms work for your situation. Treat ratings and quality badges as evidence to weigh—not guarantees. A useful first question is the CDC’s: “How do you know if a training is worth your time and meets your needs?”
Start with what you need to learn
Before comparing platforms or watching sample videos, write down what you want to be able to do after the course. Then look for stated learning objectives that describe what learners will know, understand or do. A broad promise such as “master digital marketing” is less useful than specific skills or knowledge you can check against your goal.

Check who the course is designed for and whether its expected depth matches your starting point. The objectives should be realistic for the course length; a short introduction should not imply that it will provide advanced, job-ready expertise. The CDC’s guidance on identifying quality training and ASHA’s course-evaluation checklist both emphasize clear outcomes and audience fit.

Look for the organization or person responsible for the course content, along with the instructor’s relevant qualifications and experience. Credentials matter most when they connect directly to what is being taught; a polished biography alone does not show that the material is accurate or suitable for your purpose.
#1 Best Overall
For claims that affect your decisions, see whether the course points to current evidence or references near the relevant lesson. Check for financial or other disclosures that could affect how a topic is presented. If the course page does not identify who owns or reviews the content, treat that as an unanswered question—not proof that the course is poor.
Look for teaching and assessment that match the goal
A long video library is not the same as a well-designed course. The format should suit the skill: demonstrations and practice may matter for hands-on tasks, while structured explanation may be appropriate for foundational concepts. Look for opportunities to apply ideas, ask questions or get feedback when those are important to the outcome.

Assessments should test the stated objectives, not merely confirm that you clicked through the material. A quiz, project or practical exercise can provide evidence of learning if it measures the skill the course promises to teach. The Online Learning Consortium’s course review process groups design criteria into Essential Design and Advanced Design and addresses objectives, alignment, delivery, interaction, assessment, accessibility, inclusive practice and technology. Its process page identifies 35 indicators; the page does not state a publication year.

Check whether the material is current and independently reviewed
Find the publication date or the date of the latest review, then compare it with how quickly the subject changes. A course on a stable foundation may remain useful longer than one about rapidly changing software, regulations or platform features. For technical instruction, check whether the interface, version or workflow shown matches what you will use.

Reviews can add context, but ask what they establish. Learner ratings usually report satisfaction, not necessarily whether students achieved the outcomes you care about. Developer, expert or peer review and accreditation can offer other kinds of evidence; look for who conducted the review and what it covered. The CDC advises that a missing quality indicator on a listing does not by itself mean the training is low quality (CDC, October 28, 2024).
Verify the credential for the use you have in mind
If you need continuing-education credit, academic credit or professional recognition, identify exactly what the course awards and who recognizes it. Confirm the credential directly with the employer, licensing body, school or professional organization whose requirements matter to you. Accreditation varies by type, and a badge or certificate does not guarantee employment or universal acceptance.

For example, the Online Learning Consortium says its Exemplary Course Endorsement is valid for three years; that is a time-limited course endorsement, not a promise of transfer credit or career outcomes. Check the issuing body’s current terms and the receiving institution’s rules before enrolling.
Calculate the full cost and commitment
Compare the registration fee with similar courses that teach comparable material, but do not assume there is one universally fair price. Include required software, materials, exam fees or other costs, as well as the time needed for lessons and assignments. Before paying, read the refund and cancellation policy and note any deadlines or conditions. ASHA’s checklist recommends checking fees, cancellation terms and course requirements.
Best Value
A lower price may still be poor value if the course lacks the practice or support you need; a higher price is not evidence of better teaching. Judge cost against the specific outcomes, format, time commitment and recognition you expect—not marketing claims about likely earnings or jobs.
Compare courses with a decision checklist
When choosing between two or more options, compare them against the same criteria rather than relying on a star rating or headline promise:
- Goal fit: Do the stated outcomes match what you want to learn, and is the intended audience right for your level?
- Expertise and evidence: Are the content owner and instructor identifiable and qualified, with relevant sources and disclosures?
- Currency: Is the material recent enough for the subject, and are important lessons reviewed?
- Learning design: Do the teaching methods, interaction and assessments give you a plausible way to practice and demonstrate the outcomes?
- Recognition and review: Does the credential count for your intended purpose, and is it clear who reviewed or accredited the course?
- Feedback: Do learner comments describe the aspects you care about, while avoiding the assumption that satisfaction proves learning?
- Total commitment: What are the full costs, time requirements and cancellation terms?
Write down any missing information and ask the provider before you enroll if it could change your decision. A course can be useful without a prominent badge, and a badge cannot establish that the course fits your particular goal.
