How can I tell whether an old object is an unexploded landmine? You cannot reliably confirm that it is safe from its appearance. If it could be a mine, shell, grenade, or other munition, do not inspect or handle it: leave carefully by the route you used to reach it, then report it from a safe place.
What to do if you suspect an object is a munition
Use the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ three-part guidance—Recognize, Retreat, Report—as a response sequence, not as a way to identify the object.

- Recognize the possibility. If the object could be a landmine or other military munition, treat it as dangerous. You do not need to determine exactly what it is.
- Retreat carefully. Do not approach, touch, move, disturb, or collect it. Leave by the route you used to enter the area; do not go closer for a better look or photograph.
- Report it from safety. Give authorities the location and a general description of what you already noticed. Do not return to inspect it or place a marker beside it.
In the United States, USACE guidance says to call 911. Elsewhere, contact local police or emergency services, or the relevant local mine-action authority. UNMAS advises people not to approach or touch mines, unexploded ordnance, abandoned ordnance, improvised explosive devices, or other suspicious objects, but it does not give one emergency number for every country.

Why appearance cannot prove an old object is safe
USACE says munitions can be easy or difficult to identify and may become more dangerous with age. The U.S. Army’s February 2011 UXO safety fact sheet describes ordnance that may be clean or rusty, exposed or buried, and complete or in pieces; it says to regard munitions as dangerous regardless of size or age.

That means rust, damage, partial burial, small size, or an incomplete shape are not reasons to approach or assume an object is harmless. A photograph or visual guess cannot reliably rule out an explosive hazard. The safe purpose of “recognition” is to notice a possible munition and respond appropriately—not to make a diagnosis.
Common questions about suspected unexploded ordnance
Is a rusty old shell safe?
Rust does not establish that a munition is safe. Do not touch or move it; retreat and report it.

What if it has been there for years or someone has handled it before?
Age and prior handling do not establish safety. USACE warns that even a munition kept for years may still pose an explosive hazard. Do not disturb it; report it from a safe place.
