There is no universal winner: Cloudflare, Amazon S3, and Snowflake operate at different layers of the data stack. Start with Cloudflare R2 when you need to serve unstructured objects to internet users; start with Amazon S3 for an AWS-centered data lake; and start with Snowflake for managed SQL analytics with separately provisioned compute. Cloudflare’s newer Data Platform adds Iceberg-oriented ingest, catalog, and query capabilities around R2, so it may also fit some lakehouse workloads. Choose by workload and existing architecture, then model the full cost for your traffic, region, and query patterns.
What are you actually comparing?
These are not three interchangeable storage products. R2 is the closest direct comparison to S3: both store objects. Snowflake is a managed data platform with compute for SQL and supported code workloads. Cloudflare’s Data Platform extends the R2 story with Iceberg tables, a catalog, ingestion, and query options; it does not make every Cloudflare data product the equivalent of S3 or Snowflake.

| Option | What it is | How to think about it |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare R2 | Object storage with an S3-compatible API | Compare it most directly with S3 for unstructured objects, especially when internet delivery or data movement is important. |
| Cloudflare Data Platform | Iceberg-oriented ingest, catalog, and query services around R2 | Evaluate it as a data-lake or lakehouse path, including its available query options and connections to Iceberg-compatible engines. |
| Amazon S3 | Object storage and a common AWS data-lake storage layer | Evaluate storage classes, lifecycle choices, and the AWS analytics services you will use alongside it. |
| Snowflake | Managed data platform with SQL and supported code workloads | Evaluate warehouse compute, query patterns, concurrency, and whether data will be held in Snowflake-managed or external storage. |
Cloudflare itself recommends choosing among its application data services by data pattern: D1 for SQL, Workers KV for distributed key-value reads, R2 for objects, and Durable Objects for strongly consistent state and coordination. These are distinct primitives, not interchangeable database editions. See Cloudflare’s application data guidance.

| An AWS-centered data lake with multiple AWS processing choices and storage tiers | Amazon S3 | Storage-class and lifecycle design, requests, retrieval, transfer, and which AWS processing services your pipeline needs. |
| Managed SQL analytics with compute provisioned independently from other workloads | Snowflake | Warehouse size and runtime, concurrency, query frequency, and the chosen storage arrangement. |
| Application data in a Cloudflare Workers-oriented architecture | The Cloudflare primitive that matches the data pattern | Whether the need is relational SQL, distributed key-value reads, object storage, or strongly consistent coordination. |

Cloudflare describes R2 as S3-compatible object storage with no egress fees, aimed at unstructured data accessed over the internet; its examples include web assets, AI training data, and user-generated content. That makes R2 a credible first option for object-serving patterns, but compatibility does not guarantee every S3 feature or workflow will behave identically. Check the specific API operations and integrations your application depends on in Cloudflare’s R2 documentation.

How do the analytics and Iceberg options differ?
Cloudflare Data Platform
Cloudflare’s current Data Platform description covers Apache Iceberg tables, R2 Data Catalog, ingestion, and query options, including connections to Iceberg-compatible engines. That widens Cloudflare’s role beyond object storage: it can be considered for teams building around R2 and open table formats. The available product description establishes those capabilities, but does not by itself settle workload-specific query performance, integration maturity, or governance fit. Review the current Cloudflare Data Platform offering and the R2 documentation against your actual engine and pipeline requirements.
Amazon S3 and AWS analytics services
AWS positions S3 as the primary storage platform in an AWS data lake; analytics and processing are supplied by separate services. Its guidance names Athena, Lambda, and EMR among the processing choices. Consequently, an S3 comparison should include the surrounding AWS architecture—not only the bucket—along with the lifecycle and storage-class design described in AWS’s data lake storage guidance.

Snowflake warehouses and external Iceberg storage
Snowflake virtual warehouses are independent compute clusters for SQL and supported code workloads. Snowflake also documents Iceberg tables whose data and metadata can reside in external cloud storage such as S3. This gives teams a managed analytics option without assuming all table data must use Snowflake-managed storage. The tradeoff to model is the warehouse compute and the chosen storage and integration arrangement; see Snowflake’s architecture documentation.
What should you compare before choosing?
- Data and access pattern: distinguish object serving and application reads from analytical table scans, SQL queries, or coordinated application state.
- Compute and data placement: establish which service stores the data, which service runs processing, and whether queries use a managed warehouse or an Iceberg-compatible engine.
- Existing ecosystem: account for AWS services and skills already in use, Cloudflare Workers architecture, Snowflake workloads, and integrations your team must maintain.
- Operations and transfer: count requests, writes, reads, retrieval, data movement, and egress destinations—not just stored capacity.
- Recovery and governance: verify the durability design, recovery process, access controls, retention, and any governance needs for your specific data.
- Geography and availability: validate location, residency, and feature availability for the regions and services your workload requires.
Cloudflare’s R2 documentation presents 99.999999999% annual durability as a design target in documentation updated April 21, 2026. AWS lists the same 99.999999999% durability design target for several named S3 storage classes, while distinguishing S3 One Zone-IA from multi-AZ classes; the cited AWS page does not state a publication year. These vendor design figures are not head-to-head tests and do not establish equivalent availability, latency, recovery behavior, or service fit. Consult Cloudflare’s R2 explanation and AWS’s S3 data protection documentation for the respective qualifications.

- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
How should you estimate total cost?
Do not choose a cost winner from the product descriptions alone. Cloudflare explicitly markets R2 as having no egress fees, which can matter for repeated internet delivery or cross-platform access. It does not mean a complete workload has no material charges or is automatically cheaper. S3 offers multiple storage classes, with request, retrieval, and transfer considerations; Snowflake adds warehouse compute to the cost model.
Build the estimate for one realistic period using the same workload assumptions for each candidate:
Rank #4
- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
- Stored volume, retention period, and expected growth.
- Read and write volume, request counts, and any retrieval charges.
- Where data enters and leaves, transfer destinations, and expected egress.
- Region and applicable storage or service options.
- For analytics, query volume, runtime, warehouse sizing, and concurrency.
- For a lakehouse, ingestion and catalog needs, query engine, and any repeated movement between storage and compute.
Then test the estimate against peak traffic, not just an average month. The cited vendor documentation describes product positioning and design claims; it does not provide a standardized benchmark or a bill for your workload. There is no established independent head-to-head latency, throughput, availability, or cost figure here that supports declaring a general winner.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich should you choose?
- Choose R2 as the first candidate for internet-facing object storage when its S3 API compatibility and no-egress-fee positioning match your delivery pattern.
- Choose S3 as the first candidate when your data lake and processing design are centered on AWS services and storage classes.
- Choose Snowflake as the first candidate when the central requirement is managed SQL analytics with independently provisioned compute.
- Compare Cloudflare Data Platform and Snowflake’s Iceberg paths when open table formats are central and engine or storage flexibility matters.
These are starting points, not universal verdicts: the right choice depends on the data pattern, surrounding services, regional requirements, and a workload-specific cost and integration check.
