Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with the exact symptom and where it happens; then check one possible cause at a time. “No Service” or “Searching” means the iPhone is not connected to a mobile network, but it does not identify why. iOS, carrier service or account settings, SIM/eSIM setup, and hardware can produce overlapping symptoms. The steps below help narrow the possibilities and identify what to ask Apple or your carrier—not prove a fault at home.
Record what fails before changing anything
Write down the exact message or failure: “SOS,” “No Service,” “Searching,” “I can’t make or receive calls,” “Cellular Update Failed,” or “I can’t set up an eSIM.” These symptoms have different troubleshooting paths, so retaining the exact wording helps when you contact support.

Also note the iPhone model and iOS version, when the problem began, whether it happens every time, and what changed beforehand. Relevant changes include an iOS update, SIM or eSIM change, travel, a new location, a drop, or liquid exposure. Describe which functions are affected: cellular data, calls, eSIM activation, updating, charging, display, audio, or something else. These details are useful for comparing possibilities; they do not by themselves diagnose the cause.

Compare the clues without treating them as proof
| What you observe | What it may help distinguish |
|---|---|
| The problem occurs in one area but not elsewhere | Location-specific coverage or an outage is worth checking with the carrier. The pattern alone does not rule out a device or settings problem. |
| Only calls, only cellular data, or several cellular functions fail | The affected services help frame what to report to the carrier and Apple; none of these patterns proves a particular cause. |
| The issue began after an iOS update | Timing makes software worth checking, but it does not establish that iOS caused the problem. |
| The issue began after a SIM/eSIM change, travel, impact, or liquid exposure | That timing helps focus checks on line setup, roaming, or possible device damage, without confirming any one of them. |
| The carrier confirms an outage, account block, inactive line, plan issue, or network-side call error | This is evidence for the carrier/account path. If those checks are clear, continue device troubleshooting; that still does not prove hardware failure. |
Check iPhone settings and software one step at a time
For cellular connection problems, Apple recommends toggling Airplane Mode and restarting, checking for iOS and carrier settings updates, and confirming the intended line is enabled on Dual SIM devices. Change one thing, then retest and note the result so you can tell which action mattered.

- Refresh the cellular connection: Turn Airplane Mode on for at least 15 seconds, then turn it off. Test the affected service.
- Restart the iPhone: After it starts again, retest before moving on.
- Check iOS: Open Settings > General > Software Update and install an available update if appropriate. Retest afterward. An issue that followed an update is a clue, not proof that the update is defective.
- Check carrier settings: Connect to Wi-Fi, then open Settings > General > About. If a carrier settings update is offered, install it and retest.
- Check the line and SIM: On Dual SIM, verify that the line you intend to use is enabled. If you use a physical SIM, reseat it; ask the carrier about a SIM that may be damaged, ill-fitting, or recently transferred.
For failed or missed calls, Apple notes that settings, outdated software, or the network may be involved. Check carrier settings and iOS updates, and test after each troubleshooting action rather than making several changes at once. See Apple’s call troubleshooting guidance and cellular connection guidance.
Ask the carrier to check account and network conditions
Your carrier can verify information that is not visible from iPhone settings. Ask it to confirm:

- Small and portable design for easy handling.
- High-definition screen display for clear readings.
- Automatic scan detection for efficient testing.
- Supports both Lightning and Type-C interfaces.
- One-key retest function for quick results.
- The account is active and in good standing.
- Your location has coverage and is not affected by an outage.
- The device or line is not blocked or barred.
- Your plan supports the service you are trying to use.
- For call problems, whether there are network-side call errors or an account billing block.
Apple says only the wireless carrier can access and manage account details. If you are travelling internationally, ask whether data roaming needs to be enabled. An outage, account restriction, inactive line, unsupported plan, or carrier-side call error gives you a concrete carrier/account issue to address. If the carrier says those checks are clear, continue with device-side troubleshooting rather than assuming the hardware is faulty. Apple’s cellular troubleshooting steps and call guidance describe these checks.

For “I can’t set up an eSIM,” confirm the prerequisites before treating the problem as an iOS fault: a Wi-Fi or hotspot connection, an active plan, support for eSIM from the provider, and the latest iOS version the iPhone can use. Then check whether the line appears in Cellular settings, try Airplane Mode and a restart, and check for provider settings under Settings > General > About.

Distinguish update errors from connection or hardware issues
If the problem is an update or restore error rather than a cellular symptom, use Apple’s error-specific steps instead of assuming that a failed update means iOS itself is defective. Apple’s iOS update and restore error guidance addresses software, connection, and possible hardware causes. Keep the exact error code or wording when following those steps or contacting support.

Escalate to diagnostics or service when the basic checks are exhausted
On iPhone models running iOS 18 or later, Apple says its Support app can run additional diagnostics that may help determine the source of some device issues. Treat a result as a useful clue, not a guarantee that every fault or symptom can be diagnosed remotely. The availability and scope described here are Apple’s guidance at its cellular support page.
Apple’s separate diagnostics-mode instructions are framed around Self Service Repair and System Configuration, not as a general-purpose test for every iPhone owner. In that flow, Apple’s prompt says: “Diagnostics allow Apple to identify potential hardware and software issues with this device.” See Apple’s diagnostics-mode instructions.
