To narrow down an iPhone cellular problem, check both sides: ask your carrier to verify your account, local coverage or outages, device status, plan, and SIM or eSIM provisioning; then check the iPhone’s line selection, connection, and software. “SOS,” “No Service,” or “Searching” shows that the phone is not connected to a cellular network, but does not by itself reveal why.
Start by recording what fails and where
Note the status-bar message and whether calls, texts, mobile data, or all three are affected. Record whether the problem occurs in one location or across several. This gives you and the carrier useful details to compare against local coverage and network status.

Apple Support says, “If you see "No Service" or "Searching" in the status bar of your device, your device isn’t connected to a cellular network.” That describes the connection state, not its cause: account restrictions, an outage, weak coverage, SIM or eSIM provisioning, settings, or a phone fault can all require investigation.

Try quick iPhone reconnection checks
- Toggle Airplane Mode: If a network should be available, turn Airplane Mode on, wait at least 15 seconds, and turn it off.
- Restart the iPhone: Check whether service returns after the restart. A recovery is evidence that the connection was interrupted, but it does not establish whether the interruption originated with the carrier or the phone.
Check that the intended cellular line and SIM are available
For Dual SIM
Open Settings > Cellular and confirm that the line you intend to use is turned on. If the line is missing, contact the carrier to set up an eSIM or use a physical SIM, as appropriate for your device and plan.

For a physical SIM
Remove and reinsert the SIM. If it is damaged, does not fit correctly, or was moved from another device, ask the carrier whether you need a replacement. This check does not apply to eSIM-only devices.
Ask the carrier to verify carrier-side causes
Contact the carrier and ask it to check the account and the line at the affected location. The carrier can access account and network information that Apple cannot manage.

- Small and portable design for easy handling.
- High-definition screen display for clear readings.
- Automatic scan detection for efficient testing.
- Supports both Lightning and Type-C interfaces.
- One-key retest function for quick results.
- Is the account active and in good standing, with no restriction on service?
- Is there coverage where the problem occurs, and is there a current outage?
- Is the device blocked or barred from the network?
- Is the plan set up correctly for the line?
- Is the SIM or eSIM correctly provisioned?
If the carrier identifies an outage, account restriction, plan problem, device block, or provisioning issue, have it resolved and test service again. A carrier-side finding is strong evidence for that cause, but it does not rule out a second problem with the iPhone.
Check iOS and carrier settings
- Update iOS: Install an available iOS update using the usual update controls for your device.
- Check for carrier settings: Connect to Wi-Fi, then open Settings > General > About. Install a carrier settings update if prompted. Apple notes that a newly inserted SIM may require settings for its new carrier.
Use the results to choose the next step
| What you find | What it points to | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The carrier confirms an account restriction, outage, insufficient coverage, device block, plan issue, or missing SIM/eSIM provisioning. | A carrier, account, coverage, or provisioning cause is supported by direct carrier-side information. | Work with the carrier to resolve it, then retest in the affected location. |
| The carrier confirms the account and local network are functioning and the intended line is provisioned, but the issue persists after the iPhone checks. | The phone merits further investigation. This does not, by itself, prove a hardware fault. | On iOS 18 or later, Apple says the Apple Support app can run additional diagnostics that may help identify the source. Contact Apple or seek device service if hardware is suspected. |
| The only evidence is SOS, No Service, or Searching. | The iPhone is not connected to a cellular network; the status message alone does not distinguish carrier, SIM/eSIM, settings, or hardware causes. | Continue with the carrier checks and iPhone checks above. |
Menu wording and available options can vary by iOS release, iPhone model, SIM configuration, country, and carrier. Coverage, outage, account, and provisioning status can also change by location and time, so confirm them with your carrier when the issue occurs.
