Check your device’s camera or microphone indicator, then open its privacy controls to see which app is using—or recently used—the sensor. The indicator’s color and location vary by device. If the access came from a website, check that site’s permission in the browser as well as the operating system’s controls.
Check the active-use indicator first
An indicator is the quickest way to spot sensor use, but it only signals that the camera or microphone is active or was recently active. By itself, it does not show whether the app saved a recording or sent it elsewhere.

iPhone and iPad
On iOS 14 or later, an orange dot means an app is using the microphone; a green dot means it is using the camera, or the camera and microphone together. With Differentiate Without Colour enabled, the microphone indicator may appear as an orange square. Open Control Center to see which app is using or recently used the sensors. Apple says the indicator can appear even when the app is not in the foreground. Apple: About the orange and green indicators in your iPhone status bar

What an indicator can—and cannot—tell you
- It can show sensor use: an indicator or recent-use record is evidence that an app accessed the camera or microphone.
- It does not establish what happened to the data: the indicator alone cannot prove that audio or video was recorded, stored, or transmitted.
- Controls differ by platform: Android’s presentation can vary by device maker, Windows may not identify every desktop app individually, and a website may have its own browser permission.
