Starlink Direct to Cell lets a compatible LTE phone connect to cellular equipment carried by a satellite. A participating mobile carrier supplies the LTE spectrum and links the service to its network, so users do not need a special satellite handset or antenna. The concept is designed for ordinary phones, but actual support depends on the carrier, phone model, country and service conditions.
How does a phone connect to a Starlink satellite?
A Direct to Cell satellite carries an advanced eNodeB modem—the base-station equipment that normally helps a cell tower communicate with phones. The satellite can therefore act like a cell site in space. Your phone uses its usual LTE radio to connect, while a participating mobile operator provides spectrum for the satellite signal and integrates the service with its network, in a way SpaceX describes as similar to standard roaming. Starlink’s Direct to Cell overview and its technology information describe this arrangement.

In other words, the phone is not making a special satellite call using a new radio. The satellite carries cellular network equipment, and the carrier supplies the spectrum and network connection that make the link usable.
Why is connecting an ordinary phone difficult?
A satellite hundreds of kilometres above Earth is farther away than a ground-based cell tower and moves quickly relative to a person on the ground. A normal phone has a small antenna and less transmit power than dedicated satellite equipment, making the link challenging.

SpaceX says its system addresses those challenges with phased-array antennas on satellites, custom silicon and software designed to handle Doppler shift, latency and changing satellite connections. That is the company’s account of its engineering, not an independent comparative performance test.
Does Direct to Cell require a special phone, app or antenna?
Starlink describes the service as working with existing LTE phones without special phone hardware, firmware changes or a dedicated app. That is the general design, not a guarantee that every LTE handset is eligible. The participating carrier determines which models and plans it supports. For example, T-Mobile says T-Satellite works automatically on most recent smartphones and provides a phone-support check and service details. Check your precise model with your carrier before relying on service.
Starlink also discusses compatibility with common LTE IoT modem categories, subject to the service country’s bands and modem requirements. That statement concerns compatible devices and operator deployments; it does not establish that every consumer phone will work.

What can you do with the connection?
Do not assume that satellite service will behave like ordinary cellular broadband. T-Mobile describes satellite data as limited: some apps may not work or may behave differently, and performance can differ from traditional cellular service. The available experience depends on factors such as the handset, carrier implementation, satellite visibility and local service conditions.
- App compatibility: Some apps may be unavailable or behave differently over satellite data.
- Performance: The carrier warns that speeds are limited; the cited information does not promise ordinary broadband performance.
- Availability: A phone’s ability to connect depends on the service and conditions where it is being used, not only on whether it has LTE.
For current features and terms, consult your carrier’s service page rather than assuming that all phones or apps have the same experience.
Where is Starlink Direct to Cell available?
Availability is tied to mobile-operator partnerships and changes over time. In a February 2025 announcement, SpaceX said commercial satellite messaging was available in the United States with T-Mobile and in New Zealand with One NZ. SpaceX also named other operator partners, but a partnership announcement alone does not establish that consumer service is live in every partner’s country. Check the local carrier’s current service page for availability, eligible plans and coverage terms.

In the United States, an FCC order from December 2024 records authorization for SpaceX to provide supplemental coverage from space. Regulatory authorization enables service under the relevant conditions; it is not a promise of access on every carrier or in every location. Read the FCC order announcement.

In 2025, Starlink reported that more than 650 first-generation Direct to Cell satellites had been launched to low-Earth orbit in 18 months, and that more than 12 million people had connected at least once. These are company-reported figures. The reach figure counts people who connected at least once; it is not an independent count of current active subscribers or a measure of continuous coverage. Starlink’s updates page provides the company’s announcement.
Quick Recap
What should you check before relying on it?
- Confirm country and carrier availability: Look for the carrier’s current Direct to Cell or satellite service page; an operator partnership announcement is not enough to confirm consumer availability.
- Check your exact phone model: Use the carrier’s compatibility checker or support information. Do not treat “LTE phone” as a universal eligibility guarantee.
- Review plan and feature terms: Confirm which features are included and what the carrier says about data and app support.
- Set expectations for the connection: Satellite service can have limited data performance and may not support every app or work in every local condition.
