How to Tell Whether an AI-Generated Threat or Security Alert Is a Scam

A convincing voice, logo or warning may be AI-assisted, but style cannot prove legitimacy. Stop, avoid the supplied contact route, and verify every security alert through an official channel you reach independently.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pause and verify independently. Do not call the number, click the link, open an attachment, send money, disclose a password or payment detail, or grant remote access because an alert tells you to. Open the named company’s official app or type its known web address yourself. If you need to call, use a number you already trust or one published on that independently reached official site, a receipt, or product packaging.

You usually cannot prove from wording, a logo, a voice, or a polished video that an alert was made by artificial intelligence. AI can help criminals impersonate support agents, but the safe question is whether the request can be confirmed through a separate, trusted channel.

What an AI-assisted security scam looks like

A scammer may use generative AI to write a convincing email, clone or modify a voice, create a realistic support script, or produce a branded-looking web page. Microsoft’s Digital Defense Report 2025 describes threat actors using AI-modified voices while impersonating support agents by phone or video. Microsoft also reported that it thwarted USD 4 billion in fraudulent transactions and scams during April 2024 through April 2025, many of which it said were likely aided by AI. That company-reported figure is not a measure of the total size of AI-enabled scams.

The technology changes how convincing an impersonation can be; it does not create a reliable consumer test for detecting AI authorship. A natural voice can be fake, and an awkward sentence can be written by a real person. Treat the requested action and the verification path as more important than the apparent quality of the message.

The strongest warning signs

Urgency and threats

“Act now,” “your account will be closed,” “your files will be deleted,” or “police will be notified” are pressure tactics. The demand may be genuine in rare cases, but time pressure is a reason to stop, not proof that a message was AI-generated. A legitimate organization should allow you to end the conversation and reach it through an official channel.

A pop-up that tells you to call

Do not call a number displayed in a browser pop-up, full-screen warning, error page, or recorded message. The Federal Trade Commission says, “Real security pop-up warnings and messages will never ask you to call a phone number.” Microsoft’s support guidance similarly states, “Genuine Microsoft error messages never include a phone number to call.” A familiar logo, a loud alarm, or a voice claiming your computer is infected does not change that rule.

An unsolicited support call

Be suspicious when an unexpected caller says they detected a problem and asks you to install software, open a remote-access session, read out a code, disclose a password, provide unrelated personal information, or pay for a repair. Scammers can use remote access to copy information, install malware, alter settings, or charge for nonexistent support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A link, attachment, or contact route supplied by the alert

Messages about a supposed refund, subscription renewal, account lockout, or security incident often direct you to a login page or a phone number controlled by the sender. The page may copy a real brand. Do not use the message’s link or contact details to investigate the claim. Navigate independently instead.

Impersonation that feels familiar

Caller ID can be spoofed, email addresses can be made to look plausible, and logos can be copied. A local-looking number, correct spelling, familiar branding, or a voice that sounds like someone you know cannot authenticate the sender. Spelling mistakes or an unusual address can be useful clues, but their absence is not evidence of legitimacy.

Do not try to identify AI from style alone

The FTC and Microsoft do not establish a consumer method that can reliably label a warning as AI-generated by inspecting its prose, image, audio, or video. Do not rely on an “AI detector,” grammatical perfection, an accent, a pause in a voice, image glitches, or the presence of a logo. Those features can produce false reassurance or false alarms.

Use AI-specific awareness in a narrower way: a convincing presentation may be copied, so authenticate the person or organization through a channel the message did not provide. If a caller claims to be a colleague, family member, bank, or vendor, end the contact and use a previously trusted number or an established internal directory entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A safe verification sequence

  1. Stop interacting. Do not call, click, reply, download, pay, type credentials, or approve a remote session. Leave the warning on screen without following its instructions.
  2. Record only what you need. If safe, note the claimed company, account, date, and visible transaction. Do not copy a suspicious link into a browser or forward a malicious attachment. A screenshot can help with reporting, but do not keep interacting to collect evidence.
  3. Reach the organization independently. Open its official app from a device or shortcut you already trust, or type a known official web address yourself. For a phone call, use a number already saved from a genuine statement or product documentation, or a number published on the official site you reached independently. Never use the number in the alert.
  4. Check the actual status. Look for the supposed charge, case, account notice, or device warning inside that official channel. If nothing appears there, the alert’s claim is unsubstantiated. Do not buy a product or service merely because a pop-up says a scan found a problem.
  5. Scan if the device may really be compromised. Update the security software already installed on the device, then run a scan using its normal interface. A scan is a sensible health check; it does not authenticate the pop-up or prove that the caller’s proposed fix is safe.
  6. Use a separate route for personal requests. For an unexpected request from a colleague, customer, family member, or supplier, call a previously known number or start a new conversation in the organization’s normal system. For a business payment or bank-detail change, follow your existing approval process and require confirmation from a second trusted person.
  7. Ask someone you trust to review the situation. Fear and time pressure make mistakes more likely. A friend, family member, IT administrator, or established technician can help you check the claim without using the alert’s instructions.

How to judge the request, not its polish

These four axes help you decide how to proceed. They are practical risk questions, not a numerical scam score.

Question Lower-risk pattern High-risk pattern What to do
Where did verification come from? You opened the official app or site yourself and found the same notice. The alert supplies the only link, number, QR code, or contact person. Discard the supplied route and start from a known-good channel.
What action is requested? You are asked to review a status passively in your existing account. You are asked for money, passwords, one-time codes, remote access, software installation, or unrelated personal data. Do not provide the requested information or access. Verify first.
How much time are you given? You can close the message and investigate later. You are threatened with immediate loss, arrest, deletion, or account closure. End the interaction and take the time to verify independently.
Who initiated contact? You started support through a published channel. An unknown caller, pop-up, text, or email starts the conversation. Assume the contact is untrusted until independently confirmed.

Why a convincing alert can still be dangerous

Scammers deliberately combine several persuasive elements: a familiar brand, a precise-looking case number, a current-looking date, a local caller ID, and a countdown. None of those elements establishes that the organization contacted you. AI can make the combination faster and more natural, but ordinary fraud techniques can produce the same appearance.

Pay special attention to the boundary between checking and surrendering control. Opening your account through an app you selected yourself is a check. Giving an unknown caller a one-time code, allowing screen control, or installing a new “security” program gives the caller a way to act as you. Even if the caller correctly knows your name, email address, device model, or a recent purchase, verify separately.

What to do in common situations

Browser pop-up or full-screen warning

Do not call the displayed number or click buttons such as “clean,” “renew,” or “unlock.” Close the browser tab or window using its normal controls. If it will not close, use the operating system’s normal app-quit method rather than interacting with the warning. Reopen the browser without restoring the suspicious page, update your existing security software, and run a scan. If the browser repeatedly returns to the page, remove unfamiliar extensions, review recently installed software, and ask a trusted technician for help. Do not install a “support” tool advertised by the pop-up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Email or text message

Do not use the embedded link, attachment, reply address, or phone number. Open the company’s app or type its web address manually and check for the claimed event. If the message concerns a payment, compare it with your bank or card issuer’s independently accessed account. Report the message using the mail or messaging service’s built-in reporting option when available, then delete it.

Phone or video call

Tell the caller you will contact the organization through a known number and end the call. Never install remote-control software at an unsolicited caller’s direction. Do not read back passwords, verification codes, card numbers, or recovery phrases. A modified voice can sound like a real support agent or someone you know; voice familiarity is not authentication.

Business request from a familiar person

Use an internal directory, a previously stored number, or a new message in your normal collaboration system. Follow a two-person approval rule for payments, bank-account changes, gift cards, or urgent wire requests. Do not “confirm” by replying to the suspicious email, because the sender controls that conversation.

Do not let a scan become a sales pitch

If you are worried about malware, use security software already installed and updated on the device, or contact a technician you choose through a trusted route. A pop-up’s claim that it found dozens of threats is not proof that a paid cleanup, antivirus subscription, or remote service is needed. Do not download a tool solely because the warning recommends it, and do not provide payment details to make the warning disappear. A genuine scan result should be reviewed in the security product’s normal interface or through support that you reached independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the official channel does not show the alert

An absent notice is useful information, but it is not a reason to keep arguing with the sender. Close the message, block or report the contact where appropriate, and continue monitoring the real account. If the issue concerns a work system, tell the help desk even when the message was false; the organization may need to warn other employees or investigate the sender.

If you already shared information or allowed access

Password or one-time code disclosed

Change the password immediately from a clean, independently reached account page. Change it anywhere else it was reused, and make each replacement unique. Review recovery email addresses, phone numbers, active sessions, forwarding rules, and multifactor-authentication devices. If you cannot sign in, use the provider’s official account-recovery process, not a link supplied by the scammer.

Remote access granted or malware suspected

Disconnect the affected device from Wi-Fi and wired networks to limit further access. Do not use it for banking or work until a trusted security professional or your organization’s incident-response team advises you. A business may have specific procedures, including preserving a powered-on device while isolating it; follow those procedures rather than improvising. From a separate clean device, change credentials that may have been exposed and tell your IT administrator.

Payment information shared or money sent

Contact the bank, card issuer, payment service, or transfer provider promptly using a number from a genuine statement or its official app. Ask whether a transfer can be recalled, a card replaced, or a fraudulent charge disputed. Monitor statements and account alerts for additional activity. Do not pay a second company that promises to recover the first payment; recovery scams often follow an initial loss.

Personal documents or identity data disclosed

Tell the affected organization, secure the account, and monitor for new-account or password-reset activity. The exact protective steps depend on the information and your country. Keep a record of dates, numbers, addresses, and transactions for your bank, employer, insurer, or law-enforcement report.

Reporting and getting help

In the United States, consumers can report tech-support scams to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC’s small-business guidance also lists [email protected] for phishing emails and recommends notifying the organization being impersonated. Your country may use different reporting bodies and procedures; check the relevant government or financial regulator rather than assuming US routes apply.

Reporting cannot undo every loss, but it can help providers block numbers, domains, accounts, and payment destinations. Preserve the original message, headers where available, screenshots, payment records, and a timeline without reopening unsafe links or files.

When a warning might still indicate a real problem

A scam warning can coexist with a genuine device issue. Slow performance, unexpected sign-ins, unfamiliar browser extensions, or security software detections deserve attention, but none of them validates an unsolicited caller’s instructions. Use the device’s existing security tools, the manufacturer’s independently reached support page, or a technician you selected yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an account alert, sign in through the official app or manually entered address and inspect recent activity. For a work device, notify the organization’s IT or security team through its established help desk. The central distinction is control of the verification path: you choose where to check, rather than allowing the alarming message to choose for you.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI detector tell me whether a security alert is fake?

Not reliably. The available official guidance does not establish a consumer detector that can authenticate an email, image, voice, video, or pop-up. A detector result should never override an independent check of the account or device.

Should I call the number in a virus warning?

No. Real security pop-up warnings do not ask you to call a phone number, and genuine Microsoft error messages never include one. Close the warning and reach the provider through its official app, website, or a number you already know is genuine.

What if the caller knows information about me?

That information may have come from a data leak, public profile, previous conversation, or social engineering. End the call and contact the supposed organization or person through a separate, trusted route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a familiar voice proof that a support call is real?

No. Microsoft has described AI-modified voices used in impersonation. A familiar or natural-sounding voice is a reason to verify independently, not a credential.

What if the alert appears inside my real account?

Use the account’s normal navigation, not a link in a message, and inspect recent activity. If the notice requests a password, one-time code, payment, or remote access outside the normal process, contact the provider through its published support route.

Should I buy antivirus software after a pop-up warning?

Do not buy from the pop-up or from an unsolicited caller. Update and scan with security software you already trust, then seek help through an independently selected technician or the device maker’s official support page if concerns remain.

What should a small business do with an urgent payment request?

Pause the payment, use a known internal directory or vendor number, and follow the organization’s approval procedure. Require confirmation from a second trusted person for bank-detail changes, gift cards, wires, or other unusual requests.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How quickly should I act after sharing a password or payment detail?

Immediately. Change exposed passwords from a clean device, contact the bank or card issuer through a genuine channel, isolate a device that may have been accessed, and notify your IT or security team when applicable.

A compact checklist

  • Pause; do not obey the alert’s number, link, attachment, payment demand, or remote-access request.
  • Assume urgency and impersonation are warning signs, not proof of AI authorship.
  • Verify through an official app, manually entered website, or previously trusted phone number.
  • Check the account or device status there, and scan with existing security software if appropriate.
  • Use a separate trusted route for requests that appear to come from a person you know.
  • Change exposed passwords, contact financial institutions, isolate compromised devices, and report the incident.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI detector tell me whether a security alert is fake?

Not reliably. No consumer detector established by official guidance can authenticate an email, image, voice, video, or pop-up. Verify the account or device through an independent official channel instead.

Should I call the number in a virus warning?

No. Real security pop-up warnings do not ask you to call a phone number. Close the warning and use the provider’s official app, website, or a number you already know is genuine.

What if the alert appears inside my real account?

Navigate through the account’s normal app or website and inspect recent activity. Do not follow a message link or provide credentials, codes, payment, or remote access outside the normal process.

Should I buy antivirus software after a pop-up warning?

Do not buy from the pop-up or an unsolicited caller. Update and scan with security software you already trust, then seek independently selected technical help if needed.

How quickly should I act after sharing a password or payment detail?

Immediately. Change the password from a clean device, contact the bank or card issuer through a genuine channel, isolate a potentially accessed device, and notify IT when applicable.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: You do not need to determine whether a message was written or voiced by AI before deciding safely. Stop, reject the alert’s contact route, and verify the claimed problem through an official app, manually entered website, or previously trusted phone number. Never trade passwords, codes, money, or remote access for a warning’s promise of protection.
