How to Check Whether Your PC Can Run a Visually Demanding Action Game

Learn how to compare a Windows PC’s CPU, RAM, GPU, storage, DirectX version, and graphics features with a demanding action game’s minimum and recommended requirements.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To find out whether your PC can run a visually demanding action game, compare its exact hardware and software with the game’s current official minimum and recommended requirements. Check the processor, RAM, graphics card and its capabilities, storage, operating system, and any stated graphics API or shader requirements. A match to the minimum requirements is a compatibility baseline—not a promise of smooth play at your chosen resolution or visual settings.

Can my PC run this game? Check three separate questions

“Can it run?” can mean that the game will launch, that your PC meets the developer’s listed specifications, or that it will play smoothly at the settings you want. Those are different questions, and a system-requirements comparison cannot answer all three with a single yes or no.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Will it launch? Check the required operating system and whether the graphics hardware supports the game’s required graphics features.
  • Does it meet the listed specifications? Compare your actual components with the game’s minimum and recommended configurations, item by item.
  • Will it feel smooth at your settings? That depends on the particular game, resolution, graphics settings, drivers, GPU implementation, and the rest of the system. Requirements alone do not establish a specific frame rate.

Because no particular game is named here, there is no valid game-specific pass/fail verdict or hardware threshold to give. Start with the title you want to play and its current official requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It helps to keep these questions separate as you check. A PC can satisfy a listed minimum without meeting the recommended configuration. It can also launch a game while struggling to maintain the visual quality or smoothness you want. Conversely, a single item that looks different from the listed model may not tell the whole story unless you confirm its actual capabilities and the game’s stated requirements.

Find the game’s official requirements

Open the game developer or publisher’s current system-requirements page. Record both the minimum and recommended specifications. If the game’s official page does not give a detail—such as graphics memory—do not infer a target from another game or from a generic rule of thumb.

Requirement What to record from the game page What to check on your PC
Operating system Required Windows version or other stated OS Your installed operating system and version
Processor Listed CPU model or requirement Your exact CPU model
Memory Required system RAM Installed RAM
Graphics Listed GPU model and any stated feature requirements Exact graphics-card model and supported capabilities
Graphics memory VRAM requirement, if the game states one Available graphics memory for the identified GPU
Storage Required space and any stated drive type Free space and storage type
Graphics API or shader features Any DirectX, feature-level, or shader requirement Installed DirectX version and whether the GPU supports the required features

Requirements can change, so check the game’s current page rather than relying on an old listing. Pay attention to whether a page specifies a particular resolution or quality target; a recommended configuration is a more useful starting point for a demanding game than the minimum, but it still does not promise a particular frame rate.

When you take notes, preserve the labels and wording used by the developer. For example, keep a requirement listed as minimum separate from one listed as recommended, and note whether the page ties a specification to a stated resolution or visual preset. A list of component names without that context can make it easy to overstate what a configuration is expected to do.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check each category rather than treating the GPU as the entire answer. The game may specify an operating system, CPU, amount of system memory, storage space or type, as well as graphics hardware and features. A strong graphics card cannot on its own answer whether the system meets a separate OS, processor, memory, or storage requirement.

How to check your PC’s hardware in Windows

Use Windows’ built-in views to identify the components you will compare. If a device name is unclear or abbreviated, verify the exact model with the computer or component manufacturer before drawing a conclusion.

  1. Find your CPU and installed memory. Open Start, search for System Information, and open it. Check the processor and installed physical memory entries. You can also open Task Manager and select Performance to inspect CPU and memory.
  2. Identify the graphics processor. In Task Manager, open Performance and select the GPU entries to see their names. Record the full model, not just a broad label such as “integrated graphics” or a GPU family. If the PC lists more than one GPU, note each one; the game’s use of a particular adapter can matter.
  3. Check storage and available space. In File Explorer, open This PC to see the drives and their free space. To establish whether a drive is an SSD or another type, check the drive information in Windows or confirm it from the PC manufacturer. Compare the result with the game’s stated storage requirement.
  4. Confirm the Windows version. Open Settings and go to System > About to see Windows specifications, including the version. Compare that with the game’s required operating system.
  5. Keep a simple inventory. Write down the OS/version, CPU, RAM, GPU model, VRAM if shown, storage type, and free space. This prevents comparing the game’s listed components with assumptions about your PC.

System Information and Task Manager are convenient ways to inspect installed hardware, but a displayed GPU name is not by itself proof that the GPU supports every feature a game needs. If the model is uncertain, verify it against the manufacturer’s information.

Take care not to confuse installed system memory with graphics memory. RAM is the PC’s system memory; VRAM is associated with the graphics processor. Record both when the game lists both, but do not invent a VRAM target when the official requirements do not state one. If Windows displays multiple graphics adapters, note the exact names rather than assuming that the first or most familiar label tells you which capabilities will matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage checks have two separate parts: available space and drive type. Make sure the PC has enough free space for the game’s stated requirement, and check whether the page calls for a particular kind of drive. A drive with enough capacity does not automatically meet a separate drive-type requirement.

Before comparing, make sure the details refer to the PC you intend to play on. If you are checking a laptop, a prebuilt system, or a PC with more than one graphics adapter, use its installed component information rather than assuming it has the same configuration as another model with a similar product name.

Check DirectX, then check the GPU’s actual features

On Windows, Microsoft’s documented method for checking the installed DirectX version is to search Start for dxdiag, open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, and select its System tab. Microsoft Support’s instruction is: “In the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, select the System tab, then check the DirectX version under System Information.”

This tells you the DirectX version installed on the system. It does not prove that the graphics card supports every DirectX feature, feature level, or shader model a particular game requires, and it says nothing conclusive about performance. Steam Support notes that a video card can meet a game’s minimum DirectX requirement but still lack the required pixel shader level. Microsoft’s Direct3D documentation also distinguishes GPU feature-level support from performance, which depends on the hardware implementation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Therefore, compare the exact GPU model with the game’s stated graphics requirement and any stated feature-level or shader requirement. Do not rank or approve graphics cards from a DirectX version alone. Integrated and discrete GPUs should not be treated as equivalent simply because their names appear similar or both report the same DirectX version.

Think of the dxdiag result as one line in your inventory, not a final compatibility stamp. If the game names a particular shader or feature level, check whether the exact graphics processor supports that capability using the GPU manufacturer’s information. If the developer only lists a GPU model and a DirectX requirement, compare those specific details instead of guessing at an unstated shader threshold.

There are two different things to establish: whether the PC has an installed DirectX version that meets a stated requirement, and whether its GPU implements the graphics features the game actually needs. A DirectX-version match answers only the first kind of question. Even when both software and feature requirements are met, that still does not establish how quickly the game will run.

Compare minimum and recommended requirements separately

Make two comparisons rather than blending the game’s minimum and recommended columns into one general judgment. A PC that is below a listed minimum has a likely compatibility or performance shortfall for that specification. A PC that meets minimum but falls short of recommended may still run the game, but lower resolution or less demanding visual settings may be necessary. Neither comparison, by itself, predicts a guaranteed frame rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • At or above recommended: This is the more useful starting point for a visually demanding game, but it is not a performance guarantee. The game’s requirements and your target resolution and quality settings still matter.
  • Between minimum and recommended: Treat playability at your preferred settings as uncertain. Be prepared to reduce demanding graphics options or resolution, then assess the result in the game.
  • Below minimum on an important component: Expect a greater risk that the game will not launch correctly or will perform poorly. Check the exact component and feature requirements before deciding what, if anything, needs to change.

These are decision categories, not promises about what a particular game will do. Developers may test or describe configurations differently, and game behavior varies across PC hardware. Microsoft notes that graphics settings and available physical memory can affect how well video memory is used.

Read a shortfall literally. If your CPU is below a listed requirement, that is a CPU mismatch to investigate; it does not automatically tell you the result of every other comparison. The same applies to RAM, storage, OS, GPU, and graphics features. Mark each line as meeting minimum, meeting recommended, falling between them, or below the listed baseline, then consider the overall picture without turning one match into a broad performance claim.

A PC that meets recommended specifications is not guaranteed to run every scene at the same smoothness or visual quality. The listed configuration is a starting point, while the actual experience also depends on the game’s implementation, target resolution, settings, drivers, and the hardware as a whole. The available specification list cannot support a precise frame-rate forecast unless there is reliable, comparable evidence for the particular game and PC.

Assess likely performance for your resolution and settings

To judge whether a PC can deliver the experience you want, define that experience first: the target resolution and the graphics quality you intend to use. A requirements page may name a configuration without establishing what it will achieve at every resolution or setting. Do not convert a “recommended” label into an unsupported frame-rate estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are comparing two PCs or two graphics cards, use the exact GPU models and compare the game’s minimum/recommended status, GPU features, VRAM, system memory, CPU, storage requirements, and intended resolution and quality. When published, benchmarks for the same game at similar settings and resolution on a comparable configuration are more informative than a DirectX-version comparison. Treat a benchmark as evidence for its stated publisher, date, and test configuration—not as a guarantee for a different PC.

For a useful comparison, match like with like as closely as possible. A benchmark for another game, a different resolution, or substantially different quality settings may not answer the question you are asking. Check who published the benchmark, when it was published, and which configuration was tested. If those details are missing or the test system differs significantly from yours, treat the result cautiously rather than presenting it as a direct prediction.

Do not use a GPU’s DirectX version as a shortcut for ranking two cards. Supported features matter for compatibility, but feature support alone does not show how fast a particular card performs. Likewise, a similar GPU label is not sufficient evidence that two models are interchangeable. Exact model, implementation, memory, target settings, and comparable game-specific benchmark evidence all matter.

Drivers are another reason a requirements comparison is not a performance guarantee. They can affect the way a game runs, but the component list alone does not establish the effect of a particular driver or configuration. Avoid turning a requirements table into a numerical prediction without game- and system-specific evidence.

If the game is installed, test at your target settings

When the game launches, the most relevant check for your own experience is how it performs on your PC at the resolution and graphics settings you plan to use. Start with an appropriate preset, play a representative section, and reduce the most demanding graphics options or resolution if performance is inadequate. A launch confirms only that the game started; it does not establish smoothness throughout the game or at higher settings.

Keep the changes specific and reversible: adjust one or a small group of visual options, check the result, and continue until the experience is acceptable. The outcome applies to that game, that system, and those settings. A requirement comparison or test in one title should not be generalized to another game.

It is useful to test against the experience you actually want rather than an arbitrary preset. If you intend to play at a particular resolution, use it during the check. If the result is not satisfactory, try reducing demanding visual options or resolution and assess again. This tells you whether a change improves your own experience, but it does not create a universal rating for the PC or establish that the same settings will suit every game.

Record the settings that worked, especially if you compare results after making changes. A successful launch at low settings and a satisfactory experience at your desired quality are different outcomes. Be precise about which one you observed, and do not assume that a short test settles performance in every part of the game.

Check optional storage and graphics features only when the game calls for them

Some games may state a feature requirement beyond ordinary storage capacity and a basic graphics API version. DirectStorage is one example, but it should not be assumed necessary for every game. Microsoft documents prerequisites for DirectStorage as an NVMe SSD, a DirectX 12 GPU, and Shader Model 6.0 support. Check whether the selected game actually uses or requires the feature before treating those prerequisites as a condition for playing it.

This distinction prevents an optional or game-specific technology from becoming a blanket PC requirement. If the game’s official page does not say that it uses or requires DirectStorage, do not apply DirectStorage’s prerequisites as if every visually demanding game needed them. If it does state the feature, compare the listed prerequisites with the PC and keep that check separate from the game’s ordinary capacity and storage-space requirements.

Common mistakes that lead to a wrong answer

  • Using the DirectX version as a complete GPU test. It is only one system detail; check the GPU model and the game’s shader or feature-level requirements too.
  • Reading minimum as “smooth at high settings.” Minimum is a baseline, not a promise of smooth play at your preferred resolution or quality.
  • Assuming a similar GPU name means similar capability. Confirm the exact model and its supported features, especially when the PC has integrated and discrete graphics.
  • Ignoring the rest of the system. CPU, RAM, storage, OS, VRAM, and the game’s own requirements all belong in the comparison.
  • Confusing a successful launch with a performance verdict. Check the game under the settings you actually want to use.
  • Applying a feature requirement to every game. Optional technologies such as DirectStorage matter only where the selected game uses or requires them.
  • Using a generic hardware rule instead of the game’s own list. Requirements differ by title. Compare the current official specifications for the game you want to play.
  • Treating one benchmark as a guarantee. Check its game, resolution, visual settings, test configuration, publisher, and date before using it to inform a comparison.
  • Conflating RAM and VRAM. They are different entries in the comparison; note what the game actually specifies for each.
  • Assuming drive capacity answers every storage question. Check both free space and any drive-type requirement the game states.

A final checklist before you decide

Before deciding whether your PC is a likely fit, make sure you have the correct game’s current official requirements and your PC’s exact component names. Compare minimum and recommended requirements separately. Confirm OS, CPU, RAM, GPU, stated VRAM, storage space and type, and any graphics API, feature-level, or shader details the developer lists.

Use dxdiag for the installed DirectX version, but do not mistake that result for proof of GPU feature support or performance. If the game is installed, test it at the resolution and settings you want, then adjust demanding options or resolution if needed. If a specific item remains unclear, verify it with the relevant PC or component manufacturer rather than inferring a pass from a broad label.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check if my PC can run a game?

Find the game’s current official system requirements, then compare its minimum and recommended OS, CPU, RAM, GPU, stated VRAM, storage, and graphics-feature requirements with your PC’s exact specifications. In Windows, System Information and Task Manager’s Performance view can help identify installed hardware. Treat a requirements match as guidance about compatibility and configuration, not a guaranteed frame rate.

Does meeting a game’s minimum requirements mean it will run smoothly?

No. Minimum requirements are a compatibility baseline, not a promise of smooth play at high resolution or quality settings. Recommended specifications are a more useful starting point for a demanding game, but they still do not guarantee a particular frame rate. Your target settings, GPU implementation, drivers, and the rest of the system can affect performance.

Is checking my DirectX version enough to know if a game will run?

No. Microsoft’s DirectX Diagnostic Tool reports the installed DirectX version on its System tab, but this does not prove that the GPU supports every feature, feature level, or shader the game needs. Steam Support notes that a card can meet a minimum DirectX requirement and still lack a required pixel shader level. Compare the exact GPU and any feature requirements too.

How can I check my DirectX version in Windows?

Search Start for dxdiag, open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, and select the System tab. Microsoft Support says to check the DirectX version under System Information on that tab. This is one data point in your comparison, not a complete GPU capability or performance test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are integrated and discrete graphics equivalent if they show the same DirectX version?

Do not assume they are. Identify the exact GPU model and compare its supported capabilities with the game’s stated graphics, feature-level, or shader requirements. A DirectX-version match alone does not show that two GPUs have equivalent capabilities or performance.

Should I upgrade my PC if it falls below a listed requirement?

First identify exactly which requirement is not met and whether it is a minimum, recommended, or game-specific feature requirement. A mismatch signals a reason to investigate, but the requirements alone do not establish which upgrade is necessary or guarantee that a particular change will solve the issue. A specific recommendation needs the game title and your exact configuration.

Does every demanding game require DirectStorage or an NVMe SSD?

No. DirectStorage should be treated as a requirement only if the selected game says it uses or requires it. Microsoft documents DirectStorage prerequisites as an NVMe SSD, a DirectX 12 GPU, and Shader Model 6.0 support, but those conditions should not be generalized to every game.

What is the best way to compare two graphics cards for a game?

Compare exact GPU models and the game’s minimum and recommended status, supported graphics features, stated VRAM needs, and your intended resolution and quality settings. If benchmarks are available, look for the same game at similar settings and resolution on a comparable configuration, and check the publisher and date. A DirectX-version comparison by itself is not enough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

To answer “Can my PC run this game?”, use the game’s current official requirements and compare them with your exact PC specifications, minimum and recommended lists kept separate. Check the GPU’s actual required features as well as the installed DirectX version. Minimum is not a promise of smooth play, and even recommended specifications do not guarantee a frame rate. If the game is installed, test it at your target resolution and settings and adjust demanding options if needed.
