How to Tell Whether a VPN Kill Switch Is Blocking Windows 11 Internet at Startup

A VPN kill switch can block internet traffic without disconnecting Wi-Fi. Check Windows’ network status first, then troubleshoot the VPN or wireless adapter based on the actual symptom.

A VPN kill switch can block internet traffic when its VPN tunnel is unavailable, but that does not necessarily mean Windows 11 has dropped its Wi-Fi connection. First check whether Windows is still connected to the wireless network: “connected to Wi-Fi, no internet” points toward a traffic or VPN problem, while an actual Wi-Fi disconnection calls for checking the wireless adapter, driver, radio, or access point too.

Is Wi-Fi disconnecting, or is the internet being blocked?

“Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting on startup” can describe two different failures. Windows may lose its connection to the access point, or it may stay connected to Wi-Fi while internet traffic fails. Check the network status in the taskbar and open Windows’ Wi-Fi settings to see whether the target network is still shown as connected. Also note whether the VPN client says it is connected, reconnecting, or disconnected.

Wi-Fi says disconnected, or the network is no longer connected The wireless link may be failing; a kill switch alone does not establish why Wi-Fi disconnected. Wi-Fi settings, wireless radio or physical switch, adapter capabilities, recent driver or firmware changes, and the access point.
Wi-Fi remains connected, but apps cannot reach the internet A traffic block or routing problem is possible. Microsoft notes that when Windows shows Wi-Fi connected but connectivity fails, an app or firewall may be involved. Internet becomes available when the VPN connects This is consistent with traffic being blocked while the VPN tunnel is unavailable, though it does not prove that the kill switch is the cause. Whether the VPN reports a tunnel connection and the provider’s guidance for its specific kill switch.

Microsoft recommends starting Windows 11 Wi-Fi troubleshooting with the automated Network and Internet troubleshooter in Get Help. Confirm Wi-Fi is enabled, any physical wireless switch is on, and the adapter supports the frequency used by the network. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi connection guidance explains the initial checks.

How a VPN kill switch can affect internet access

A kill switch is designed to prevent traffic from leaving outside the VPN under specified conditions. For example, NordVPN says its Windows Internet Kill Switch cuts off internet access when the device is disconnected from NordVPN servers. Its separate App Kill Switch closes selected applications when VPN protection is lost and is off by default. Those are different features and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Proton VPN likewise describes its kill switch as blocking internet traffic if the VPN connection drops. Its advanced kill switch allows internet access only while connected to Proton VPN; Proton notes that this mode can also prevent access to devices on the local network. Behavior and settings differ by provider and app version, so use the provider’s current instructions rather than assuming every kill switch works the same way.

What to check when Wi-Fi is connected but there is no internet after boot

  1. Record the status before changing settings. Note the time, Windows’ network status, whether the Wi-Fi network remains connected, and the VPN app’s connection message. This helps distinguish a wireless-link failure from a traffic block.
  2. Run the Windows 11 initial check. Open Get Help and run the Network and Internet troubleshooter. Confirm Wi-Fi is enabled and check for a hardware wireless switch if the computer has one.
  3. Inspect the VPN state. Check whether the VPN app has started and whether it reports that a tunnel is connected. Consult that provider’s guidance for its kill switch and connection problems.
  4. Use a temporary isolation test only if you understand the trade-off. Briefly disconnect the VPN or disable its kill switch to see whether ordinary internet access returns. This removes the kill switch’s traffic-blocking protection during the test; it is not a general recommendation to leave the protection off.

NordVPN’s published Windows troubleshooting steps advise checking for an app update, trying its recommended automatic protocol selection, and restarting, with a connectivity check after each step. Follow the current steps and labels in the provider’s own app and documentation; do not assume another VPN uses the same controls. NordVPN’s Windows connection guidance describes its process.

What to do if Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting on startup

If Windows reports that the wireless network itself has disconnected, troubleshoot the wireless link rather than attributing the symptom to a kill switch. Check that Wi-Fi is enabled, the radio is not disabled by a physical switch, and the adapter supports the network’s frequency. Consider whether the problem began after a Windows update, wireless-driver or firmware change, VPN installation, profile change, or access-point change.

Before deleting a Wi-Fi profile, removing an adapter or driver, resetting the network stack, or restarting, record the current state and the time the problem occurs. Microsoft’s technical guidance recommends capturing this baseline and noting relevant changes so that troubleshooting does not erase evidence about what changed. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance for IT professionals covers this diagnostic approach.

A USB Wi-Fi adapter is only relevant if Windows or the computer maker’s diagnostics point to an unsupported or failing built-in adapter. It will not fix a kill switch that is blocking internet traffic while the VPN tunnel is unavailable.

Should you reset Windows network settings?

Do not use a network reset as an unexplained first step. NordVPN warns that its network reset removes previously used Wi-Fi networks and passwords, as well as VPN and APN settings. Try status checks, Windows’ troubleshooter, and the relevant VPN provider’s lower-impact guidance first. If you do use a reset, make sure you can restore the saved network and VPN configuration afterward.

Does a restart cause a Windows 11 VPN startup race?

Boot timing is a useful clue, not proof of a general Windows 11 startup race. Note whether Wi-Fi remains associated throughout, whether internet access returns once the VPN connects, and what the VPN app reports at each point. The published guidance from the named providers describes kill-switch behavior and reconnection behavior, but does not establish a universal startup conflict across VPN products.

Proton VPN says its Windows app attempts to reconnect to the last VPN server after an accidental disconnection. It also says that after events such as a major Windows update or reset, hardware change, or BIOS update, users with its advanced kill switch enabled may need to sign back into Windows after powering on. These are Proton-specific qualifications, not evidence that all VPNs or Windows 11 devices behave alike. Proton VPN’s kill-switch guidance explains its feature, and its advanced kill-switch guidance describes the stricter mode and related startup caveat.
