Start with the game’s store page: on Steam, look for its AI Generated Content Disclosure. Then check what the developer says the disclosure covers and compare it with dated developer statements, update notes, credits, or official support material. A disclosure is useful evidence, not independent verification of every asset; no disclosure does not prove that a game used no AI.
How can you check whether a game uses AI-generated content?
- Check the store page. On Steam, find the AI Generated Content Disclosure associated with the game’s store page. Steam asks developers to disclose AI-created content that ships with a game and is consumed by players, including artwork, sound, narrative, and localization. Steamworks Content Survey
- See whether the disclosure means pre-generated or live-generated content. Steam uses “Pre-Generated” for content created during development and included in the shipped game. “Live-Generated” means content created by AI while the game is running; Steam asks developers to describe guardrails against illegal outputs. Steamworks Content Survey
- Read the scope, not just the label. Steam says the disclosure section focuses on AI-created content that ships with the game and is consumed by players—not efficiency gains from AI-powered development tools. A label therefore is not a complete inventory of every AI tool used behind the scenes. Steamworks Content Survey
- Look for corroboration. Check for a named developer or publisher statement, dated update notes, credits, or official support material. If the question is about a particular image, voice line, or passage, look for evidence tied to that specific content rather than relying on a general claim or rumor.
What does an AI disclosure actually establish?
A disclosure establishes what the developer has reported within the store’s stated scope. It does not independently authenticate every asset, explain how much AI contributed, or necessarily mean that the game as a whole is “AI-generated.” For example, a statement about one piece of artwork supports a claim about that artwork—not every visual, line of dialogue, or sound in the game.

Steam says its prerelease review evaluates AI-generated output under the same rules as non-AI content. The disclosure and review process is not a public forensic certificate for each asset. Steamworks Content Survey
Does no disclosure mean a game has no AI-generated content?
No. A missing label is inconclusive: it may reflect the storefront’s rules and disclosure scope, and it cannot prove that no AI was used. Store policies differ. A UK Parliament Commons Library briefing dated January 20, 2026, reported that Steam required disclosure of pre-generated or live-generated AI content, while Epic Games Store did not require a similar developer disclosure at that time. Because policies can change, check the store’s current requirements before comparing games. UK Parliament Commons Library briefing

Can you recognize AI-generated game art by looking at it?
Visual oddities or suspicious-looking details can be a reason to investigate, but they are not proof. The available policy and reporting sources do not establish a reliable visual checklist or detector that conclusively authenticates a game’s assets. Treat a visual judgment as a suspicion unless it is supported by a developer statement or other traceable evidence. Flockbay’s analysis of Steam AI disclosures
How to compare claims about two games
Use the same questions for each game so that a narrow label is not mistaken for a broad claim:
- Storefront and date: Which store is involved, and what policy applied when the page or statement was checked?
- Generation timing: Is the disclosed content pre-generated and shipped with the game, or created live during play?
- Content type: Does the claim concern visuals, audio, writing, localization, or another specific element?
- Evidence type: Is it a store disclosure, an official developer statement, or an inference based on appearance or rumor?
- Claim scope: Does the evidence identify a particular asset, or merely say that AI was used?
What do Steam disclosure figures tell you?
Flockbay reported that 35.04% of its sampled January–August 2026 Steam releases carried an AI disclosure. Its analysis covered a seeded random sample of 16,968 store pages out of 62,612 games released on Steam since July 1, 2023; the figures were as of August 26, 2026. These figures describe disclosures in a sample, not the share of all games that actually used AI. Flockbay also cautions that its data does not measure undisclosed use, the amount of AI in any game, or whether a disclosure concerns in-game material rather than store-page marketing.
