Neither Cardano nor Solana is the better choice for every use case. Cardano’s eUTXO ledger and transaction-fee rules suit applications that prioritize explicit inputs and predictable transaction effects; Solana’s account-and-program model and signature-based base fee suit applications designed around its account and instruction flow. Your best fit depends on how your application handles state, fees, failed transactions, staking, and governance—not on a chain-wide speed or cost slogan.
What is the difference between Cardano and Solana?
| Comparison | Cardano | Solana |
|---|---|---|
| Ledger and transaction model | Extended unspent transaction outputs (eUTXO): transactions consume specified outputs and create new ones. | State is stored in accounts; programs are called through instructions assembled into atomic transactions. |
| Fee design | Minimum fees depend on transaction size and protocol parameters; script execution and reference scripts can add costs. | A base fee is charged per signature, with an optional priority fee based on requested compute units. |
| Staking | ADA holders delegate to stake pools. | SOL holders delegate to validators. |
| Governance evidence | Cardano’s official explainer describes on-chain decisions about rules, upgrades, and treasury matters since 2025, involving ADA holders, stake pool operators, and an elected committee. | The Solana sources covered here do not provide an equivalent full governance overview, so this is not a like-for-like comparison. |
How the transaction models affect application design
Cardano: build around explicit inputs and outputs
A Cardano transaction names the unspent outputs it consumes and specifies the outputs it creates. Cardano documentation emphasizes that applying a transaction in the eUTXO model is deterministic. For a developer, that makes transaction construction and validation central design concerns: determine the inputs, calculate the outputs, and account for scripts before submission.

Solana: compose instructions around accounts
On Solana, state lives in accounts, and programs operate on accounts passed to their instructions. A transaction can combine instructions into one atomic operation. Developers therefore need to design around which accounts each instruction reads or changes, how instructions fit together, and how much computation the transaction requests.

These are different ways to model state and assemble work, not proof that one architecture is universally superior. Prototype the application’s actual state changes and transaction flow on each network before choosing.

Cardano vs. Solana fees: what to model
Cardano fee components
Cardano’s minimum-fee calculation depends on transaction size and protocol parameters that can change. Script execution fees and reference-script costs can also apply. A transfer without scripts and a script-driven application transaction therefore should not be assumed to have the same cost.
Solana base and priority fees
Solana’s cited fee documentation lists a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature. It says 50% of the base fee is burned; an optional prioritization fee goes to the validator. The priority fee is based on requested compute units. These are documented settings, not a guarantee of the cost of every future transaction.

Solana’s documentation also says fees are collected when a transaction fails. Include failure cases in cost estimates, rather than counting only successful operations. A separate fee payer can be used in sponsorship arrangements, although the base fee is still denominated in SOL.

- For Cardano, include transaction size and any applicable script or reference-script costs.
- For Solana, count signatures, requested compute units, any priority fee, and transactions that may fail.
- For either network, verify the current parameters and estimate the complete application flow; a single headline fee does not establish which network will be cheaper for your workload.
What staking involves on each network
Delegation lets holders participate through network operators, but the operator and reward conditions differ. Cardano says delegated ADA remains under the holder’s wallet control. On Solana, staking rewards are not guaranteed: its documentation identifies inflation, total stake, validator uptime, and validator commission as factors. It also advises users to do their own diligence and says the Solana Foundation does not recommend a particular validator.

Compare the specific pool or validator’s terms, commission, and operating record, as well as the wallet and delegation flow you intend to use. Solana’s staking documentation says command-line stake operations can be performed with a connected Ledger Nano, but device support should be checked for the particular network and workflow; a hardware wallet is not a prerequisite established here.
Governance, proof of stake, and performance claims
Cardano’s official explainer describes its on-chain governance process for network rules, upgrades, and treasury decisions since 2025. The material available for Solana here does not support a complete governance comparison, so readers weighing governance should consult current, equivalent documentation for both networks.

Both networks are proof-of-stake networks. Solana’s Proof of History (PoH) is described as a sequence of computation that helps verify the passage of time between events; it is a timing and ordering mechanism within Solana’s architecture, not a replacement for proof of stake. Cardano’s documentation describes Ouroboros proof of stake, as well as slots and epochs. Those architectural descriptions alone do not establish a head-to-head confirmation-time result.

Solana’s 2018 whitepaper discussed throughput of up to 710,000 transactions per second under stated hardware and network assumptions. That proposal-era figure is not a current measured mainnet result. The sources cited for this comparison do not provide comparable independent current measurements of throughput, uptime, decentralization, adoption, or developer ecosystem size, so none of those is a sound basis here for declaring a winner.

Which network fits your use case?
If you are building an application
Start with how your application represents state and constructs transactions. Test the full workflow, including script or program execution, validation, fee estimation, and what happens when an operation fails. Choose the network whose transaction model and tooling fit those requirements; do not decide from a generalized claim about speed.
If you are building payments or frequent transactions
Model the complete transaction flow, including who pays, the fee components involved, and expected failure paths. A sponsored Solana transaction can separate the fee payer from the user, while a Cardano estimate needs to account for transaction size and any scripts. Recheck network parameters as they can change.
If you mainly want to delegate tokens
Compare the pool or validator you would actually choose and the delegation, custody, and commission terms involved. Treat rewards as variable rather than promised returns.
