Treat the minimum tier as a publisher’s compatibility baseline, not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution, or graphics preset.
The label “turn-based” does not tell you whether a game is easy to run. A turn-based RPG may still use detailed 3D environments, advanced lighting, large textures, streaming worlds, or demanding visual effects. The exact edition, patch era, store version, and installation drive matter. Someone asking, “Can my computer run Baldur’s Gate 3?” (a common form of reader question) needs Baldur’s Gate 3’s requirements—not a rule about turn-based games in general.

Start with the exact game and its official requirements
Search for the publisher or developer’s current system-requirements page for the precise game you intend to buy. Use the requirements for the Windows edition and the current version offered by your store; do not substitute requirements from a console release, a different edition, an expansion, or another RPG. Store listings can be useful, but the developer’s support documentation should control when the two descriptions differ.
Record both requirement tiers exactly as written. “Minimum” and “recommended” are separate targets, not two ways of saying the same thing. A minimum list generally identifies the hardware the publisher considers a baseline for launching and playing under specified conditions. A recommended list is a higher target for the publisher’s stated quality level. If the page does not explain what either tier is intended to deliver, do not invent a frame-rate or resolution promise.

Make a requirement worksheet
Copy the following fields into a note before checking your computer. Keeping the model names, memory amounts, API version, and storage requirement together prevents a vague “my PC is fairly new” judgment.
- Supported Windows edition and version
- Required 32-bit or 64-bit system type
- Minimum and recommended processor models or families
- Minimum and recommended installed RAM
- Minimum and recommended graphics-card models
- Required graphics memory (VRAM), if listed
- Required graphics API, such as DirectX 11
- Free space and whether an SSD is required
Write down the date you checked the page. Requirements can change as a game is patched, and a listing may describe a different build from the one you are about to install.
Read the requirement categories correctly
Operating system and 64-bit support
Compare the game’s exact Windows requirement with both your Windows edition/version and the system type. Microsoft’s instructions show where Windows reports the edition, version, processor, installed RAM, and whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit: Find information about your Windows device. If a game requires a 64-bit operating system and your installation is 32-bit, a faster processor or graphics card does not remove that incompatibility. A game that lists a particular Windows version should be treated as unverified on an older or unsupported version unless the publisher says otherwise.

Processor
Compare the complete processor model or family, not only the advertised clock speed. Windows Settings > System > About reports the processor type. Clock frequency is not a reliable performance equivalent between unlike CPU generations: two chips with similar gigahertz ratings can have very different architectures, core counts, instruction support, and real-world performance. When the requirement names an Intel or AMD model, check your exact model against that line and label a near match as uncertain rather than automatically equivalent.
Installed memory (RAM)
Record the installed RAM shown in Settings > System > About and compare it with both requirement tiers. Do not confuse installed system memory with graphics memory. If the game lists 8 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended, those are different thresholds; having 12 GB is above the first number but below the second. Meeting a memory number also does not guarantee smooth play if the operating system and other running programs leave little memory available, so close unnecessary applications before testing.

Graphics card and VRAM
Identify the exact GPU model in DxDiag’s display information or Windows’ device/display settings. Compare that model with the game’s listed GPU families and check the VRAM threshold separately. A name that sounds newer or more powerful is not enough to prove equivalence, particularly when integrated graphics and discrete cards are mixed in the same product line.
If the computer has more than one GPU, determine which adapter the game will use. A laptop may expose both an integrated adapter and a discrete adapter; assuming the integrated one is active can make a capable system appear below requirements, while assuming the discrete one is active can produce the opposite mistake. Check the adapter selected for the game in the available Windows or driver graphics settings and verify it in the game’s diagnostics when possible.

Graphics API and DirectX
When the requirement specifies DirectX or another graphics API, compare the required version with the version reported by DxDiag. Microsoft explains how to open DxDiag and save a report in Which version of DirectX is on your PC?. Search Windows for dxdiag, open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, and read the DirectX Version entry on the System tab. You can select Save All Information… to create a text report for troubleshooting.
Microsoft Support cautions: “If your PC doesn’t have the right version of DirectX installed (the product box should tell you which one you need), your game might not work properly.”
An installed API version alone does not establish that every graphics feature required by the game is supported by your GPU. Treat the API check and the GPU/VRAM check as separate tests.

Storage capacity and storage type
Compare the game’s required free space with the free capacity on the drive where you will install it. Settings > System > Storage shows available capacity and can show other drives when the PC has more than one. Check the drive letter, not just the total capacity of the computer: a nearly full installation drive can fail even when another drive has room.

Leave additional working space for updates and temporary files rather than planning to fill the drive exactly to the listed number.
Find your PC’s information in Windows
Use this repeatable inventory procedure before buying. It produces the same categories that appear on most official requirement pages.
- Open Settings > System > About. Record the processor model, installed RAM, Windows edition/version, and system type (32-bit or 64-bit).
- Open Settings > System > Storage. Record free space on the intended installation drive. If the PC has multiple drives, note the capacity on each possible destination and whether the destination is an SSD.
- Search for “dxdiag” and open DirectX Diagnostic Tool. On the System tab, record the DirectX version. Choose Save All Information… if you need to share the report with support or inspect it later.
- Inspect the display information in DxDiag. Record each adapter’s exact GPU model and reported display-memory details. Check Windows or driver display settings as a second confirmation.
- Resolve multiple-adapter ambiguity. If more than one GPU appears, identify the adapter assigned to the game rather than comparing the requirements with whichever name appears first.
- Paste the values beside the official requirements. Keep minimum and recommended columns separate, and include the game edition, platform/store listing, and the date of the requirements page.
Compare the two sides without overpromising
The comparison is a decision aid, not a benchmark. Use the strongest conclusion supported by the evidence and no stronger.

Check every core category. A PC can exceed the CPU requirement but fail the operating-system, VRAM, API, or SSD requirement. Conversely, extra RAM cannot compensate for a graphics card below the stated baseline.

Worked example: Baldur’s Gate 3 on Windows
Larian Studios’ official Baldur’s Gate 3 system-requirements page, accessed October 13, 2026, provides a concrete example of how to lay out the comparison. These values illustrate the method; they are not universal requirements for turn-based RPGs.

Larian states that the minimum specification can run the game on low to medium settings and that the recommended specification can run it on high or ultra settings. Those statements belong to this game’s documentation; they should not be generalized to another RPG whose developer may define its tiers differently.
How to classify a sample PC
Suppose your inventory shows Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel i5-4690, 8 GB RAM, a GTX 970 with 4 GB VRAM, DirectX 11, and at least 150 GB free on an SSD. Those entries match the listed minimum tier. The accurate conclusion is that the computer meets Larian’s published minimum requirements; the page’s low-to-medium qualification applies, while a particular frame rate or resolution is not established.
If the same computer has 16 GB RAM but the GTX 970 remains installed, it still does not meet the recommended GPU tier. Extra memory does not turn that GPU into an RTX 2060 Super or RX 5700 XT. Conversely, a recommended-class GPU paired with only 8 GB RAM remains below the recommended memory tier. Compare each row independently before assigning the overall result.

When the comparison exposes a shortfall
Confirm that the shortfall is real
Recheck the exact model number, not a family name copied from a retailer listing. Verify VRAM in DxDiag, confirm the installation drive is an SSD when required, and make sure the requirements page applies to your edition and current patch era. A laptop’s low-power version of a GPU can have a different capability from a desktop card with a similar label.
Decide whether the uncertainty is acceptable
If the PC is below a core minimum requirement, treat a purchase as a risk rather than as a guaranteed bargain. If it only misses the recommended tier, decide whether lower settings or less consistent performance would be acceptable. The published list does not tell you exactly how a game will behave at your monitor’s resolution, with your drivers, or after future patches.
Upgrade only after identifying the limiting component
Do not buy a generic “gaming upgrade” before you know which row fails. An SSD can address a storage-type requirement, but it cannot solve insufficient VRAM. More RAM cannot satisfy an unsupported operating-system bitness requirement. A desktop upgrade also has to fit the power supply, case, motherboard, cooling, and available slots; those compatibility facts are separate from the game’s requirements.
Built-in Windows tools are sufficient for the core check, so a paid diagnostic product is not necessary to establish the basic comparison. Automated checker sites can be a convenience for a first pass, but use the publisher’s current requirements and your own recorded hardware as the deciding evidence. Their current accuracy and privacy practices are not established here.
Common mistakes that produce false confidence
- Using the “turn-based” label as a performance estimate. Turn order changes game logic, not necessarily the complexity of its graphics engine.
- Checking only the CPU and RAM. GPU model, VRAM, graphics API, operating-system bitness, and SSD requirements can independently determine compatibility.
- Reading minimum as recommended. A machine at the minimum tier is not automatically a high-settings machine.
- Comparing clock speeds across generations. Similar gigahertz numbers do not establish equivalent CPU performance.
- Counting total disk capacity instead of free space on the install drive. The game needs room where it will actually be installed.
- Ignoring multiple GPUs. Comparing against an inactive integrated adapter can understate capability; comparing against an inactive discrete adapter can overstate it.
- Relying on an old requirements screenshot. Confirm the live publisher page, edition, store version, and patch context.
- Assuming DirectX version proves feature support. DxDiag’s API version and the GPU’s feature support are related checks, not interchangeable ones.
A pre-purchase checklist you can reuse
- Open the official requirements page for the exact Windows game and record its access date.
- Copy minimum and recommended values for OS/bitness, CPU, RAM, GPU, VRAM, API, and storage.
- Record your processor, RAM, Windows version and bitness in Settings > System > About.
- Record free space and drive type in Settings > System > Storage.
- Use DxDiag to record DirectX, GPU model, and display-memory details; save the report if needed.
- Identify which GPU the game will use when multiple adapters are installed.
- Mark every row as meeting minimum, meeting recommended, below minimum, or unknown.
- Read the publisher’s notes about what its tiers mean for settings, and do not add a frame-rate promise the page does not make.
- If a core item is below minimum or unknown, resolve that uncertainty before purchasing or accept that compatibility is unverified.
Bottom line
A turn-based RPG will run on your PC only as far as the exact game’s requirements and your measured hardware establish. Check the operating system and bitness, CPU, RAM, GPU and VRAM, graphics API, and free SSD space with Windows Settings and DxDiag; compare minimum and recommended tiers separately; then treat any missing or below-minimum item as uncertainty rather than a guarantee. The official requirements for the particular game—not its genre label or a generic checker—should decide your purchase.
