Brand stability is a useful prompt for evaluating a long-term dependency, but it is not a score or a guarantee. A familiar name or positive reputation cannot establish that a supplier will remain reliable, secure, well-supported, or under the same ownership. Assess those questions with operational evidence instead.
What brand stability can—and cannot—tell you
Brand stability is best treated as a signal to investigate. It can lead you to ask whether an organization appears durable and consistent, but official guidance does not define it as a formal risk measure. Nor does reputation alone prove continuity, sound ownership, secure practices, or durable support.

The useful question is not simply whether a brand seems stable. It is whether you can gather enough evidence about the organization and the dependency to make an informed decision—and whether you have a plan if the relationship is disrupted.

Start with the supplier and the dependency
For technology suppliers, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) frames due diligence as investigating pertinent information about a supplier or product to inform decisions about new acquisitions and existing systems. Its July 2026 guide, SP 1326, focuses on information and communications technology suppliers, while noting that the approach can apply to other supplier types.
#1 Best Overall
NIST identifies five areas to examine. Use them as prompts for evidence, not as a validated brand-stability score:
- Ownership and control: Who owns or controls the supplier, and could that change? For ICT suppliers, NIST specifically includes foreign ownership, control, or influence.
- Provenance: Where does the product or technology come from, and can you establish its origin?
- Resilience: Can the supplier and the product withstand disruption, and what evidence supports that assessment?
- Foundational cyber practices: What basic cybersecurity practices does the supplier use?
- Supply-chain tiers: Which upstream suppliers or components affect delivery, and how much is known about them?
The depth of investigation should reflect how important the dependency is to your operations and what information is available. A critical system warrants more scrutiny than a low-impact service.

Check visibility into technology and its supply chain
A supplier’s assurances are harder to evaluate when you cannot see how acquired technology is developed, integrated, and deployed. NIST’s SP 800-161 Rev. 1 Update 1, published November 1, 2024, connects reduced visibility into those processes with supply-chain risk. It addresses identifying, assessing, and mitigating cybersecurity risks across technology supply chains, including risks affecting security, resilience, reliability, safety, integrity, and quality.
Ask what the supplier can disclose about the product’s origin and development, the way components are integrated, and how changes reach users. For software, NIST’s software supply-chain guidance describes practices such as software bills of materials (SBOMs), enhanced vendor risk assessments, controls for open-source software, and vulnerability management. It presents recommended capabilities at foundational, sustaining, and enhancing levels—not universal legal requirements—so tailor the questions to your organization’s maturity and the dependency’s importance.

Evaluate software maintenance and updates
For software supplied to businesses and other organizations, the UK Software Security Code of Practice is a voluntary reference. It is most relevant to proprietary software in business-to-business relationships. Its principles include understanding software composition, assessing risks from third-party components throughout development and maintenance, and testing software and updates before distribution.
Use those principles to ask how a provider tracks third-party components, addresses vulnerabilities, and tests releases. The code is not a universal obligation; its relevance depends on the software and the relationship.

Plan for a supplier interruption
Dependability includes what happens when normal service is disrupted. ISO/TS 22318:2021 applies business-continuity principles to supplier relationships and aims to protect an organization’s business activities from supply-chain disruption. ISO describes it as generic guidance applicable to organizations and to suppliers of products, services, and resources, both upstream and downstream. ISO’s page says the edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2025 and remains current.

Use continuity planning to identify which activities depend on the supplier, what a disruption would affect, and what response would keep essential work moving. Consider upstream dependencies as well as the direct provider: a supplier may rely on components or services that are not immediately visible to you.

Compare alternatives on the same questions
When choosing between suppliers or deciding whether to retain an existing dependency, use the same evaluation axes for each option. This makes differences easier to see without pretending that brand reputation can be reduced to a single number.
| Evaluation axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Ownership and control | Who owns or controls the supplier? Could a change affect the relationship or the product? |
| Provenance and visibility | Can you understand where the technology comes from and how it is developed, integrated, and deployed? |
| Resilience and continuity | What would happen to your business if the supplier or a critical component became unavailable? What continuity strategy is documented? |
| Security and maintenance | How are third-party components managed? How are software changes and updates tested? |
| Supply-chain depth | How many supplier or component layers affect delivery, and what is known about them? |
| Switching effort | What would replacing the dependency involve: migrating data or processes, retraining users, and verifying the new arrangement? |
The first five axes reflect NIST and ISO guidance. Switching effort is a practical planning question, not a quantified measure established by those sources. Capture evidence and unknowns for each provider, then weigh them against the dependency’s business impact and the effort of changing course.
Use evidence, not reputation, to make the decision
NIST reports that its software supply-chain recommendations drew on federal working groups, public- and private-sector partnerships, and more than 150 position papers submitted ahead of a June 2021 workshop. That figure describes input to the guidance; it is not a supplier-failure rate or evidence that any brand is dependable.
The cited guidance offers ways to investigate suppliers and prepare for disruption, not a universal rating system. No statistic in these sources establishes that brand reputation predicts long-term dependency reliability. Treat a strong reputation as a reason to ask better questions—not as a substitute for evidence about ownership, provenance, resilience, security, maintenance, continuity, and the practical path to switching.
