No single store listing, scan, or Samsung security feature can prove that an app is trustworthy. A safer approach is to install from Google Play or Galaxy Store, question permissions that do not fit the app’s purpose, and keep built-in protections enabled. If an app behaves suspiciously, use Samsung’s diagnostic and removal tools rather than assuming a warning—or the absence of one—settles the question.
Before installing an app: check its source and access requests
Prefer Google Play or Galaxy Store
Samsung recommends downloading apps through Google Play or Galaxy Store. An app offered only as a browser download or APK from an unfamiliar source falls outside that default and carries added risk. Samsung’s guidance warns that installing from other sources is your responsibility; Auto Blocker may block an installation attempt from an unauthorized source.

Ask whether the permissions fit the app
Consider what the app does and whether each requested permission makes sense for that purpose. A permission check is a useful warning signal, not a test that can certify an app as safe. Samsung’s advice is simple: “When in doubt, if an app seems fishy, don’t grant it access.”
Keep software current
Install available software updates and leave Google Play Protect scanning enabled. Neither an app-store listing nor automated scanning guarantees that every harmful app will be identified.

Review or revoke an app’s permissions
On Samsung’s documented U.S. path, open Settings > Apps, select the app, then tap Permissions. Choose a permission under Allowed and select Don’t allow or turn off the displayed switch. Labels and screens vary by device.
Samsung says permissions for apps that have not been used for a while may be reset automatically. The app may ask for access again the next time you open it; review the request rather than granting it automatically.

What Samsung and Google’s built-in protections do
Auto Blocker
Samsung documents the path Settings > Security and privacy > Auto Blocker. Depending on device and software availability, Auto Blocker can block installations from unauthorized sources, certain USB commands, suspected malware images in messaging, and non-official software updates. These controls reduce particular risks; they do not establish that every installed app is safe.
Google Play Protect
Play Protect is a Google feature in the Play Store that scans apps for suspicious behavior. Samsung says it is enabled by default on Galaxy devices and recommends leaving scanning on. A clean scan is not proof that an app is trustworthy.

Maximum restrictions: stronger controls with usability costs
Maximum restrictions is an optional, more restrictive Auto Blocker setting. Samsung documents the following trade-offs:

Choose it only if those limits fit your work, connectivity, and sharing needs. Samsung’s Canada support guidance was updated July 15, 2026; availability and behavior can vary by model, software version, carrier, and region.

Third-party antivirus apps
Samsung’s U.S. malware guidance says antivirus apps are not pre-installed and advises avoiding third-party anti-malware apps. This article does not recommend adding one as a routine substitute for the built-in protections.

Run App safety Diagnostics
- Connect the phone to Wi-Fi and restart it first; Samsung says this helps the diagnostic produce an accurate result.
- Open Settings > Device care > Diagnostics > App safety Diagnostics. Settings names and availability may differ.
- Review any apps identified as risks and uninstall an app if appropriate.
Uninstall an app you do not trust
Samsung’s general removal path is Settings > Apps, select the app, then tap Uninstall. If the menus do not match, search Settings for “App safety Diagnostics,” “Permissions,” or the feature name. Samsung notes that settings and screens can vary by model, software version, carrier, and region.

When a setting or installation is blocked
If Auto Blocker prevents an install, treat the block as a reason to pause and verify the source—not as a prompt to routinely disable protection. Samsung’s installation guidance warns of the risks associated with apps from outside established stores. If a needed setting is missing, search Settings for the feature name; it may not be available on that device or software version.
