You cannot reliably authenticate a leaked game video by appearance alone. Trace it to its earliest source, check for confirmation from the developer or publisher, and compare specific details across the clip and any earlier versions. A video may also be genuine but edited, miscaptioned, captured from an unfinished build, or staged as a cinematic—so assess the particular claim rather than forcing a simple real-or-CGI verdict.
Start with the clip’s source, not its look
Find the earliest version of the video you can locate, then record what its uploader actually claims: which game it shows, when or from what build it was captured, and what the footage is supposed to prove. A repost, confident caption, or resemblance to a game is not authentication.

Look for corroboration from the developer or publisher, or from a credible independent investigator who explains how the clip was traced. Keep separate two different claims: that a leak occurred, and that this specific circulating copy is authentic and unaltered. Confirmation of the first does not automatically establish the second.

Inspect the footage for leads—not proof
Watch the whole clip, then pause on several distinctive moments. Check whether interface elements, characters, locations, lighting, animations, and object interactions remain consistent. If the clip claims to show a particular game or build, compare those particulars with official material or earlier copies of the footage.

- HUD and game assets: A recognizable interface or character can help identify a game, but it can be added to a render or copied from another source.
- Movement and interaction: Look for coherent responses to apparent controls and for objects that keep a consistent shape and position across frames. Camera movement that feels game-like is not decisive; CGI can imitate it.
- Shadows, particles, and animation: Inconsistencies may warrant closer inspection, but a real development build can contain bugs and unfinished effects.
- Image and sound quality: Darkness, low resolution, shakiness, or missing or artificial-feeling sound can occur in footage that is being concealed or misrepresented. None establishes whether a clip is genuine.
Bohemia Interactive’s guidance on Arma 3 footage misrepresented as real-world conflict footage lists cues such as HUD elements, unnatural particle effects, implausible vehicles or uniforms, low resolution, darkness, shakiness, and sound that is missing or feels artificial. Those are leads for investigating that kind of misrepresentation—not a universal CGI-detection test. The reviewed official sources establish no single visual test that reliably distinguishes every authentic game capture from CGI.
Trace earlier versions and compare details
- Save the exact claim and source. Note the uploader, caption, game, claimed date or build, and where you found the clip.
- Follow reposts backward. Compare upload dates and look for the earliest available version. An early upload is useful evidence about provenance, but it does not prove the uploader’s identity or the footage’s authenticity.
- Capture distinctive frames. Choose moments with readable text, unusual objects, recognizable scenery, or other details less likely to appear in unrelated footage.
- Reverse-search those frames and video thumbnails. Compare any matches with care: crops, mirroring, overlays, and color changes can make an earlier appearance harder to find. A failed search does not show that the clip is original.
- Compare versions frame by frame where useful. Check chronology, edits, continuity, and whether recognizable details match. A match can establish that a version appeared earlier; it does not by itself establish who made the clip or what it depicts.
Bellingcat describes tracing earlier sources by searching video thumbnails and screenshots and comparing upload dates. Its examples also show why context matters: a clip can be presented as evidence of something it does not actually show.

Check platform labels and metadata cautiously
On YouTube, expand the description and look for the “How this content was made” section. YouTube says labels may disclose meaningful synthetic or altered content and that certain valid C2PA Content Credentials disclosures can carry forward. A label can inform your assessment, but the absence of a label does not authenticate a video; the platform describes ways a label may appear, not a guarantee that every synthetic clip will be labeled.

Match your conclusion to the evidence
- Confirmed: An official source identifies this clip or its source.
- Likely: Several independent clues support the attribution, but direct confirmation is absent.
- Unverified: The available evidence does not establish where the clip came from.
- Misleading or altered: Evidence contradicts a specific caption, edit, or claimed context. Say exactly what is contradicted; do not call the entire clip fake unless the evidence supports that broader claim.
A publisher-side forensic watermark may help attribute gameplay visuals to a user or build. Irdeto describes its Denuvo service as using invisible, user-unique fingerprints and a detection portal. This is a vendor-described service for publishers, not a public test that viewers can apply to any clip.

Policies differ by publisher. Rockstar’s page, last updated January 10, 2025, says the company will take down footage from leaked pre-release copies of its games, regardless of how the copy was obtained. That is Rockstar’s stated policy, not a rule that applies to every publisher. Before reposting leaked footage, check the relevant publisher’s policy and consider whether sharing it could spread a false claim or violate its terms.
