A surprising kill in Gray Zone Warfare cannot, by itself, tell you whether another player cheated or the encounter was affected by desynchronization. The game has had documented sync and network-performance issues, and MADFINGER has also taken action against cheating and exploits. There is no published player-side test that conclusively identifies the cause of a specific death. Preserve the full encounter and report what the footage shows rather than treating suspicion as proof.
What can—and cannot—distinguish cheating from desync
Start with what you observed, not a verdict about why it happened. A player seeming to know your position, landing an unusually fast shot, or killing you before you can react may be worth reporting, but none is proof on its own. MADFINGER has not published a reliable in-game test, ping cutoff, killcam rule, movement pattern, or number of suspicious incidents that lets players classify a particular encounter.

| What you observe | What it may suggest | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| A player appears stuck, jumps to a different position, or looks different between moments or observers | A synchronization or presentation problem is plausible, especially if the session also has hitches or connection trouble. Historical patch notes document sync defects. | That the opponent was innocent, or that a particular server or network fault caused the incident. |
| Hitching, rubberbanding, or hit-registration trouble recurs during the session | Network or server performance may be affecting the experience; MADFINGER has discussed work to reduce these problems. | That a specific missed or unusual hit was caused by desync. |
| One apparently impossible shot, quick kill, or instance of apparent awareness | The incident may merit preserving and submitting for review. | That cheating is established. |
| A clear recording shows a repeated suspicious pattern | It gives a reviewer more context than a cropped instant. | A guaranteed finding; MADFINGER does not publish its review criteria. |
Why desync is plausible—but not a diagnosis
MADFINGER’s May 22, 2025 Update 0.3 changelog documented several historical synchronization defects: a player could become desynced and stuck after revival; fridge doors could be out of sync between clients; the sit emote could cause visual desync; and some animations or actions did not synchronize correctly to other clients. These entries show that client inconsistencies have occurred in the game, not that those particular issues remain active or explain a later PvP encounter. Read the Update 0.3 changelog.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →In March 2026 development notes, the MADFINGER Games Team said: “Server performance is in its best state since 0.1, and further improvements should bring even fewer hitches, better hit registration, and less rubberbanding.” This is the studio’s description of its progress, not an independently measured benchmark or a diagnostic threshold for players. Its March notes also listed reduced hitching during shooting and fixes involving directional audio, squad VOIP, and a warning for losing connection to the VOIP server. VOIP trouble alone does not establish combat desync. See the Spearhead development notes and the Spearhead changelog.

What MADFINGER has disclosed about cheating
MADFINGER says it integrated Denuvo code obfuscation to make tampering with Gray Zone Warfare more difficult. The studio explicitly said this did not add a new kernel-level anti-cheat measure, and that details of specific anti-cheat measures remain confidential. In March 2026, it said Update 0.4 would improve wallhack detection and banning, but withheld the specifics. Those are descriptions of the developer’s security work, not procedures players can use to diagnose an opponent. Read MADFINGER’s anti-cheat statement.
On September 18, 2026, MADFINGER reported that a specific Update 0.4 item-duplication exploit—possible under particular circumstances around helicopter deaths—had been addressed in a subsequent hotfix. The studio said its investigation identified close to 40 accounts that deliberately abused that exploit, with temporary suspensions and account wipes to follow. That count concerns this one exploit; it is not an estimate of the total number of cheaters or cheating prevalence in the game. Read the security report.

How to report a suspected cheater
- Save the whole encounter. Keep the original recording, including the lead-up, position changes, shots, death, and any visible hitching or connection symptoms. MADFINGER does not specify a required clip length or file format, so do not treat this practical advice as an official submission specification.
- Write down what happened. Include the approximate time, game mode and server region if known, what appeared on screen, and whether similar behavior happened again. Separate what the clip shows from your interpretation of it.
- Use MADFINGER’s official suspected-cheater reporting route. Its anti-cheat statement instructs players: “Be sure to include conclusive video evidence with your report.”
- Let the review determine the finding. Avoid presenting a player’s guilt as certain based only on a surprising kill. The studio keeps its detailed detection methods and case-review criteria private.
Check the version before calling a bug current
The sync defects above are historical examples, not a current bug list. On October 1, 2026, MADFINGER announced that Update 0.5: Rogue Ops was scheduled for October 22, 2026. For encounters after that date, consult newer patch notes and security updates before attributing a particular behavior to a known defect. See the Update 0.5 announcement.
