Space weather can disrupt satellite-navigation signals, but a GPS glitch by itself cannot tell you why it happened. Solar and geomagnetic activity can disturb the ionosphere, changing how signals travel from satellites to a receiver. To judge whether that is a plausible explanation, record when and where the problem occurred, check for ordinary local or device causes, and compare the event with NOAA’s geomagnetic conditions. A storm that overlaps the glitch is evidence to consider—not proof that it caused your particular navigation problem.
What space weather can do to GPS signals
GPS satellites transmit radio signals that travel through the ionosphere, a region of Earth’s upper atmosphere. Solar and geomagnetic activity can change that region. The resulting effects may delay or bend signals, diffract them, or cause rapid fluctuations in their received amplitude and phase, a phenomenon called scintillation. Depending on conditions and the receiver, navigation accuracy or availability may degrade; severe disruption can affect reception.

These effects are not unique to GPS. GPS is one of several global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), and ionospheric conditions can matter to satellite-navigation signals generally. But a user-facing symptom—such as a drifting dot, a wrong turn, or a lost position—does not identify which part of the system failed. A map can be wrong while the receiver is positioning correctly, and local obstructions can interfere with reception even on a quiet space-weather day.

The distinction matters because “navigation is wrong” can describe several different failures. The receiver may be calculating an unstable position; the app may be using incorrect map or routing data; or the device may show a plausible position while the user interprets the display as a signal problem. Space weather is most relevant to the satellite signals’ path through the ionosphere. It does not, by itself, explain every error on a screen that uses location information.

First identify what actually failed
Before checking alerts, separate a position problem from a map or routing problem. A receiver-position problem means the device’s calculated location is missing, unstable, drifting, or jumping. A map problem can instead show an incorrect road, address, place label, route, or pin while the device’s position remains stable. GPS.gov notes that mapping software can mislead users even when GPS hardware is working.
Write down the time and location, how long the issue lasted, what the screen showed, and whether the device kept satellite lock if it exposes that information. Note whether the error happened while stationary or moving, and whether it affected one app, one device, or several receivers nearby. This record helps distinguish an isolated app or map issue from a broader reception problem and gives you a specific time window to compare with NOAA information.
If you can, describe the behavior rather than labeling it. “The position marker moved several blocks while the phone was stationary” is more useful than “GPS failed.” “The marker stayed on the road, but the app displayed a wrong street name” points toward a different kind of problem. Also note whether the issue stopped on its own, whether it returned, and whether you changed location or device settings before it cleared.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Position jumps or drifts: focus on reception, obstruction, reflections, interference, receiver behavior, and possible signal conditions.
- Position looks stable but the road, destination, or route is wrong: check the map or routing data and report the error to the mapping provider.
- Only one app or device is affected: treat a device-, app-, or receiver-specific issue as a possibility; the symptom alone does not establish a space-weather cause.
Rule out the common causes near you
GPS.gov’s guidance is direct: “Many things can degrade GPS positioning accuracy.” Buildings, bridges, trees, indoor or underground use, and reflecting surfaces can block or distort the signals reaching a receiver. Reflected signals may arrive by a longer path than a direct signal, contributing to a position error. A location-specific glitch can happen during a geomagnetic storm by coincidence, so note the surroundings as well as the time.
- Compare in a more open location. If practical, move to an area with a clearer view of the sky and observe whether the position becomes steadier. This is a useful comparison, not a definitive test: changing locations also changes the local obstructions and reflections.
- Check whether the issue follows the place or the device. See whether the same device works elsewhere, or whether another receiver has a similar problem in the same area. Record what you observe rather than assuming a shared symptom has a shared cause.
- Separate the map display from the position. If the position marker is stable but a road, address, or route is inaccurate, contact the mapping provider about the data. A satellite-navigation operator cannot correct a map database error.
- Consider receiver and service conditions. Receiver design and satellite geometry can affect performance. A fault limited to one receiver is not, by itself, evidence of a space-weather event.
GPS.gov gives 4.9 m (16 ft.) as typical accuracy for GPS-enabled smartphones under open sky. That is a typical figure, not a guarantee for every handset or location; the same guidance says accuracy worsens near buildings, bridges, and trees. A phone showing a larger error is not enough on its own to identify the cause.
Use the open-sky comparison as a way to gather clues, not as a pass-or-fail test. If a position improves after moving away from a building or tree, that makes the surroundings relevant, but it does not prove that every error was caused by blockage. If the position remains poor, that still does not prove a space-weather cause: receiver behavior, interference, geometry, or other conditions remain possible. The practical value is in comparing like with like and keeping track of what changed.

Check whether geomagnetic conditions overlap the event
After recording the time and location, consult NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) geomagnetic scales, alerts, and products for the relevant period. The SWPC product catalog lists geomagnetic forecasts and planetary K-index products. Check the time covered by a product rather than relying only on the conditions displayed at the moment you look: a current reading may not describe an earlier navigation problem.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteNOAA’s scale describes possible impacts broadly, not the diagnosis of a particular phone, car, receiver, or map error. Its stated navigation impacts include:
| NOAA geomagnetic level | Navigation impact described by NOAA | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| G3 (Strong), Kp=7 | Intermittent satellite-navigation problems may occur. | A contemporaneous G3 condition makes a space-weather contribution plausible, but it does not establish the cause of one user’s problem. |
| G4 (Severe), Kp=8, including 9− | Satellite navigation may be degraded for hours. | This is a general potential impact across systems, not a threshold that proves a consumer receiver was affected. |
Use the storm scale as context alongside the observed symptom and location. A useful case for further investigation has several compatible clues: a relevant geomagnetic event during the failure, a signal or positioning symptom rather than just incorrect map data, a location and timing consistent with the event, and corroboration from other receivers or technical measurements. Even this combination supports a reasoned assessment; it does not let a broad public alert identify the cause of one device’s error with certainty.
When comparing timing, keep the interval as precise as your notes allow. If you only know that a problem happened “sometime yesterday,” the comparison is less informative than a start and end time. Look at NOAA products that cover the event window, not just a later status page. NOAA’s scales help describe the broad level and possible impacts; they are not a consumer-device diagnostic tool and do not assign a cause to an individual error.
Geography is also part of the comparison. Your location helps establish where the receiver was when the symptom occurred, while the NOAA information provides broad space-weather context. Neither piece, alone or together, turns an ordinary phone reading into a specialist measurement. Treat an overlap as a reason to keep investigating, not a verdict.

GPS.gov reports a U.S. government commitment of a daily global average user range error of no more than 2.0 m (6.6 ft.) with 95% probability. That is a signal-in-space measure across healthy satellites, not a promise that every phone or vehicle will calculate a position within that distance. The receiver, local surroundings, satellite geometry, and mapping software all affect what the user sees. Comparing a device’s displayed position directly with that commitment would therefore confuse different measures.

Receiver design also matters. GPS.gov notes that dual-frequency receivers can improve high-end positioning accuracy, but that fact does not make buying one a way to diagnose an existing glitch. A technical scintillation monitor is a different category again: it uses a dedicated GNSS receiver capable of the necessary high-rate sampling, which ESA describes as less widely available than ordinary consumer receivers.
The two accuracy figures answer different questions. GPS.gov’s 4.9 m (16 ft.) figure is a typical open-sky smartphone accuracy description; the 2.0 m (6.6 ft.) commitment concerns daily global average user range error for the signal in space, with 95% probability. Neither is a guarantee for a specific phone in a specific place. A mismatch between a device’s displayed point and a road or address can also involve map data rather than the position calculation.
Consider radio interference without assuming intent
Radio interference can also affect GPS reception. GPS.gov’s Spectrum & Interference Issues guidance discusses interference sources, including nearby-band radio emissions and intentional or unintentional jamming. Signal loss or several receivers having trouble in the same area may justify considering interference, but symptoms alone do not show that jamming occurred or establish who or what caused it.

For U.S. civilian users who suspect radio interference, GPS.gov directs them to report it to the Coast Guard Navigation Center and/or the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Keep the report factual: include where and when the problem occurred, how long it lasted, what equipment or systems were affected, and what you observed. Do not present an unverified cause as a confirmed finding.
A shared problem can be a useful clue, but it is not a complete diagnosis. Several receivers failing in one place may be consistent with a local signal issue, yet the common symptom alone cannot distinguish radio interference from other causes. Likewise, one receiver losing position does not rule out every broader condition. Describe what multiple devices did, rather than assigning intent or a source without evidence.
Use specialist ionospheric measurements only when they fit the problem
Scintillation is a technical description of rapid changes in the amplitude and phase of received signals. The European Space Agency (ESA) describes the S4 index for amplitude fluctuations and sigma-phi for phase fluctuations. These indices are used in specialist monitoring, not normally displayed as diagnostic readings on a consumer navigation screen.

ESA describes dedicated, high-rate GNSS receivers for this kind of monitoring. If you do not have access to the appropriate receiver or specialist data, a normal phone display cannot tell you whether scintillation occurred. ESA’s Space Weather service pages have noted that services are under review or construction; confirm that a particular product or map is currently available before relying on it.
This is why a consumer troubleshooting check should stop short of claiming that a particular fluctuation was scintillation. A drifting point or lost lock is not an S4 or sigma-phi measurement. Those indices characterize amplitude and phase changes using monitoring data; a standard navigation display generally reports the outcome of its position calculation, not the underlying ionospheric signal behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare the likely explanations
| Possible explanation | Clues to check | What the clues cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Space weather affecting the ionosphere | Geomagnetic activity at the relevant time; a compatible positioning or signal disruption; corroboration from other receivers or technical evidence of ionospheric disturbance. | A NOAA alert or storm alone cannot prove the cause of an individual receiver’s problem. |
| Local blockage or multipath | The problem occurs near buildings, bridges, trees, indoors, underground, or reflective surfaces; the result changes in a more open location. | A location-related problem can occur at the same time as a storm without being caused by it. |
| Radio interference or jamming | Suspected interference, signal loss, or similar trouble affecting multiple nearby receivers. | Symptoms do not establish intentional jamming or identify a source. |
| Receiver or satellite/service conditions | The issue appears limited to one receiver, or receiver design and satellite geometry may be relevant. | Signal-in-space performance is not the same as the position accuracy of a particular device. |
| Map or routing data | The position appears stable, but a road, address, place label, pin, or route is incorrect. | A map-data error is not evidence of a satellite-signal fault; the mapping provider is the appropriate contact. |
Consider the explanations together rather than treating the table as a set of definitive tests. For example, a wrong road label with a steady position marker points to a different next step than a lost satellite lock. An open-sky improvement gives a local-environment clue, while a contemporaneous NOAA alert gives broad space-weather context. Neither clue substitutes for identifying what the device actually displayed.
Choose the next step based on what you found
- Positioning trouble plus overlapping geomagnetic activity: keep the time, place, duration, and receiver observations together with the NOAA conditions. Describe space weather as a plausible factor, not a confirmed cause.
- Trouble that changes with surroundings: record the nearby obstructions or reflections and compare performance in a clearer-sky location when practical.
- A stable position with incorrect map information: send the correction to the mapping provider.
- Suspected radio interference in the United States: follow GPS.gov’s reporting direction to the Coast Guard Navigation Center and/or FCC, describing observations rather than asserting an unverified cause.
- A need to confirm scintillation: look for appropriate technical measurements from specialist monitoring systems; consumer navigation screens generally do not provide S4 or sigma-phi readings.
For a useful record, capture the date and approximate time, location, duration, whether the receiver position drifted or disappeared, whether the map itself looked wrong, and whether another device showed a similar symptom. Note the surroundings and any open-sky comparison. This gives you a clearer account to share with a mapping provider or, in the United States, with the relevant interference-reporting channel if interference is suspected.
Sources and geographic scope
NOAA SWPC’s scales and products describe broad space-weather conditions and possible effects; they are not case-specific diagnoses. GPS.gov’s accuracy information and interference reporting guidance are U.S. government guidance. ESA’s material explains ionospheric effects and specialist monitoring, and its service pages indicate that some services may be under review or construction. Check current availability before relying on a specific ESA product.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a GPS glitch prove that a solar or geomagnetic storm caused it?
No. A storm or NOAA alert that overlaps the problem makes space weather plausible, but a single symptom cannot establish the cause. Check what failed, where and when it happened, local obstructions, the device and map behavior, and whether other receivers or specialist measurements corroborate it.
Best Value
What NOAA geomagnetic level is associated with possible navigation problems?
NOAA’s scales say intermittent satellite-navigation problems may occur at G3 (Strong, Kp=7). At G4 (Severe, Kp=8 including 9−), satellite navigation may be degraded for hours. These are broad possible impacts, not thresholds that diagnose an individual phone or vehicle.
Why does GPS sometimes show me in the wrong place?
Possible explanations include buildings, bridges, trees, indoor or underground use, reflections, receiver behavior, interference, and map or routing data. If the position marker is stable but the road, address, or route is wrong, contact the mapping provider rather than treating it as proof of a satellite-signal problem.
How accurate should GPS be on a smartphone?
GPS.gov describes 4.9 m (16 ft.) as typical accuracy for GPS-enabled smartphones under open sky. It is not a guarantee for every phone or location; accuracy can worsen near buildings, bridges, and trees. The separate U.S. signal-in-space commitment of no more than 2.0 m (6.6 ft.) daily global average user range error with 95% probability is not a promise about an individual device’s displayed position.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How can I tell whether GPS interference is happening?
A signal loss or similar trouble on several nearby receivers may be a reason to consider interference, but symptoms do not establish a source or prove intentional jamming. U.S. civilian users who suspect radio interference can report observations to the Coast Guard Navigation Center and/or FCC. Include the time, place, duration, equipment, and behavior observed.
Can my phone show whether ionospheric scintillation occurred?
Usually not. ESA describes S4 and sigma-phi indices for specialist monitoring of signal-amplitude and phase fluctuations using dedicated, high-rate GNSS receivers. A normal consumer navigation screen does not generally provide those readings.
The Bottom Line
A GPS problem that overlaps a geomagnetic storm may have a space-weather component, but timing alone cannot prove it. First determine whether the position itself failed or the map data was wrong, check local obstructions and receiver-specific behavior, then compare the event window with NOAA’s broad geomagnetic information. Treat the result as evidence to weigh—not a definitive diagnosis.
