How to Compare Android Phone Performance Beyond AnTuTu Scores

AnTuTu is only one data point. Learn how to compare Android phones with matched CPU, GPU, real-task, sustained-performance, storage and battery tests.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare phones by the work you actually do, not by one AnTuTu number. Use the same benchmark versions and settings, isolate CPU, GPU, storage and task performance, repeat demanding runs to expose throttling, and record each phone’s hardware, software and thermal state. The fastest phone in a short benchmark may not be the fastest after 20 minutes of gaming, a long video export or heavy multitasking.

A defensible comparison therefore reports a set of matched measurements: short-burst responsiveness, parallel CPU work, graphics frame rates, sustained performance, storage or productivity tasks, and battery drain under a stated protocol. AnTuTu can be one data point, but it cannot answer all of those questions.

What a performance comparison should measure

Phone performance is a collection of behaviors rather than a single attribute. A high total score can hide a weak result in the workload that matters to you, while two phones with similar totals can feel very different in daily use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Short CPU response: single-core results and a repeatable app or task timing indicate how quickly brief interactions may complete.
  • Parallel CPU work: multi-core results and a multithreaded task are more relevant to compression, batch processing and heavy multitasking.
  • GPU performance: graphics tests and frame-rate measurements show how a phone handles games and other parallel visual workloads.
  • Sustained output: repeated runs reveal whether heat and power limits reduce performance after the initial burst.
  • Storage and work: file operations, app tasks and productivity suites test behavior that a graphics score does not represent.
  • Efficiency: battery drain during a defined workload shows the cost of producing that performance.

These dimensions are complementary. A score from one category should not be presented as a universal ranking of the handset.

Make the test fair before comparing scores

Use identical software and settings

Install the same benchmark build on every phone and verify the test mode, resolution and quality settings. Record the app version, Android version and date. A result from one release is not automatically comparable with a result from another release, because workloads and drivers can change.

UL Benchmarks advises: “In general, you should benchmark every device you test under the same conditions.” Apply that rule to power state, network state, display settings and thermal preparation as well as to the app itself.

Control the device state

Before each run, use the same starting conditions:

  • Choose either plugged-in or unplugged testing and use that choice for all phones.
  • Select the same performance, balanced or gaming mode. If a mode is unavailable, document that difference instead of hiding it.
  • Start at a similar battery level and allow each phone to cool to a comparable idle temperature.
  • Keep background downloads, synchronisation and notifications to a minimum. Do not compare a clean lab run with a phone that is installing updates.
  • Use the same display resolution and refresh-rate settings where the software permits them.
  • Keep network conditions consistent for tasks that require connectivity; otherwise use the same offline files.

Do not use a clip-on cooler or fan for only one handset. Cooling changes the thermal conditions and can make the comparison answer a different question. If you test with additional cooling, use it on every phone and label the results as cooled testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeat and report variation

Run short benchmarks at least several times after a warm-up run. Report the average and the individual range, or show every pass when the sample is small. A single unusually high or low result is not a reliable verdict.

UL states that the precision of its benchmark scores is usually better than 3%. That figure describes UL’s own benchmarks, not every Android test or every uncontrolled handset. Android is a multitasking operating system, so background activity, firmware and temperature can still move an individual result. Treat a difference smaller than the observed run-to-run variation cautiously.

Separate CPU, GPU and real-task performance

CPU: single-core and multi-core are different questions

A CPU-focused test should report single-core and multi-core results separately. Single-core behavior is useful for short, serial operations such as launching an app or completing one stage of a workflow. Multi-core behavior matters when several threads can run at once, such as batch photo processing, compiling or transcoding.

Do not translate a higher CPU score directly into “faster in every app.” Apps vary in how many threads they use, whether they wait on storage or the network, and whether the operating system schedules them efficiently. Pair the score with at least one timed task that has a visible completion point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GPU: frame rate and consistency matter more than a total

Use a graphics test for graphics-heavy questions. 3DMark’s Android workloads measure CPU and GPU performance with Vulkan and OpenGL ES benchmarks. Capture the reported frame rate, graphics preset and resolution, not just the overall score.

For gaming, record the game’s actual settings and frame-rate behavior where possible. A phone that produces a high peak but frequently drops frames can feel worse than a slower phone with steadier delivery. Keep resolution, quality, frame-rate cap and render scale identical when the game allows it.

Task timing connects numbers to use

Choose a repeatable task with a clear start and finish: exporting the same video project, converting the same file, resizing a fixed image batch or completing a scripted app workflow. Use the same source files and settings on both phones. Time several passes, discard only a predeclared warm-up pass, and report the method.

Question Useful measurement What to record Why it cannot stand alone
How fast is a brief CPU task? Single-core benchmark and short app/task timing Score, elapsed time, app version, Android version Many apps are limited by storage, network or one particular API.
How well does it handle parallel work? Multi-core benchmark and multithreaded task Score, completion time, thread or workload description Some everyday apps use few threads.
How good is it for games? 3DMark or in-game frame-rate test API, resolution, quality preset, average and low frame rate A short run can show peak rather than sustained output.
How quickly does it process files? Timed export, conversion or copy workflow Input file, output settings, storage location, elapsed time Results depend on codecs, storage and app implementation.

Test sustained performance instead of only the first run

Why peak results fade

Short benchmarks emphasize what a phone can deliver before heat accumulates. As temperature rises, the system may reduce clock speeds or otherwise limit power. The effect can be small in a quick interaction and substantial in a long game, export or stress test.

Run repeated passes or a stress test

  1. Begin with a cool, documented device state and run one warm-up pass.
  2. Repeat the same CPU or GPU workload for enough passes to reveal a trend. Keep the interval between passes consistent.
  3. Record every score, frame rate, completion time and any error, crash or forced stop.
  4. Measure the change from the first valid pass to the last, and note the lowest sustained result.
  5. Watch for surface heat, warnings, sudden frame-rate drops and applications being closed by the system.

UL’s 3DMark performance-range chart is designed to show whether a device can approach its top result but maintain it consistently. Its Wild Life material describes a demanding, game-like real-time graphics workload and a stress-test curve that can fall from peak toward sustained performance. Use the curve or per-pass data rather than quoting only the first score.

Understand Android’s role in thermal behavior

Android platform documentation describes sustained-performance hints and device-specific power-management behavior intended to help prevent thermal throttling. The documentation discusses checking CPU- and GPU-intensive workloads over 30 minutes. That means sustained behavior depends on the phone’s thermal design, firmware and power policy as well as its system-on-chip. A different result does not automatically prove that one chip is intrinsically faster.

Include work, storage and battery when they affect the decision

Productivity and storage tests

For office work, file handling and storage, choose a test aimed at those activities. UL describes PCMark for Android as providing a Work performance score, a dedicated storage test, battery-life results, per-pass scores and hardware monitoring. The surfaced listing identifies version 3.1.4113 dated June 15, 2026; app availability and the exact current version can change, so verify them before running a comparison.

Record whether files are on internal storage, a removable card or cloud storage. A copy test that crosses storage types measures a different path from an in-place file operation. Report the file sizes and number of files because tiny files and one large file stress storage differently.

Battery testing needs a protocol

Battery life is not a fixed property independent of workload. State the brightness, refresh rate, network connection, application or web pages, audio settings and stopping condition. A surfaced Tom’s Guide methodology, for example, uses web browsing over cellular at a fixed brightness until depletion. That result is meaningful only under that protocol; it is not a promise of the same runtime for every reader.

Battery-test field Example to report
Connection Wi-Fi, cellular or airplane mode; identify the network if relevant
Display Brightness method, resolution and refresh rate
Workload Web pages, video loop, game, benchmark or scripted mix
Starting state Battery percentage, temperature and background-app policy
Stop condition Automatic shutdown, a stated percentage or a fixed elapsed time

Do not infer battery efficiency from a graphics score alone. Two phones can deliver similar frame rates while using different amounts of power, and a larger battery can provide longer runtime without being more efficient.

Record the phone, not just the benchmark result

For every handset, make a test sheet containing:

  • Exact model name, storage tier and regional variant, if known.
  • System-on-chip and modem variant when it differs by region.
  • RAM capacity and storage capacity and type.
  • Display resolution, refresh rate and active display mode.
  • Android version, security-update level and firmware build.
  • Benchmark or app name, version, workload, API and graphics settings.
  • Performance, battery-saver or gaming mode.
  • Plugged-in status, battery percentage and approximate starting temperature.
  • Run number, score or elapsed time, and any anomaly.

UL’s device information screens expose hardware and display specifications and allow scores to be viewed by operating-system version. Its documentation also notes that driver and operating-system updates can change performance, stability and battery life. If one phone receives an update between test sessions, rerun the affected tests or clearly separate the software versions.

Choose the measurements that match your use

For gaming

  • Prioritize GPU frame rate at the settings you intend to use.
  • Run a sustained test or a long session and report frame-rate decline.
  • Record resolution, quality preset, frame-rate cap, temperature and battery drain.
  • Check for overheating, forced exits or severe brightness reduction.

For multitasking and creation

  • Use multi-core CPU results plus a real export, compile or conversion task.
  • Check memory capacity and whether background apps reload after switching.
  • Include storage timing when reading or writing large projects.
  • Repeat the workflow after the phone warms up.

For general everyday use

  • Use single-core results as context, not as a complete ranking.
  • Time app launches, a representative edit or a fixed file operation.
  • Look at sustained behavior only if your use includes long games, navigation or camera recording.
  • Include battery impact and display settings because they shape perceived responsiveness.

For video and photography workflows

  • Transcode or export the same clip with identical codec, resolution and quality settings.
  • Process the same photo batch and record completion time and energy use if possible.
  • Note whether hardware acceleration is enabled and whether the app version is identical.

A complete comparison procedure

  1. Define the decision. Write down whether the reader cares most about gaming, multitasking, editing, storage, battery life or balanced use.
  2. Prepare both phones. Update them to the chosen firmware level, charge them to the same range, remove unnecessary background activity and select matching display and performance settings.
  3. Document configuration. Photograph or transcribe model, SoC, RAM, storage, display, Android build and benchmark versions.
  4. Validate the apps. Confirm that the same benchmark workloads and APIs are available on both devices. Note any unavailable mode instead of substituting silently.
  5. Warm up consistently. Perform the same preliminary activity, then allow both phones to reach comparable idle conditions.
  6. Run short CPU tests. Complete repeated single-core and multi-core runs, saving every result.
  7. Run graphics tests. Use identical API, resolution and quality settings; capture frame-rate and score data.
  8. Run a real task. Time an identical export, conversion, file operation or scripted workflow with the same source data.
  9. Run sustained tests. Repeat the demanding workload or use a stress test, recording each pass, temperature warning and interruption.
  10. Test battery separately. Apply one written protocol and stop at the same condition for each phone.
  11. Analyze by workload. Compare averages, ranges, last-pass performance and task times rather than adding incompatible scores into a new total.
  12. Publish the conditions. Put the test date, software builds, settings and anomalies beside the results so another reader can understand the limits.

How to interpret conflicting results

One phone wins CPU while another wins GPU

This is a normal outcome. CPU architecture, core configuration and scheduler behavior can favor one class of work, while GPU design, drivers and thermal limits favor another. Report separate winners and identify which result matters to the reader.

Scores are close but task times differ

The task may be limited by storage, codec support, memory pressure, app optimization or a single library. Check that the same app build and acceleration path were used. A visible task completion time is often more useful for that workflow than a synthetic score.

The first pass is high and later passes collapse

Describe the phone as having strong peak but weaker sustained performance, then show the pass-by-pass decline. Check temperature, case use, ambient conditions and performance mode before attributing the change solely to the SoC.

A stress test stops early

Record the elapsed time and reason. A 2026 Android Central comparison of two Motorola flagships reported different CPU and GPU rankings and noted that one phone’s 20-minute stress test stopped after overheating. That is a device-specific hands-on observation, not a general conclusion about the brand or every model. Treat an early stop as an important reliability result rather than deleting the run.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Mistake Why it misleads Correction
Comparing different benchmark versions The workload or scoring scale may have changed. Use the same version or label the results as non-comparable.
Mixing performance modes Power limits and scheduling can change substantially. Match the mode, or publish separate mode-specific results.
Using one run Background activity and temperature can distort it. Warm up, repeat and report the range.
Quoting only a total score CPU, GPU, memory and storage strengths disappear inside one number. Show component scores and a real task.
Ignoring resolution and refresh rate Rendering more pixels or driving a faster panel changes load and power. Lock and record display settings.
Testing one phone with extra cooling The thermal conditions are no longer equivalent. Use identical cooling or test without accessories.
Treating a battery result as universal Network, brightness and workload dominate runtime. Publish the complete battery protocol.
Updating only one handset Drivers and operating-system changes can alter results. Align software versions or rerun both phones.

What you need, and what you do not

You need the two phones, identical test applications, a way to time tasks, the same source files and a written test sheet. A thermometer or device-monitoring view can help explain thermal changes, but it is not a substitute for reporting the workload and conditions.

No physical product is required to make a useful comparison. A fan or cooler can be part of a deliberately controlled experiment, but it is not a neutral prerequisite and should never be used on only one phone. Likewise, a cleaner or optimizer should not be introduced unless you can show that it is safe, identical on both devices and relevant to the measured workload.

How to present the final results

Lead with the workload-specific finding instead of declaring one universal champion. A clear results table can use this structure:

Category Phone A Phone B Interpretation
CPU single-core Score and run range Score and run range Short, mostly serial work
CPU multi-core Score and task time Score and task time Parallel workloads
GPU peak Frame rate and settings Frame rate and settings Initial graphics capability
GPU sustained First-to-last change First-to-last change Thermal consistency
Real task Elapsed time Elapsed time Reader-visible outcome
Battery protocol Runtime or drain Runtime or drain Only comparable under the stated protocol

Include the raw runs or a range wherever possible. Explain a tie when the difference is smaller than the observed variation, and identify any test that ended early or used a different setting. This lets readers choose the phone that fits their workload instead of mistaking a synthetic total for a universal answer.
