You usually can’t tell reliably from a voice line alone. To find out whether a particular game records NPC dialogue with actors, generates speech with AI, or uses both, check that game’s official credits and disclosures, then look for documentation of its dialogue system. Treat unusual pacing, repetition, or emotion as a reason to investigate—not proof.
What “AI dialogue” can mean
The phrase can describe different steps in making a line. A game may use one approach for the words and another for the voice, so ask three separate questions: who wrote the dialogue, who performed or licensed the voice, and whether the specific line was recorded or generated.

- Actor-recorded dialogue: An actor performs scripted lines, which are recorded and used in the game.
- Synthesized speech: A system turns written dialogue into audio. The text might be scripted in advance or generated during play.
- Generated dialogue: A system creates a response to the player, potentially in real time. That response may then be voiced using speech synthesis.
- Digital replica: A voice model produces additional speech based on an actor’s voice. This is distinct from the actor recording each line, even if the result sounds like that performer.
These methods can coexist in one game. A title might use actors for its main story, synthesized speech for some incidental characters, or generated responses in a particular feature.
How to check a specific game
- Search the game’s official credits. Check the end credits and official credits pages for voice actors and recording roles. A credit shows that a performer was credited; by itself, it does not prove that the performer recorded every line or that no digitally replicated voice was used for additional dialogue.
- Look for a direct disclosure. Check the developer’s or publisher’s FAQ, AI or accessibility disclosure, patch notes, and official statements. Note the exact wording and date, and whether it applies to the game, a particular character, or a specific feature.
- Find documentation for the dialogue system. A developer may explain whether a character’s responses are prewritten or generated during play, and whether the voice is recorded or synthesized. For example, Epic described its UEFN Conversations feature as generating text responses from player audio and then converting those responses to voice output. Epic called the feature experimental in its announcement; that announcement alone does not establish its current availability. Read Epic’s UEFN announcement.
- Match the evidence to the version you played. A prototype, mod, platform feature, or announcement about another project does not establish how a retail game handles dialogue. Record the relevant platform, region, update, and game version when those details are available.
- Separate documented facts from allegations. Attribute claims to the organization or outlet reporting them, and distinguish a reported allegation from a confirmed finding.
What listening can—and cannot—tell you
Repeated phrases, unusual timing, pronunciation, or emotion that does not fit the scene can be clues to investigate. None establishes on its own that dialogue text or audio was AI-generated. Human performances and editing can sound unusual; AI-generated voices can also be tuned to sound polished. Avoid labeling a line “AI” just because it sounds flat, uncanny, or synthetic.

What official statements and credits establish
Credits show credited work, not necessarily every line’s production method
Actor credits are useful evidence that performers were involved, but they do not answer every production question. They may not specify whether all dialogue was recorded by those actors, whether a voice was digitally replicated for extra lines, or whether some responses are generated at runtime. Look for a title-specific explanation of those details before drawing a conclusion.
Contract disclosures are not public labels for every game
SAG-AFTRA’s page for its ratified 2025 Interactive Media Agreement describes consent and disclosure requirements for AI digital-replica use. Its FAQ says an employer’s description of intended use may need to identify details such as the character, context, dialogue, or gameplay, and that required project information includes whether a character will be used to create real-time generated dialogue. These are performer-facing contract terms for covered performers and employers—not proof that every game must display a public AI label in its credits, or evidence about how a particular line was made. A reported dispute is not a general rule
In May 2025, the Associated Press reported that SAG-AFTRA filed an unfair labor practice charge alleging that AI-generated Darth Vader voice use in Fortnite replaced bargaining-unit work without notice. The AP said Epic did not immediately respond to a request for comment. This was a reported union allegation and dispute, not a court finding and not proof that other games use the same production method. Read the Associated Press report.

How to describe what you find
When the evidence is incomplete, state exactly what it supports rather than choosing a binary verdict. For example: “The credits list voice actors, but I couldn’t find a developer statement explaining whether every NPC line was recorded or whether any responses are generated.” If a developer documents a generated feature, identify the feature and the game version or platform it applies to; don’t generalize it to unrelated characters or releases.
